BACKGROUND: In Norway, screening for tuberculosis infection by tuberculin skin test (TST) has been offered for several decades to all children in 9th grade of school, prior to BCG-vaccination. The incidence of tuberculosis in Norway is low and infection with M. tuberculosis is considered rare. QuantiFERONTB Gold (QFT) is a new and specific blood test for tuberculosis infection. So far, there have been few reports of QFT used in screening of predominantly unexposed, healthy, TST-positive children, including first and second generation immigrants. In order to evaluate the current TST screening a

BACKGROUND: The objectives were to estimate the prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among household contacts (HHCs) with active TB patients, and to identify their risk factors.
METHODS: A prospective, cross sectional study was conducted from May to October 2018. All HHCs with active TB cases were included. The subjects underwent two tests: Quantiferon TB-Gold plus assay (QFT-Plus) and tuberculin skin test (TST). Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences 25.
RESULTS: Among 521 HHCs, 101 (24.05%) revealed positive TST and 80 (19.85%) positive QFT-Plus.

Dialysis patients are more likely than the general population to develop active tuberculosis (TB). In these patients, the availability of a highly sensitive and specific test to diagnose latent TB will ensure earlier treatment and decreased progression to active disease. In the current study, the Quanti-FERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-G) test was compared with the tuberculin skin test (TST) for the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among 200 hemodialysis patients and 15 confirmed TB disease cases in a tertiary care center in Saudi Arabia. Among the LTBI cases, 26 (13%) were TST posi

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends evaluation of all household contacts (HHC) of index tuberculosis (TB) patients for TB disease (TBD) and TB infection (TBI). Tests to identify TBI and TBD are preferred but can be skipped in persons living with HIV and children <5 years. There is equipoise on the need for these tests in other HHC.
METHODS: We conducted a superiority, open label cluster-randomized trial in Benin and Brazil to compare three strategies to evaluate HHC aged 5-50 of persons newly diagnosed with drug susceptible pulmonary TBD: Standard: tuberculin skin testing (TS

BACKGROUND: Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) are widely used for detecting latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). However, these tests can yield indeterminate results, posing challenges for clinical management. The management of these indeterminate outcomes varies, creating uncertainty in clinical practice. This study systematically evaluates the effectiveness of repeat IGRA testing versus additional tuberculin skin testing (TST) in resolving indeterminate IGRA results during LTBI screening.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, searching PubMed, Embase, Web of Sc

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most widespread infectious diseases worldwide, typically persisting in the body as a latent TB infection (LTBI). Patients with type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of LTBI progressing to active TB. Therefore, this study determined the prevalence and predictors of LTBI and assessed the agreement between tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) in diagnosing LTBI among type 2 diabetics in Sana'a city, Yemen.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 150 type 2 diabetics in private health facilities in Sana'a in

Heavy exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the etiologic agent of tuberculosis (TB) and among the top infectious killers worldwide, results in infection that is cleared, contained, or progresses to disease. Some heavily exposed tuberculosis contacts show no evidence of infection using the tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon gamma release assay (IGRA); yet the mechanisms underlying this "resister" (RSTR) phenotype are unclear. To identify transcriptional responses that distinguish RSTR monocytes, we performed transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) on monocytes isolated from heavily exposed

SETTING: Latent tuberculous infection (LTBI) is an important reservoir of disease reactivation that is sufficient to generate new cases for decades. The tuberculin skin test (TST) is an important tool to diagnose LTBI; however, neonatal bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination may impact interpretation of TST data.
OBJECTIVES: To analyse the effect of the neonatal BCG vaccine on TST reaction in the first 2 years of life in children with no identified contact with tuberculosis (TB).
DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study in children up to 2 years of age who received neonatal BCG vaccinatio

BACKGROUND: Taiwan has a growing HIV/AIDS epidemic that has recently shifted to an increase among injection drug users (IDUs). IDUs co-infected with HIV and tuberculosis (TB) have a high risk of progression from latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) to active TB.
METHODS: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and correlates of LTBI among IDUs by TSPOT.TB and tuberculin skin test (TST), in a large methadone program in Taipei, Taiwan. Consenting participants were interviewed by a trained worker regarding sociodemographics, substance use history, and health factors.
RESULTS: Multivariate

OBJECTIVE: Interferon-γ release assays (IGRAs) are an important tool for detecting latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (LTBI). Insufficient data exist about IGRA specificity in college health centers, most of which screen students for LTBI using the tuberculin skin test (TST).
PARTICIPANTS: Students at a low-TB incidence college health center.
METHODS: TST and T-SPOT.TB were performed on prospectively recruited students. TB exposure risk was assessed using a questionnaire: Those at low risk were assumed to not have LTBI in order to calculate test specificity.
RESULTS: Of 184 student
