Cherubism.

Cherubism is a benign, hereditary giant cell lesion of the jaws, that appears in children as a bilateral painless swelling, between the ages of 2 and 5 years and progresses until puberty, when it spontaneously regresses. It normally requires no treatment. We had the chance to operate on a 5-year-old boy with cherubism 8 years ago, and used homogenous bone grafts to replace the diseased tissue to avoid pathological fracture of the mandible. Since then we have been following the patient, witnessing the gradual involvement of other sites in the jaws and the displacement of teeth and tooth germs.

The Semaphorin 3A-AKT axis-mediated cell proliferation in salivary gland morphogenesis and adenoid cystic carcinoma pathogenesis.

We recently demonstrated that Semaphorin 3 A (Sema3A), the expression of which is negatively regulated by Wnt/β-catenin signaling, promotes odontogenic epithelial cell proliferation, suggesting the involvement of Sema3A in tooth germ development. Salivary glands have a similar developmental process to tooth germ development, in which reciprocal interactions between the oral epithelium and adjacent mesenchyme proceeds via stimulation with several growth factors; however, the role of Sema3A in the development of salivary glands is unknown. There may thus be a common mechanism between epithelial …

[Development of chewing center at transition period from sucking to chewing].

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to identify and to characterize the peripheral movement evoked by electrical stimulation given to the masticatory area of the cerebral cortex (Control group), and to clarify the development of the chewing center by examining the change in the peripheral movement when the tooth germs have been enucleated (Enucleation group). Puppies were used in the present study which were anesthetized with a 25% solution of Urethane (4 ml/kg, i.p.). Their heads were then, fixed in a stereotaxic apparatus, and the surfaces of the orbital gyrus was surgically exposed. E…

Mesiodens Removal: Resolving the Early Versus Late Intervention Dilemma.

BACKGROUND: This narrative review examines the surgical timing dilemma for impacted mesiodens removal. Early intervention risks iatrogenic damage to developing tooth structures, while delayed surgery may permit irreversible damage to adjacent permanent teeth including impaired root development and eruption disturbances. FINDINGS: Current evidence supports early surgical intervention around 6 to 7 years of age. Recent cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) studies demonstrate shorter root lengths and delayed formation stages in teeth adjacent to impacted mesiodens. Large-scale studies show tuber

Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Study Of Crown Dilaceration With a Talon Cusp in an Unerupted Permanent Maxillary Tooth.

This article describes a rare case of crown dilaceration with a talon cusp in an unerupted permanent maxillary central incisor. Our patient was a 7-year-old boy with a history of trauma to his primary maxillary teeth (#51 and 52), at 3 years of age complaining of failure of eruption of tooth #11. Periapical radiography showed incomplete formation of tooth root #11 and more superior position of tooth bud #11 relative to tooth bud #12. A cone-beam computed tomography was ordered, which revealed crown dilaceration with a talon cusp in tooth bud #11. The patient was scheduled for follow-up at 6 mo

An idiosyncratic post-traumatic tetrad: compound odontome, dentigerous cyst, impaction, and double-dilaceration.

OBJECTIVE: This report describes the case of a 13-year-old patient who experienced traumatic intrusion of the primary maxillary right central incisor and subsequently suffered an atypical tetrad, comprising of an unerupted compound odontoma associated with a dentigerous cyst, and an impacted, doubly dilacerated permanent maxillary right central incisor; however, the high interconnectivity of the occurrence of four pathologies together is unusual has not previously been reported. SUMMARY: The pathologies were detected 7 years after trauma; surgical removal of odontome along with the dentigerou

Radiographic evolution of a dentigerous cyst associated with a deeply impacted mandibular first molar in a pediatric patient: a CBCT-based longitudinal case report with minimal-visit orthodontic management.

A deeply impacted mandibular first molar associated with a dentigerous cyst is an uncommon clinical presentation, particularly in pediatric patients. This case report describes a 9-year-old boy who presented with delayed eruption of the mandibular right first molar. Panoramic radiography revealed a well-defined unilocular radiolucent lesion associated with a deeply impacted tooth, while cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) demonstrated buccolingual cortical expansion and thinning, displacement of the adjacent second molar germ, and close proximity to the inferior alveolar canal. Based on clini

Immunohistochemical localization of syndecan-1 in the dental follicle of postnatal mouse teeth.

BACKGROUND: Syndecans are cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycans that modulate the action of growth factors and extracellular matrix components. Syndecan-1 plays important roles during early tooth development, and it is expressed in the dental follicle of fetal tooth germ. However, no studies have followed its expression in the dental follicle during the postnatal period. We hypothesized that syndecan-1 protein expression in the dental follicle may be important for postnatal tooth development, and, thus, examined its expression patterns. METHODS: Syndecan-1 protein expression in the denta…

Developmental malformation of primary and permanent dentition: a rare sequel of trauma.

Dentofacial injuries that occur prior to the eruption of primary teeth can result in developmental disturbances not only in the primary but also in permanent dentition. Here we report a rare case of long term sequelae of trauma in a female child of 4 to 5 months of age which resulted in dilaceration and impaction of maxillary primary central incisors and subsequent enamel hypoplasia of the permanent maxillary central incisors.

Treatment of large jaw bone cysts in children.

Odontogenic cysts are classified into 2 main types based on their formation mechanism: inflammatory and developmental. Radicular cysts are the most common inflammatory cysts, while dentigerous cysts are developmental cysts. We report 2 radicular cysts that developed at the apices of nonvital primary teeth and 2 dentigerous cysts. All 4 patients were young girls who experienced swelling in the mandibular molar region. Panoramic radiographs revealed a large cyst under the primary second molar, displacing the permanent second premolar or first molar to near the mandible's lower border. The treatm

Dentinogenesis and Tooth-Alveolar Bone Complex Defects in BMP9/GDF2 Knockout Mice.

Tooth development is regulated by sequential and reciprocal epithelium-mesenchymal interactions and their related molecular signaling pathways, such as bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs). Among the 14 types of BMPs, BMP9 (also known as growth differentiation factor 2) is one of the most potent BMPs to induce osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. The purpose of this study was to examine potential roles of BMP9 signaling in tooth development. First, we detected the expression pattern of BMP9 in tooth germ during postnatal tooth development, and we found that BMP9 was widely expre…

Fate of the molar dental lamina in the monophyodont mouse.

The successional dental lamina (SDL) plays an essential role in the development of replacement teeth in diphyodont and polyphyodont animals. … The lingual lamina was associated with the dental stalk, a short epithelial connection between the tooth germ and the oral epithelium. The dental stalk remained in contact with the oral epithelium throughout tooth development up to eruption when connective tissue and numerous capillaries progressively invaded the dental stalk. The buccal side of the dental …

The development and fate of the dental lamina of the mandibular first molar tooth in the rat.

The lamina of the first mandibular molar teeth of rats, age range 13 d intrauterine (i.u.) to 16 d postnatal (p.n.), was examined by light and transmission electron microscopy to establish histological baselines of its development and fate. All material was obtained from animals anaesthetised with ether, killed by cervical dislocation and prepared by routine methods for both types of examination. Contrary to earlier reports that the lamina remains intact throughout development, mesenchymal elements disrupt the lamina. These were seen first at 19 d i.u., as collagen-filled bays in the basal epi
