The aim of this study was to observe apical root surfaces of teeth with chronic periapical lesions. Five premolars and three molars with radiographically demonstrable periapical lesions were extracted and fixed in 2.5% phosphate-buffered glutaraldehyde solution for 9 days. The apical 3-mm portion of 17 roots was removed and prepared for scanning electron microscope. Lacunar resorption zones were frequently observed on the root surfaces. Bacteria and yeast cells were detected in some of the lacunae. Periapical bacterial plaque with a smooth structure was present mostly around the main apical fo

Electronic apex locators (EAL) have been used to establish the working length (WL) in root canal treatment. In teeth diagnosed with apical periodontitis, resorption of tooth apical structures can lead to difficulties to obtain an appropriate WL. The aim was to compare the capacity of three EAL's (Root ZX II, Raypex 6 and Endo-Eze Quill) to locate the tip of the K-file between 0 to -0.5 mm from the apical foramen (AF) on teeth diagnosed with asymptomatic apical periodontitis (AAP). Electronic working length was performed on 60 roots with AAP. A K-file #15 was inserted in the root canal until th

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Debriding and disinfecting complex anatomies within the root canal system pose a major challenge during root canal therapy. Even with current chemomechanical techniques, debris and bacterial remnants are commonly left behind, which are generally believed to increase the risk of endodontic failure. This case details the use of a new technique to debride complex apical anatomy in a maxillary molar.
CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old female presented to the clinic with a chief complaint of increasing pain in her tooth. Clinical examination of the right first maxillary molar (#3) reve

INTRODUCTION: External apical root resorption (EARR) is one of the major problems associated with orthodontic treatment. Such lesions represent an iatrogenic risk that must be detected as early as possible, with regular radiological follow-up and appropriate therapeutic precautions. The causes and mechanisms leading to susceptibility to root resorption following the application of an orthodontic force are often not clear and are generally said to be of multifactorial origin. The aim of this clinical study was to analyze the factors linked to the occurrence of moderate to severe resorption (MSR

SYSTEMATIC REVIEW CONCLUSION: Increased incidence and severity of external apical root resorption (EARR) occurred in patients undergoing comprehensive orthodontic therapy, especially when therapy involved higher levels of force than those commonly used for orthodontic tooth movement. CRITICAL SUMMARY ASSESSMENT: Results from a high-quality systematic review of 11 randomized clinical trials (RCTs) suggests that EARR has a multifactorial etiology; is associated with comprehensive orthodontics; supports the clinical use of light forces, especially during intrusion of teeth; and requires higher-qu

AIM: To investigate the internal and external anatomy of extracted human mandibular canines with two roots and two distinct canals using micro-computed tomography (μCT).
METHODOLOGY: Fourteen two-rooted human mandibular canines were scanned using a high-resolution μCT system (SkyScan 1174v2; SkyScan N.V., Kontich, Belgium). The images were processed to evaluate the size of the roots, the furcation regions, the presence of accessory canals, the mean distances between several anatomical landmarks, the position of the apical foramina, the direction of root curvatures, the cross-sectional appeara

The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between root resorption and repair in human premolars that had been orthodontically intruded. The objective was to examine these processes related to time and root development. Seventy-six premolars were divided into subgroups: 33 teeth were intruded and then extracted (G1); 25 teeth were intruded and then left in situ for varying periods before extraction (G2); 18 teeth served as the controls (G3). All teeth were examined by light microscopy. Using non-parametric statistical analysis, differences between the groups were examined wit

The use of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) for complete endodontic obturation of an immature maxillary central incisor is reported. The injured tooth of a 9-year-old male was avulsed secondary to a sports-related traumatic event. Early attempts at pulpal revascularization of the replanted tooth proved unsuccessful, as evidenced by radiographic signs of external inflammatory root resorption in the middle to cervical thirds of the root. Calcium hydroxide apexification over a 1-year period promoted cessation of the resorptive process, but was unable to adequately form an apical root canal barrie

The purpose of this study was to investigate normal eruptive pattern of upper permanent canine. One hundred and fifty-one panoramic radiographs were used. Inclination of upper canine and lateral incisor, length and horizontal and vertical positions of cusp and root apex of the canine were evaluated. The canine erupted with increasing distal inclination and with no significant changes of the lateral incisor. Developmental changes of the canines relative to palatal plane and midline were shown by figures.

