Clear-cell renal cell carcinoma single thyroid metastasis: A single-center retrospective analysis and review of the literature.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is known to cause metastasis to unusual sites, which can be both synchronous or metachronous. Thyroid gland is a rare site for metastasis. However, RCC is the most common primary neoplasm to metastasize to the Thyroid gland. Report of three cases and review of the literature.

Diffuse Goiter and Severe Hypothyroidism due to Metastasis to the Thyroid.

Despite the fact that the thyroid is a highly vascularized organ, clinically significant metastatic spread to the thyroid is considered uncommon. Hypothyroidism due to these metastases seldom occurs. A 68-year-old female patient came to our department because of rapid enlargement of the lower anterior part of the neck, which developed within 2 months. She had a history of poorly differentiated esophageal adenocarcinoma diagnosed 4 years ago, for which she underwent surgical removal of the neoplasm and received three cycles of chemotherapy. On physical examination, the clinical diagnosis was hy

Silent Thyroiditis Associated with Ropeginterferon α-2b in a Patient with Polycythemia Vera.

Interferon is an emerging treatment option for myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), especially for polycythemia vera (PV). Previous studies of interferon used therapeutically for hepatitis C have demonstrated that one of the most important adverse events associated with interferon treatment is thyroid dysfunction, and a management strategy for thyroid dysfunction has been established. However, whether or not the recommendation is also suitable for MPN settings is unclear. In this study, one PV patient developed silent thyroiditis during a phase 2 study of ropeginterferon α-2b. This case sugges

Radioiodine Uptake in Incidentally Detected Neuroendocrine Tumor: Correlative Imaging With FDG PET/CT and 68 Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT.

Radioiodine whole-body scintigraphy has long been used for detection of differentiated thyroid carcinoma with high avidity in functioning thyroid tissues. However, uptake is not completely specific, and "false-positive" uptake in nonthyroidal tumors have rarely been reported. Herein, we present a case of incidentally detected neuroendocrine tumor showing high radioiodine uptake initially suspected to be thyroid metastasis. Correlative imaging with FDG PET/CT and 68 Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT is presented, and literature survey is discussed. We conclude that neuroendocrine tumor should be added to the

Thyroid paraganglioma in a patient with a history of carotid and vagal paraganglioma: metastatic or primary tumor?

Paragangliomas (PGs) are extremely rare multicentric neoplasms. Hereditary or familial PGs are associated with germline mutations in succinate dehydrogenase genes, seen in one-third of cases. Primary PGs of the thyroid are uncommon neuroendocrine neoplasms that account for 0.012% of all head and neck lesions. Although majority of these tumors are solitary, familial PGs are associated with synchronous tumors (carotid/vagal). We report an interesting case of primary thyroid PG in a patient with a previous history of a right carotid body, right vagal PGs and positive familial history, confining t

Mutation of Pten/Mmac1 in mice causes neoplasia in multiple organ systems.

Pten/Mmac1+/- heterozygous mice exhibited neoplasms in multiple organs including the endometrium, liver, prostate, gastrointestinal tract, thyroid, and thymus. Loss of the wild-type allele was detected in neoplasms of the thymus and liver. Surprisingly, tumors of the gastrointestinal epithelium developed in association with gut lymphoid tissue. Tumors of the endometrium, thyroid, prostate, and liver were not associated with lymphoid tissue and appeared to be highly mitotic. In addition, these mice have nonneoplastic hyperplasia of lymph nodes that was caused by an inherited defect in apoptosis

Diffuse lipomatosis of the thyroid and thyroid papillary carcinoma, lipomatous type: A case report.

Diffuse lipomatosis, characterized by the widespread presence of mature adipose tissue within the thyroid, is a rare condition. The presence of adipose tissue may vary within the neoplastic nodules in cases of diffuselipomatosis. Although the etiology remains unclear, it is generally regarded as an embryological developmental anomaly. This case report presents a 68-year-old female patient presented to the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) clinic with complaints of neck swelling. Ultrasonographic examination revealed an enlarged thyroid gland and a 2 cm nodule. The patient subsequently underwent the

An Unusual Case of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma and A Revision of Current Literature.

BACKGROUND: Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) accounts for 5% of all thyroid cancers and occurs either sporadically or in a hereditary pattern. Routine calcitonin (CT) measurement is suggested for MTC screening in patients with nodular thyroid disease. PATIENT FINDINGS: A 45 years-old woman incidentally discovered, with neck ultrasound, the presence of thyroid micronodules. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) on thyroid prevailing nodule did not demonstrate cellular atypia. During follow-up, FNA was repeated on the previously analyzed nodule suspicious for Hürthle cell nodule suspicious for follicular

Malignancy in Pediatric Hyperfunctioning Thyroid Nodules: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid nodules are rare in children but carry a markedly higher risk of malignancy compared to adults (20%-26% vs. 5%). Hyperfu … when hyperfunction coexists with indeterminate or suspicious imaging features. Follicular-patterned thyroid neoplasms showing papillary architecture pose diagnostic challenges in children, and molecular analysis may assist risk stratification and elucidate pathogenetic mechanisms linking autonomous function and malignant transformation.

