This article describes optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings in patients with central retinal artery occlusion by conducting a retrospective review of two cases. Central retinal artery occlusion shows a distinct pattern on OCT images. In the acute phase, OCT images demonstrate the increased reflectivity and thickness of the inner retina and a corresponding decrease of reflectivity in the outer layer of the retina and retinal pigment epithelium/choriocapillaris layer. Follow-up OCT images demonstrate a decrease in the reflectivity and thickness of the inner retinal layers and a correspond

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new, non-invasive method for investigating biological tissue, with a beam penetration of up to 3 mm. In this study, OCT was used on porcine and human larynxes. The porcine vocal folds were assigned to defined areas and examined by OCT followed by traditional histomorphological analysis. We were able to validate this new method by demonstrating that both OCT and the histological assays showed a clear demarcation of the epithelium mucosae from the deeper layers. OCT application to human vocal folds delivered same results. The current standard procedure for

BACKGROUND: Measurements of upper airway size and shape are important in investigating the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and in devising, applying, and determining the effectiveness of treatment modalities. We describe an endoscopic optical technique (anatomic optical coherence tomography, aOCT) that provides quantitative real-time imaging of the internal anatomy of the human upper airway.
METHODS: Validation studies were performed by comparing aOCT- and computed tomography (CT)-derived measurements of cross-sectional area (CSA) in (1) conduits in a wax phantom and (2) the

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a novel technique that allows cross-sectional imaging of the anterior and posterior eye. OCT has a resolution of approximately 10 microns, with extremely high sensitivity (approximately 10(-10) of incident light). OCT is analogous to computed tomography, which uses x-rays, magnetic resonance imaging, which uses spin resonance, or B-scan ultrasound, which uses sound waves, but OCT uses only light to derive its image. OCT is a noncontact, noninvasive system by which retinal substructure may be analyzed in vivo. OCT is useful in the evaluation of retinal path

BACKGROUND: The early radiological signs of progression in bronchiectasis remain unclear. The objective of the present study was to compare endobronchial optical coherence tomography (EB-OCT) and chest computed tomography (CT) for the evaluation of radiological progression of bronchiectasis via stratification of the presence (TW+) or absence (TW-) of thickened-walled bronchioles surrounding dilated bronchi in patients with bronchiectasis based on CT, and determine the risk factors.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, we performed both chest CT and EB-OCT at baseline and 5-year follow-u

BACKGROUND: Non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and unstable angina (UA) are caused often by destabilization of non-flow limiting inflamed coronary artery plaques. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake with positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) reveals plaque inflammation, while intracoronary optical coherence tomography (OCT) reliably identifies morphological features of coronary instability, such as plaque rupture or erosion. We aimed to prospectively compare these two innovative biotechnologies in the characterization of coronary artery inflammation, which has

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging tool routinely used in ophthalmology that provides cross-sectional images of the retina. Compression of the anterior visual pathways results in progressive thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and macular ganglion cell complex (GCC) and this review will highlight the utility of OCT in evaluating patients with this condition.
RECENT FINDINGS: The RNFL and macular GCC have been found to highly correlate with visual function in patients with compressive optic neuropathies. Preoperative RNFL and macular GCC

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new noninvasive high-resolution method that measures the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness. An overview of the use in optic neuritis (ON) and multiple sclerosis (MS) is presented. Literature survey of PubMed was carried out. RNFL thickness in eyes of healthy control subjects was 102.9-111.11 microm, in eyes affected by ON 59.79-85 microm, and in fellow eyes 82.73-99.8 microm. All studies found a significant reduction in RNFL in eyes affected by ON compared with fellow eyes and eyes of healthy controls. Two out of three studies found a significan

Background and Objectives: Despite the growing number of new research publications, normative references for children's optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters are still not completed. We chose to explore this topic because of the lack of normative parameters that is due to an improvement in different technologies and instruments. Our aim was to determine referential rates of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and flow deficits (FD%) in the macular choriocapillaris (CC) in normal eyes of ophthalmologically healthy children. Materials and Methods: Ophthalmologically healthy 8- to
