BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is increased in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and elevated alanine transaminase (ALT) levels. The association between HCC and ALT levels after interferon (IFN) or direct-acting antivirals (DAA) therapy is unclear.
METHODS: Patients with CHC receiving antiviral therapy were included in two large-scale cohorts in Taiwan (T-COACH and TACR). Posttreatment ALT levels were assessed at 24-weeks/12-weeks after the end-of-treatment with IFN/DAA. HCC risk after antiviral therapy were identified for evaluation.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Circulating endothelial cells (CECs) are indicative of vascular injury and correlate with severity of vascular diseases. A pilot study showed that the ratio of CEC to platelet count (CEC/PC) was effective in predicting cirrhosis. Therefore, we evaluated CEC/PC in a larger cohort of patients, correlated it with cirrhosis, and compared its operating characteristics with previously described biomarker for cirrhosis, the AST/platelet ratio index (APRI).

Many antiepileptic drugs act by modulation of ionotropic GABAA receptors or effects on extracellular GABA concentrations. Metabotropic GABAB receptors also affect neuronal excitability but are not recognized as a target of antiepileptic drugs. We investigated effects of GABAB receptors and antiepileptic drug vigabatrin on epileptiform discharges induced by 4-aminopyridine (4AP) in hippocampal brain slices from male mice. The GABAB receptor agonist baclofen caused dose-dependent reduction in frequency of 4AP-induced epileptiform discharges but did not affect amplitude or duration of discharges.