Incidental Uptake of 18 F-AlF-NOTA-pentixather PET/CT in Anaplastic Thyroid Carcinoma.

We present the 18 F-AlF-NOTA-pentixather PET/CT findings in a 53-year-old man with papillary thyroid carcinoma and cervical lymph node metastases. The patient underwent 18 F-AlF-NOTA-pentixather PET/CT for evaluation of primary aldosteronism, which incidentally revealed a thyroid neoplasm. PET/CT demonstrated increased radiotracer uptake in a thyroid mass and bilateral cervical lymph nodes, suggesting neoplastic involvement. Postoperative histopathology confirmed anaplastic thyroid carcinoma with lymph node metastases.

Thyroid metastasis from breast cancer presenting with diffuse microcalcifications on sonography: a case report.

Microcalcifications are frequently associated with papillary thyroid cancers. Metastatic nodules from extrathyroid malignancies may mimic primary thyroid neoplasm on sonography, but do not present with microcalcifications. We report the case of a 45-year-old woman with a history of invasive ductal carcinomas of bilateral breasts, status post surgery and neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Four years after surgery, thyroid sonography revealed diffuse microcalcifications without nodular component. Core needle biopsy confirmed thyroid metastasis from primary breast cancer.

Biomarker identification through spatial proteomics for the characterization of indeterminate thyroid nodules.

PURPOSE: The identification of novel molecular biomarkers may assist in the characterization of indeterminate thyroid nodules, which pose significant diagnostic challenges. Here, we aimed to explore the potential of proteomic analyses to support biomarker discovery in challenging thyroid lesions. METHODS: Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) was applied to Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MALDI-MSI) data from 44 thyroid neoplasms to select the most impactful molecular features for the classification of different tumor histologies, as well as for the distinc…

Extensive mucoepidermoid carcinoma-like differentiation in follicular carcinoma of the thyroid.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is a rare malignant thyroid neoplasm. Cases of MEC with papillary, insular, and anaplastic thyroid carcinoma have been reported. Here, we present a case of follicular carcinoma with extensive MEC-like differentiation. A 62-year-old female presented with complaint of thyroid swelling for 10 years. Cytological features were suggestive of follicular neoplasm. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed metastasis to lung and vertebrae. Salivary glands and breasts were normal on examination and imaging. Subtotal thyroidectomy with bilateral neck dissection surgery w

Utilizing PTEN immunohistochemistry as a screening test for Cowden syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Cowden syndrome (CS) is a multisystem disease with an elevated lifetime risk of internal malignancy. We aim to assess the role of PTEN immunostain as a screening test for CS in a variety of common CS-associated neoplasms, with a particular focus on cutaneous tumors. METHODS: We retrospectively searched for patients meeting criteria for CS and/or demonstrating germline PTEN mutation from 2008 to 2022. We then performed PTEN immunostains on tumors of these patients as well as control cases. RESULTS: Our study included 30 patients with CS who had a total of 25 CS-associated malignan

Incidence of spontaneous neoplasms in F344 rats throughout the natural life-span.

The age-related incidence of spontaneously occurring neoplasms and degenerative diseases in the F344 inbred rat strain was established from the histologic examination of tissues from 160 male and 192 female rats kept throughout their natural life-span. The most common neoplasms were leukemias (25%), mammary tumors (females, 40.6%; males, 23.1%), pituitary adenomas (females, 35.9%; males, 23.8%), and testicular interstitial cell tumors (males, 85%). Various less common neoplasms were observed: thyroid interstitial cell tumors, adrenocortical adenomas, carcinomas of the genitourinary tract, repr

Ultrasound-Guided Microwave Ablation of Thyroid Schwannoma.

Thyroid schwannoma, a rare neoplasm of the thyroid gland, originates from Schwann cells that form the myelin sheath. A 47-year-old woman presented with a progressively enlarging thyroid nodule, which was monitored by repeated ultrasonography over the previous 2 years. Following a diagnosis of thyroid schwannoma by core needle biopsy and immunohistochemical staining, the patient underwent ultrasound-guided microwave ablation (MWA). Subsequent thyroid ultrasounds indicated a gradual decrease in the tumor's volume, achieving a 12-month volume reduction ratio of 79.20%. No complications were obser

Intrathyroidal ectopic thymus in 8-year-old girl: a case report.

We provide a case report of two thyroid nodules in an 8-year-old girl, which revealed malignant ultrasonographic findings and which were confirmed as ectopic thymic tissue by total thyroidectomy. The ultrasound presentations of intrathyroidal thymus glands were similar to those of the malignant thyroid nodules. In addition, in this case, there were two ectopic thymus lesions in the thyroid gland, which undoubtedly increased the difficulty of diagnosis. The occurrence of multiple ectopic thymic lesions in the thyroid gland was different from previous reports. Therefore, clinicians should take i