OBJECTIVE: To specify CT scan roll in diagnosis of radicullar cyst invading maxillary sinus.
METHODS: Two cases of 23 and 34-year-old men presented with facial injury and sinusitis was explored by CT scan.
RESULTS: CT scan showed in both patients a cystic lesion, developing into the maxillary sinus around a tooth apex and limits by a double dense thin rim.
CONCLUSION: CT scan permits diagnosis of radicular cyst invading maxillary sinus, in the event of obscured maxillary sinus, when double dense thin rim corresponding to the repulsed wall of the sinus is looking.

AIM: To report the endodontic treatment of an immature maxillary central incisor with dens invaginatus.
SUMMARY: Dens invaginatus is a rare malformation of teeth, probably resulting from an infolding of the dental papilla during tooth development. The present case describes the complex endodontic treatment of a type III dens invaginatus in an immature maxillary central incisor with a necrotic pulp and abscess formation. The initial treatment goal was to achieve apexification of the pseudocanal root and conservative root canal treatment in the main canal. Following 1-year of treatment with cal

BACKGROUND: The boundaries for orthodontic tooth movement are set by the bony support of the dentition. This study compares the mandibular anterior alveolar housing in individuals with low, average, and high mandibular plane angles before orthodontic treatment and measures alveolar bone loss and root resorption after orthodontic treatment.
METHODS: Pretreatment cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 75 non-growing individuals, 25 in three groups: low-angle (sella-nasion to mandibular plane ≤28°), average-angle (30°-37°), and high-angle (≥39°), were analyzed. Buccolingual bone thicknes

Successful management of the avulsed tooth begins at the accident site. Correct first-aid care followed by proper management in the dental surgery will significantly improve the prognosis for the avulsed tooth. The major aim following avulsion is the prevention of further damage to the periodontal ligament and, if possible, the maintenance of pulp vascularity. Studies have indicated that variables such as the extra-oral period, the storage medium and the stage of root development of the avulsed tooth significantly influence the final outcome. Endodontic therapy and chemical conditioning of the

Early loss of immature permanent teeth due to pulpal necrosis secondary to trauma can have dire consequences for a child's growth and development. The treatment alternatives include surgical endodontics, traditional calcium hydroxide apexification, and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) apexification. These options pose potential complications, including: arrest of root development; weakened dentinal walls; and increased potential for fracture. Revascularization of the dentin-pulp complex is a new approach that involves disinfecting the root canal system followed by tissue repair and regeneratio

BACKGROUND: The surgical complexity associated with the palatal roots of maxillary molars was considerably elevated. Previous studies on the relationships between maxillary molar roots and the maxillary sinus or cortical plates have focused on individual root observation without considering the positional relationship between buccal and palatal roots or analysing the surgical pathway of maxillary molar palatal roots. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between maxillary molar palatal roots and adjacent anatomical structures to provide a reference for performing palatal roots endod

The presence of foreign objects in the pulp chamber of fractured permanent teeth is a rare phenomenon and often diagnosed accidently .These foreign bodies are most commonly self inflicted by young patients and remain impacted within the pulp canal thereby acting as potential source of infection and painful conditions. In the present case report, we present successful endodontic management of stapler pin lodged in fractured maxillary central incisor with challenge of open apex in young patient using biodentine as a novel apical matrix.

Radiculomegaly affecting incisors, canines or premolars is a rare radiological finding (Maden et al., 2010) but is pathognomomic of a rare x-linked dominant syndrome called oculo-facio-cardio-dental syndrome (OFCDS). As this syndrome includes cardiac malformations and can lead to blindness due to congenital glaucoma, oral and maxillofacial surgeons should be aware of the somatic anomalies potentially associated with radiculomegaly. We report a typical case of OFCDS and provide the first description of the microscopic dental anomalies associated with this syndrome.

Ehlers-Danlos type VIII is a rare disorder characterized by soft, hyperextensible skin, abnormal scarring, easy bruising, and generalized periodontitis with early loss of teeth. To illustrate the clinical dermatological and dental features, we present the case history of a 20-year-old patient who has suffered from poor healing of wounds at the shins and knees since childhood, which have developed into hyperpigmented atrophic scars. In the course of orthodontic treatment during the last 3 years, severe apical root resorption, gingival recession, and loss of alveolar bone were observed. Family h
