Histopathologic survey of free-living populations of 2 species of freshwater mussels in Indiana.

Freshwater mussels are one of the most endangered groups of animals in Indiana, with nearly half of the native species either extirpated or listed as "state endangered" or of "special concern." Nationally, numerous freshwater mussel species are considered threatened. Freshwater mussel diseases are not well understood and few published accounts of freshwater mussel diseases with detailed histological descriptions exist. Mass mortality events within mussel populations are increasingly recognized, often with undetermined etiology. Our objective was to determine baseline histopathology in free-liv

[A rare zoonosis in Hungary: cercarial dermatitis caused by Schistosoma turkestanicum blood-fluke].

Several trematodes that parasitize vertebrate animals utilize swimming aquatic larvae to infect the host percutaneously. The most important ones among these parasites are the blood-flukes of birds and mammals comprising species that are also zoonotic. Within this latter group are species that cause the bilharziasis or schistosomiasis of inhabitants of the tropical countries, and other trematode species that are able to penetrate human skin, but do not develop to an adult form of the worm in the body. In temperate climates this latter type of infection occurs mainly in the form of an unpleasant

Treatment of Schistosomiasis in a Patient Allergic to Praziquantel: A Desensitization and Treatment Protocol.

Praziquantel is the mainstay of treatment of Schistosomiasis, which affects at least 262 million people worldwide. It is also used in the treatment of other trematode as well as cestode infections, with few safe and effective alternatives. It is generally well tolerated and allergic reactions are rare. In this report, we present a case of schistosomiasis with a history of a hypersensitivity reaction to praziquantel. Skin-prick and intradermal testing were performed, followed by treatment through rapid desensitization. This protocol may be of value to those patients requiring praziquantel treat

[Fever, malaise and eosinophilia after consumption of raw fish in Italy: infection by a liver fluke (Opisthorchis felineus)].

BACKGROUND: Infection by a liver fluke (trematode) is rare in Western Europe, but recently a few outbreaks caused by this parasite have been described after consumption of raw freshwater fish caught in Italy. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 35-year-old Dutch woman presented with fever, without localising symptoms. Laboratory tests showed pronounced eosinophilia. Microscopy of the faeces showed a liver fluke egg. Upon inquiry, it appeared that she had consumed raw fish (carpaccio of tench) three weeks earlier in a restaurant in Northern Italy. In Italy, 45 people with comparable symptoms were found to be

Pathological and molecular studies of the renal trematode Paratanaisia bragai in Indian peafowls (Pavo cristatus).

Endoparasitic diseases are commonly encountered in free-ranging birds. Although not all endoparasites cause disease, persistent infection with large numbers of parasites almost always affects normal physiological functions, leading to deleterious effects on the host. This paper describes the anatomopathological alterations caused by the renal trematode Paratanaisia bragai in Indian peafowl (n = 3) and examines the phylogeny of these and related parasites. Peafowl from forests in and around the Bareilly region, Uttar Pradesh, India, were necropsied, and microscopic and molecular investigations

Isolation and Molecular Analysis of a Novel Neorickettsia Species That Causes Potomac Horse Fever.

Potomac horse fever (PHF), a severe and frequently fatal febrile diarrheal disease, has been known to be caused only by Neorickettsia risticii, an endosymbiont of digenean trematodes. Here, we report the cell culture isolation of a new Neorickettsia species found in two locations in eastern Ontario, Canada, in 2016 and 2017 (in addition to 10 variable strains of N. risticii) from N. risticii PCR-negative horses with clinical signs of PHF. Gene sequences of 16S rRNA and the major surface antigen P51 of this new Neorickettsia species were distinct from those of all previously characterized N. ri

Clonorchis sinensis: molecular cloning and characterization of 28-kDa glutathione S-transferase.

A 28-kDa glutathione S-transferase (Cs28GST) was purified from a Clonorchis sinensis cytosolic fraction through anion-exchange and glutathione-affinity column chromatographies. A monoclonal antibody raised against Cs28GST reacted specifically to the C. sinensis antigen among trematode proteins. A putative peptide of 212 amino residues deduced from a cDNA clone appeared homologous with 28-kDa GST of trematodes, and its secondary structural elements predicted a GSH-binding site. Recombinant Cs28GST showed GST enzyme activity with CDNB substrate and was sensitive to the model inhibitors. The reco

EXPERIMENTAL ELUCIDATION OF THE LIFE CYCLE OF DREPANOCEPHALUS SPATHANS (DIGENEA: ECHINOSTOMATIDAE) WITH NOTES ON THE MORPHOLOGICAL PLASTICITY OF D. SPATHANS IN THE UNITED STATES.

