Maternal perception of fetal movements in late pregnancy is affected by type and duration of fetal movement.

OBJECTIVE: A reduction in fetal movements has been proposed to identify pregnancies at risk of stillbirth. The utility of this approach is limited by variability in maternal perception of fetal movements. We aimed to determine the proportion of fetal movements observed by ultrasound that were maternally perceived and identify factors that affected maternal perception. METHOD: During 30-min recordings, women (n = 21) depressed a trigger upon perception of a fetal movement, while an ultrasound operator recorded observed movements according to the fetal parts involved. RESULTS: Women perceived

Determinants of Speech Perception Outcomes After Hearing Aid Fitting in Conductive and Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Prospective Longitudinal Observational Study.

Background/Objectives: Hearing loss is a leading cause of disability worldwide, with speech perception representing a key functional outcome of auditory rehabilitation. While hearing aids improve audibility, outcomes vary substantially across clinical subgroups. This study aimed to compare speech perception outcomes after hearing aid fitting in adults with conductive and sensorineural hearing loss and to identify determinants of variability in rehabilitation outcomes. Methods: This prospective longitudinal observational study included 250 adults with clinically confirmed bilateral conductive o

Music, clicks, and their imaginations favor differently the event-based timing component for rhythmic movements.

The involvement or noninvolvement of a clock-like neural process, an effector-independent representation of the time intervals to produce, is described as the essential difference between event-based and emergent timing. In a previous work (Bravi et al. in Exp Brain Res 232:1663-1675, 2014a. doi: 10.1007/s00221-014-3845-9 ), we studied repetitive isochronous wrist's flexion-extensions (IWFEs), performed while minimizing visual and tactile information, to clarify whether non-temporal and temporal characteristics of paced auditory stimuli affect the precision and accuracy of the rhythmic motor p

Visually-based temporal distortion in dyslexia.

In this study, we show that invisible flicker adaptation reduces the perceived duration of a subsequently viewed stimulus in control subjects, but not in dyslexics. Dyslexics, like controls, show apparent duration compression after 20Hz flicker and show normal shifts in apparent temporal frequency after adaptation. However a subgroup of the test group, scoring low on both a test of phonological skill (spoonerisms) and a test of literacy (NART), show an apparent temporal expansion after 5Hz flicker adaptation, a finding not previously seen in controls. Recent studies have linked genes conferrin

Atypical pattern of discriminating sound features in adults with Asperger syndrome as reflected by the mismatch negativity.

Asperger syndrome, which belongs to the autistic spectrum of disorders, is characterized by deficits of social interaction and abnormal perception, like hypo- or hypersensitivity in reacting to sounds and discriminating certain sound features. We determined auditory feature discrimination in adults with Asperger syndrome with the mismatch negativity (MMN), a neural response which is an index of cortical change detection. We recorded MMN for five different sound features (duration, frequency, intensity, location, and gap). Our results suggest hypersensitive auditory change detection in Asperger

Spatial and temporal auditory processing deficits following right hemisphere infarction. A psychophysical study.

Higher auditory function in a patient was investigated following a right hemisphere infarction between the middle and posterior cerebral artery territories involving the insula. The patient complained of lack of musical appreciation and a battery of tests confirmed a dissociated receptive musical deficit in the presence of normal appreciation of environmental sounds and speech. The ability to detect continuous changes in sound frequency in the form of sinusoidal frequency modulation was preserved. There was, however, a deficit in the analysis of rapid temporal sequences of notes which could un

The role of spatial selective attention in the processing of affective prosodies in congenitally blind adults: An ERP study.

The question whether spatial selective attention is necessary in order to process vocal affective prosody has been controversially discussed in sighted individuals: whereas some studies argue that attention is required in order to process emotions, other studies conclude that vocal prosody can be processed even outside the focus of spatial selective attention. Here, we asked whether spatial selective attention is necessary for the processing of affective prosodies after visual deprivation from birth. For this purpose, pseudowords spoken in happy, neutral, fearful or threatening prosodies were

People at Risk of Influenza Pandemics: The Evolution of Perception and Behavior.

Influenza pandemics can severely impact human health and society. Understanding public perception and behavior toward influenza pandemics is important for minimizing the effects of such events. Public perception and behavior are expected to change over the course of an influenza pandemic, but this idea has received little attention in previous studies. Our study aimed to understand the dynamics of public perception and behavior over the course of the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic. Three consecutive cross-sectional surveys were administered among Beijing residents with random-digit dialing techn

Time2: A Framework for the Neural Dynamics of Visual Perception.

Whenever we look at an object, we seem to perceive it immediately. However, this is not the case for two reasons. First, it takes hundreds of milliseconds for the brain to process visual information reaching the retina. Second, perceiving an object requires fixating it for some duration-typically hundreds of milliseconds-during which the retina continuously receives new visual information. These facts together imply that visual information is both processed and received through time. These two temporal facets of perception, which we term processing time and stimulus time, are often conflated i

Using auditory reaction time to measure loudness growth in rats.

Previous studies have demonstrated that auditory reaction time (RT) is a reliable surrogate of loudness perception in humans. Reaction time-intensity (RT-I) functions faithfully recapitulate equal loudness contours in humans while being easier to obtain than equal loudness judgments, especially in animals. In humans, loudness estimation not only depends on sound intensity, but on a variety of other acoustic factors. Stimulus duration and bandwidth are known to impact loudness perception. In addition, the presence of background noise mimics loudness recruitment; loudness growth is rapid near th

Low-level deficits in beat perception: neither necessary nor sufficient for explaining developmental dyslexia in a consistent orthography.

