BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (tooth decay) can adversely affect child growth, development and well-being and is a leading cause of preventable hospitalisation for pre-school aged children. Four hundred and ninety-one consecutive patients comprising 259 (52.7%) males and 232 (47.3%) females who attended the periodontology clinic of the University College Hospital Dental Centre between May 1995 and May 1996, were recruited into this study. In general, patients who suffer from pharyngeal foreign bodies can explain the time and nature of the object which had been swallowed, resulting in easy diagnosis. Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) is a well-known antibacterial for use in mouthwash formulas, demonstrated to successfully reduce plaque and gingivitis throughout the mouth. Some peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis cases are thought to be caused by the pathogens in the oral cavity; however, the relationship between peritonitis and oral hygiene habits is unclear.