The echinostomatid Drepanocephalus spathans (syn. Drepanocephalus auritus) parasitizes the double-crested cormorant Phalacrocorax auritus. In North America, the marsh rams-horn snail Planorbella trivolvis and ghost rams-horn snail Biomphalaria havanensis serve as snail intermediate hosts, both of which inhabit catfish aquaculture ponds in the southeastern United States. Studies have demonstrated D. spathans exposure can be lethal to juvenile channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus. Two studies were undertaken to elucidate the life cycle of D. spathans to establish a developmental time line. In bot

Tranmission pattern differences of miracidia and cercariae larval stages of digenetic trematode parasites.

Digenetic trematodes have complex life cycles involving multiple hosts and free-living larval stages. Some species have 2 lar-val stages that infect snails, with miracidia and cercariae using these molluscs as first and second intermediate hosts, respec-tively. Although both larval stages may infect the same snail species, this is accomplished using different chemical cues and may be influenced by different biotic and abiotic factors. Significant differences in the infection patterns of these parasitic stages regarding host size and density were observed in 2 separate field studies. The preval

[Chromosome disorders and immunoreactivity in golden hamsters infected with Opisthorchis felineus].

Opisthorchosis of golden hamster causes the disarrangement of the number and structure of chromosomes of bone marrow cells 15 days after the infection. Analogous changes take place in man's leucocytes under the influence of water-salt extract from adult trematodes. The injury of the chromosomal apparatus advances with the increasing period of the infection and is coordinated with modified immunoreactivity of the organism.

Effects of anthelmintic treatment and feed supplementation on parasite infections and morbidity parameters in Cambodian cattle.

Helminth infections are the cause of morbidity in Cambodian cattle but other factors such as nutritional deficiencies and concurrent diseases may enhance the effects of parasites. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of anthelmintic treatment, feed supplementation, or both on gastrointestinal strongyle (GIS) and trematode infections as well as on morbidity parameters in Cambodian village cattle. At the beginning of the dry season, cattle populations in six villages were randomly assigned to a group: (A) receiving anthelmintic treatment (ivermectin+clorsulon) at week 0; (P) feed pe…

Dicrocoelium spp. in cattle from Wa, Ghana: prevalence and phylogeny based on 28S rRNA.

Dicrocoeliosis is a trematode infection in cattle, sheep and goats caused by the small liver fluke, Dicrocoelium spp. Though endemic in Ghana, its disease situation is poorly understood. In the present study, the prevalence, distribution and worm load of Dicrocoelium spp. in cattle at slaughter in Wa were determined. A total of 389 cattle were screened during meat inspection for liver flukes, and polymerase chain reaction accompanied by DNA sequencing of the 28S rRNA gene was used to identify Dicrocoelium spp. Generally, prevalence of bovine dicrocoeliosis (small liver fluke) stood at 19.54 %

Heterobilharzia americana infection in a Grant's zebra (Equus burchelli boehmi).

Heterobilharzia americana is a trematode parasite (family: Schistosomatidae) of mammalian wildlife that occasionally infects domestic dogs and horses in the southeastern United States. This report presents the first case of H. americana infection in a Grant's zebra (Equus burchelli boehmi). The parasite was diagnosed post mortem as an incidental finding by histopathologic identification of H. americana eggs in the liver parenchyma after the zebra succumbed in an accidental traumatic death. Molecular analysis of a portion of the parasite small subunit ribosomal RNA gene demonstrated 100% identi

Establishment of Fascioloides magna in a new region of Hungary: case report.

During the monitoring of red deer (N = 124) and fallow deer (N = 13) populations in four neighbouring areas, the presence of Fascioloides magna was confirmed in southwestern Hungary. The prevalence and the mean intensity of the infection within the host populations ranged between 0 and 100% and 0-36.3, respectively. The determined prevalences are similar to that observed earlier in other European natural foci. The authors hypothesise that the appearance of F. magna in this region should have been a partly natural- and partly human-influenced process.