This article reports two different studies examining the theoretical account of low-level deficits in beat perception as an alternative explanation of developmental dyslexia in Greek, an orthographically consistent language. Study I examined the relationship of amplitude rise time and frequency discrimination with measures of phonological processing, working memory, and reading fluency in a large unselected sample of Grade 4 children. Study II examined the presence of beat perception deficits in groups of Grade 2, 4, and 6 children with dyslexia and their chronological age controls. The result

"Split-day syndrome", a patient with frontotemporal dementia who lives two days in the span of one: a case report and review of articles.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is among the most prevalent causes of young-onset dementia  . Along with the frontotemporal and striate atrophy, dopamine dysregulation is also present in FTD. The dopamine system controls mechanisms of time perception. Its depletion can cause miscalculations in the perception of time. We present a 72-year-old man with a unique profile of disorientation in time, such that he split each day into two, 12-h intervals. Although through each 12-h period, he went by his daily activities as if a complete day had passed, e.g., he had two sets of breakfast, lunch, and dinn

In Vivo Aroma Release and Dynamic Sensory Perception of Composite Foods.

Condiments such as spreads, dressings, or sauces are usually consumed together with carrier foods such as breads or vegetables. Dynamic interactions between condiments and carriers occur during consumption, which can influence aroma release and perception. This study investigated in vivo aroma release (PTR-MS) and dynamic sensory perception (time-intensity) of mayonnaises spiked with lemon aroma (limonene, citral). Mayonnaises were assessed without and with carrier foods (bread, potato). When different mayonnaises were consumed and assessed alone, aroma release and intensity perception were po

Cerebellar Time and Relative Time: A Comparator-Based Dynamical Timing Model and its Relevance to Psychopathology and Therapies.

Time perception is fundamental to adaptive behavior, providing the scaffold for prediction, coordination, and learning. The cerebellum has long been recognized as a core hub for interval timing, yet its role extends beyond motor control to perceptual chronometry, reinforcement learning, and affective regulation. Here we introduce a novel framework, a Comparator-Based Dynamical Timing (CDT) model which describes distortions of subjective time as transformations that yield compression, dilation, and changes in temporal precision. In this account, subjective time is scaled by a gain factor κ. Whe

Auditory illusory models as proxies to investigate bottom-up and top-down neural networks of phantom perception.

Auditory phantom perception, exemplified by tinnitus, is characterized by a perceptual experience without external stimuli. This study utilized two auditory illusions, the Zwicker Tone (ZT) and Conditioned Hallucinations (CH), as proxies to investigate the neural correlates of bottom-up and top-down mechanisms underlying phantom auditory perception. Using a within-subject design, ZT, driven by temporary sensory deficits, and CH, influenced by multisensory expectations, were examined in a sample of healthy participants. Electrophysiological measures revealed distinct time-frequency patterns, wi

Neuroticism and ethical risk perception among employees: Neurostructural correlates in the left precuneus.

Prior research using psychometric measures has yielded mixed results regarding the relationship between neuroticism and ethical risk-taking. Considering the pivotal role of ethical risk perception in influencing both ethical risk-taking and broader organizational outcomes, it is essential to explore its connection with neuroticism and the neural mechanisms underlying this link. This study employed voxel-based morphometry analysis of structural MRI data to investigate the neural correlates of ethical risk perception, measured by gray matter volume (GMV), and its association with neuroticism in

Adjustment disorders as a stress-related disorder: a longitudinal study of the associations among stress, resources, and mental health.

OBJECTIVE: Adjustment disorders are re-conceptualized in the DSM-5 as a stress-related disorder; however, besides the impact of an identifiable stressor, the specification of a stress concept, remains unclear. This study is the first to examine an existing stress-model from the general population, in patients diagnosed with adjustment disorders, using a longitudinal design. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 108 patients consecutively admitted for adjustment disorders. Associations of stress perception, emotional distress, resources, and mental health were measured at three time points: t

Can psychological interventions affect cardiac rehabilitation patients' well-being? Preliminary results from a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Research has explored the link between psychological factors and cardiovascular diseases [CVDs], with a focus on identifying predictors of these disorders. Cardiac Rehabilitation [CR] is crucial for heart disease patients, particularly those with psychological comorbidities, as it helps in self-care and understanding their condition. This study aims to compare the psychological health of CVD patients - in terms of anxiety, depression, and illness perception - before (baseline, T0) and after (over time, T1) multidisciplinary cardiac rehabilitation treatment, considering the effects

Effects of identity-related voice cues on speech timing under delayed auditory feedback.

Delayed auditory feedback (DAF) disrupts speech timing, but whether this disruption depends on acoustic cues in the feedback voice remains unclear. Twelve Japanese male speakers read sentences while feedback was presented with actual delays of 30-40, 130-140, and 230-240 ms and with pitch shifting and/or spectral-envelope expansion/compression. Mixed-effects analyses treating pitch and spectral-envelope manipulations separately showed that utterance duration increased with delay and exhibited a significant delay-dependent effect of spectral-envelope manipulation, whereas pitch effects were not

Investigating Auditory Perception at Europe's Highest Mountain Lodge.

Altitude hypoxia can impair sensory and cognitive functions, from causing slowed responses to sensory hallucinations. In a field study, we tested 12 expeditioners at varied altitudes (low: 1696 m; high: 4556 m) with a simple auditory detection task and a dichotic listening paradigm in which a voice was presented, lateralized, within a binaural white noise stream. Slower reaction times and a reduced right ear advantage might be expected at high (vs. low) altitude, due to hypoxia. The participants' performances on both tasks did not differ between conditions, revealing that these functions are r
