This case report describes a case of severe hemorrhagic tonsillitis in a nine month-old child who suffered significant amount of blood loss and was emergently taken to operating room for control of hemorrhage. The child was brought to emergency room by mom after noticing blood around child's mouth and nose and a subsequent episode of hematemesis having awoken from sleep. Tonsillitis is a relatively well treatable disease. Complications of untreated tonsillitis can even today result in life-threatening complications. The aim of this study is to present a case of a 47-year-old man without previous history of health problems, who suffocated after a brief episode of breathing difficulties. At the forensic autopsy, left-side necrotising tonsillitis with adjacent soft tissue, uvula, and epiglottis swelling and inflammation and significant airway narrowing were found.

Group A Streptococcus (GAS) infection causes recurrent tonsillitis (RT) in some individuals. A recent study (Dan et al. Sci. Transl. Med. 2019;11:eaau3776) demonstrates that RT is associated with an impaired antibody response against a key streptococcal virulence factor. The core tissue microflora of 40 patients who underwent tonsillectomies were examined with cultures, DNA probe tests, enzyme immunoassays, and direct immunofluorescence antibody tests for Chlamydia and Mycoplasma. We believe this is the largest and most accurate prospective study that has examined the role of Chlamydia and Mycoplasma in the core tonsil tissue of patients with recurrent or chronic tonsillitis. The data strongly indicate that, unlike acute tonsillopharyngitis, Chlamydia and Mycoplasma are not involved in recurrent or chronic tonsillitis.
