We report a case of overlooked Subacute Thyroiditis (SAT) potentially induced by the administration of a COVID-19 vaccine. This case prompted a thorough review of the existing literature to elucidate possible mechanisms by which immune responses to the COVID-19 vaccine might precipitate thyroid damage. The primary objective is to enhance the clinical understanding and awareness of SAT among healthcare professionals. Subacute thyroiditis is a prevalent form of self-limiting thyroid disorder characterized by fever, neck pain or tenderness, and palpitations subsequent to viral infection. The deve

Subacute thyroiditis is inflammation of the thyroid gland, classically presenting with neck pain or discomfort and sometimes with associated diffuse tender goiter and overt hyperthyroid symptoms. Only a few rare cases of subacute thyroiditis presenting as pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) without any of the aforementioned clinical features have been reported in the literature. A 62-year-old male, with a past history of diabetes mellitus, presented with a history of intermittent fever lasting for one month duration. He did not have any significant localizing symptoms, except for a mild headache,

OBJECTIVE: To analyze and compare the diagnostic value of nuclear medicine and ultrasonography in subacute thyroiditis.
METHODS: Sixty patients with subacute thyroiditis admitted to our hospital were included into the observation group, and 60 healthy controls who underwent physical examination in our hospital during the same period were enrolled into the control group. Examinations of nuclear medicine and ultrasonography were performed in the neck, and the results were compared between the two groups.
RESULTS: There were significant differences in the width and thickness of thyroid bilatera

Among the types of acute thyroiditis, subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is rare in children, and there is limited knowledge regarding its characteristics in pediatric cases. We present a case of SAT in a 6-yr-old boy who was brought to our hospital with high fever and pain in the front portion of the neck. Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST), which is common in children, was suspected initially. Tenderness observed in the thyroid corresponded to a hypoechoic region on ultrasonography. The tenderness subsequently shifted to the isthmus, which was evident as a hypoechoic region on ultrasonography. Move…

OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound assessment plays an important role in the diagnosis, and monitoring of subacute thyroiditis (SAT). However, the relationship between ultrasonographic findings and severity or prognosis of the disease is not known. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between bilateral and unilateral disease involvement and severity and prognosis of the disease.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The initial laboratory values, ultrasonographic findings and long-term outcomes of 247 SAT patients were evaluated retrospectively.
RESULTS: In the ultrasonographic evaluation, bilat

A 5-year-old boy presented with intermittent fever for 1 month, painful neck swelling associated with dysphagia, hoarseness of voice for 3 weeks and dyspnoea of 1-day duration. On evaluation, he had elevated serum thyroglobulin levels and inflammatory markers. There was a diffuse glandular thyroid enlargement with hypoechoic areas on neck ultrasonography. Fine-needle aspiration cytology was suggestive of subacute thyroiditis (SAT), and MRI of the neck confirmed narrowing of the trachea by the enlarged thyroid. He received steroids to relieve airway compression. Levothyroxine was started. On fo

We describe a case of quick recovery of myocardium damage in a 15-year-old adolescent with subacute thyroiditis. After 1 week of admission, his cardiovascular status began to show signs of improvement accompanied by the recovery of electrocardiogram and indicators of myocardial damage. We speculate that myocardium damage associated with subacute thyroiditis is a complication of common virus, although we did not detect any abnormal virus antibody and deoxyribonucleic acid in the patient's serum.

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate 3-dimensional (3-D) cytomorphology in fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of subacute thyroiditis.
STUDY DESIGN: Ultrasound-guided FNAB was performed on the inflamed area of the thyroid from 4 patients with subacute thyroiditis. The aspirates were stained and observed under a light microscope (LM). The aspirates were also fixed, dehydrated, critical point dried, spattered with gold ions and observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). For transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the specimen was fixed, dehydrated, embedded in an Epon mixture, cut with an ultrami

Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is a spontaneously remitting inflammatory disorder of the thyroid, associated with human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B35, and may be virally induced in genetically predisposed individuals. A 57-year-old Caucasian man presented with symptoms of hyperthyroidism as well as enlargement and tenderness of the thyroid. The patient had an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, low thyrotropin (TSH) and elevated thyroxine and triiodothyroinine levels with suppressed 131I thyroidal uptake. He was diagnosed to have SAT. In the patient's family three sisters and one brother also h

Subacute thyroiditis is an inflammatory disorder of the thyroid caused probably by viruses. It is clinically characterized by the presence of anterior cervical pain and/or painful goiter, and rarely as fever of unknown origin or as prolonged fever syndrome. We report a case of a 49-year-old female admitted to the hospital because of fever during last month, leukocytosis and accelerated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Following observation, slight tenderness over the thyroid gland and signs of hyperthyroidism occurred. After the laboratory studies, low thyroidal radioactive iodine uptake and fi

INTRODUCTION: The first report on ultrasonic findings in subacute thyroiditis was published in 1975 (1). More detailed studies combining ultrasonographic and clinical findings are still missing. The present paper compares echostructure of the thyroid gland with the level of hormones--triiodthyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), thyroidstimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroglobulin (tg) and thyroglobulin autoantibodies (tg-ab).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 30 patients with subacute thyroiditis de Quervain. The diagnosis was based on typical clinical symptoms, ultrasonic findings, metabolic

We describe a 39-year-old woman presenting with a painless solitary thyroid nodule, initially without signs suggesting thyroiditis. The serum level of thyrotropin was suppressed whereas those of thyroxine and triiodothyronine were normal. Fine needle aspiration cytology showed no signs of inflammation or malignancy. One week later, the patient felt pain and tenderness on her neck, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein were markedly elevated. Thyroid scintigraphy showed a suppressed thyroid pertechnetate uptake. At that time, the diagnosis of subacute thyroiditis was made. U

Five hyperthyroid patients (two men and three women) with typical features of subacute thyroiditis were treated with sodium ipodate (Oragrafin; 0.5 g, orally daily or every other day) for 15-60 days; the treatment was stopped when both serum T4 and T3 levels were normal. All patients studied demonstrated a prompt normalization of serum T3, improvement in clinical symptoms of hyperthyroidism, and/or weight gain. We observed no side-effects of treatment with sodium ipodate. Our data suggest that sodium ipodate is a safe and effective agent for management of hyperthyroidism in subacute thyroiditi
