Influence of the relative enamel abrasivity of toothpastes (REA value) on the wear of eroded enamel.

Eroded enamel is more susceptible to abrasion than healthy one. The present study aims to determine the impact of toothpaste abrasiveness (REA-value) and brushing force on enamel wear after erosion. 140 enamel samples from bovine teeth were divided into seven groups (N = 20). Each group was assigned a different toothpaste with varying levels of abrasiveness (groups 1+2: Candida Parodin (REA 2), groups 3+4: Candida Multicare (REA 9), and groups 5+6: Candida White Micro Crystals (REA 19)). The samples were first exposed to a citric acid solution (pH 2.60; 2 min) to simulate an erosive attack and

Evaluation of color stability, wear, and fracture resistance of preformed Bioflx and zirconia crowns: An in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: The ideal crowns for primary teeth should be esthetic, durable, and easy to place. Preformed zirconia crowns, although the most commonly used, esthetically pleasing, require significant tooth reduction, lack flexibility and adjustability, and cause wear of opposing teeth. Recently, new high-strength, medical-grade resin polymer preformed crowns have been introduced, promising to address these limitations. AIM: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate and compare the color stability, wear, and fracture resistance of newly introduced resin polymer crowns (Bioflx) with preformed zirconi

Influence of thermo-mechanical aging on fracture resistance and wear of digitally standardized chairside computer-aided-designed/computer-assisted-manufactured restorations.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of thermal cycling and mechanical loading (TCML) aging on fracture resistance and wear behavior of various chairside computer-aided-designed/computer-assisted-manufactured (CAD/CAM) premolar crowns cemented on standardized tooth abutments. METHODS: Eighty chairside CAD/CAM crowns were prepared using lithium disilicate (IPS e.max CAD; EM), zirconia-infiltrated lithium silicate (Celtra Duo; CD), polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (Vita Enamic; VE), and resin nanoceramics (Cerasmart; CS) (n = 20). The specimens were divided into two groups (n = 10). In o

A digital process for additive manufacturing of occlusal splints: a clinical pilot study.

The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a digital process for manufacturing of occlusal splints. An alginate impression was taken … found it comfortable to use. The splint relieved tension in the patient's bite muscles. No sign of tooth wear or significant splint wear was detected after six months of testing. Modern digital technology enables us to manufacture clinically functional occlusal splints, which might reduce costs, dental technician working time and chair-side time. Maximum-di …

Periostitis and osteitis associated with hyaline bodies.

Twenty four cases of periostitis and osteitis associated with hyaline bodies are reviewed. The condition primarily affects the premolar and molar region of the mandible in patients who wear dentures. It is suggested that exogenous foreign material, especially from leguminous food impacted into the tissues following tooth extraction, is involved in the pathogenesis of the lesions. In dentate patients there are several other routes by which such material could gain access to the deeper tissues.

Cementum thickening leads to lower whole tooth mobility and reduced root stresses: An in silico study on aging effects during mastication.

In the course of a lifetime the crowns of teeth wear off, cementum thickens and the pulp closes-in or may stiffen. Little is known about how these changes affect the tooth response to load. Using a series of finite element models of teeth attached to the jawbone, and by comparing these to a validated model of a 'young' pig 3-rooted tooth, the effects of these structural changes were studied. Models of altered teeth show a stiffer response to mastication even when material properties used are identical to those found in 'young' teeth. This stiffening response to occlusal loads is mostly caused

The Octagon Model: a clinical tool for assessing marginal tissue recession.

The Octagon Model is a clinical assessment tool designed to assess marginal tissue recession (MTR) and estimate the level of difficulty in achieving root coverage. It evaluates eight patient- and siterelated factors: patient's expectations, smoking status, width of keratinized tissue, absence/presence of cervical lesion, interproximal soft tissue/bone level, depth and width of recession defect, and buccal bone thickness. The model is presented in a three-colored diagram to facilitate communication between clinicians and between clinicians and their patients, and to assist clinicians in optimiz

The effect of frequent removable partial denture wearing on alveolar bone resorption.

AIM: To determine the influence of frequent removable partial denture (RPD) wearing on the alveolar bone density changes around the abutment teeth. METHODS: Fifty examinees of both genders, wearing partial dentures, were included in the study. Thirty one of the examinees (62%) were wearing the dentures 24 hours a day, while nineteen (34%) of them were wearing them only during the day. The changes in the bone density around the abutment teeth were determined by the intraoral microdensitometry method. Standard retroalveolar radiographs were performed twice. The first one before the removable pa

Transition to agriculture in South-Eastern Arabia: Insights from oral conditions.

OBJECTIVES: In Southeast (SE) Arabia, agriculture is supposed to expand around 3000 BC, but its tempo and its actual role in populations' subsistence is still debated by archaeologists. Here, we compare dental health conditions of 11 skeletal samples from coastal and inland sites, dated from the Late Neolithic (ca. 4500-3100 BC) to the Early Bronze Age (EBA), conventionally divided into Hafit (ca. 3100-2700 BC) and Umm an-Nar period (ca. 2700-2000 BC). The goal is to assess long-term trends in subsistence patterns and regional variability during the local transition to agriculture. METHODS: S

On the relationship of dental microwear to dental macrowear.

Dental microwear analysts have demonstrated that hard diets leave numerous microscopic pits on occlusal surfaces. The relationship between occlusal pitting and gross macrowear, however, is not well known. The current study seeks to elucidate the relationship between dental microwear and macrowear by determining if microscopically pitted teeth are associated with greater expressions of macrowear. This study examined microwear and macrowear on mandibular second molars from 60 prehistoric adult Native Americans representing three dietary regimes (foraging, mixed economy, and agriculture). Initial

Reduction of temporomandibular joint dislocation: an ancient technique that has stood the test of time.

The first known recorded evidence for the reduction of a mandibular joint dislocation is documented in a papyrus dated to c. 1500 BC that or … neck, could suggest it was a more frequent occurrence in antiquity. This could relate to the heavy tooth wear, frequent antemortem tooth loss and the related sequelae of severe malocclusion and overclosure evident in many surviving ancient Egyptian skulls.

Bruxism in Children and Adolescents and its Association with Some Possible Aetiological Factors.

Bruxism is a nocturnal parafunctional activity represented by grinding and clenching of the teeth. Bruxism is considered to be the most harmful of the parafunctional activities of the stomatognathic system, being responsible for tooth wear, periodontal lesions and joint and/or muscle lesions. This study consists of a group of 189 children (111 male and 78 female) that responded correctly and completely to a questionnaire that contained nine items assessing sleep bruxism. According to our research, there was a statistically significant association between bruxism and headache (p<0.0001), tooth/…

Chronic Traumatic Dental Occlusion: Its Impact on Temporomandibular Joint and Systemic Health, and Clinical Management Strategies.

PURPOSE: Traumatic dental occlusion (TDO) is a multifactorial and dynamic clinical condition that extends beyond localised tooth wear and has been reported to be associated with alterations in temporomandibular joint biomechanics, neuromuscular function and overall masticatory system performance. While acute dental trauma often receives greater clinical attention, chronic occlusal trauma may remain underrecognised in routine practice, despite its potential to influence mandibular movement patterns, modify joint loading and contribute to patient-reported functional complaints. BASIC PROCEDURES…
