A Comparison of Clinical and Radiographic Signs of Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Pulmonary Disease, Destructive Drug-Resistant Pulmonary Tuberculosis and a Combination of Nontuberculous Mycobacterium Pulmonary Disease and Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

A misdiagnosis of isolated pulmonary tuberculosis (pTB) is highly likely when a patient has nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTMPD) or a combination of nontuberculous mycobacterium pulmonary disease and pulmonary tuberculosis. Frequently, bacterial excretion is absent or only Mycobacteria tuberculosis (MBT) is found. This often results in an incorrect diagnosis and subsequent misinformed treatment regimes. In order to determine possible clinical and radiographic differences between patients with NTMPD (Group 1), destructive drug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis (Group 3) and a c

Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis commonly complicates treated pulmonary tuberculosis with residual cavitation.

Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) complicates treated pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), with high 5-year mortality. We measured CPA prevalence in this group.398 Ugandans with treated pulmonary TB underwent clinical assessment, chest radiography and Aspergillus-specific IgG measurement. 285 were resurveyed 2 years later, including computed tomography of the thorax in 73 with suspected CPA. CPA was diagnosed in patients without active TB who had raised Aspergillus-specific IgG, radiological features of CPA and chronic cough or haemoptysis.Author-defined CPA was present in 14 (4.9%, 95% CI 2.8-7.9

Pulmonary cryptococcosis misdiagnosed as smear-negative pulmonary tuberculosis with fatal consequences.

HIV-associated pulmonary cryptococcosis is under diagnosed, and may progress to fatal meningoencephalitis. We present a case of HIV-associated pulmonary Cryptococcus neoformans infection, initially mis-diagnosed as smear-negative pulmonary TB, which progressed to fatal cryptococcal meningitis. Autopsy series suggest that pulmonary cryptococcosis is common in African AIDS patients, and, due to limited diagnostic capacity, often mis-diagnosed as smear negative TB. Serum cryptococcal antigen testing may facilitate diagnosis in such cases.

[Autopsy case of pulmonary aspergillosis soon after convalescence from pulmonary tuberculosis].

A 70-year-old man with liver cirrhosis and previous gastrectomy admitted for fever, coughing, and bloody sputum soon after convalescing from pulmonary tuberculosis had a peripheral white blood cell count of 9,900/microL, C-reactive protein of 14.1mg/dL, serum albumin of 2.0g/dL, and serum positive for antiaspergillus and beta-D glucan antibodies. Chest radiography showed thickening of the walls of the large residual cavities with previous tuberculosis lesions and infiltrates around them. On day 2 of hospitalization, Aspergillus fumigatus without other bacillus was detected in sputum culture ta

Pulmonary Mycobacterium kansasii infection: comparison of radiological appearances with pulmonary tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: A study was undertaken to determine if there are differences in the radiological appearances at presentation between pulmonary infections caused by Mycobacterium kansasii and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Correct recognition of the organism has important implications with regard to initial therapy and contact tracing. METHODS: The initial chest radiographs of 28 patients with pulmonary M kansasii infection were compared with those of 56 age, sex, and race matched patients with M tuberculosis infection. All patients in both groups were culture positive and none was known to be HIV po

Pulmonary tuberculosis following successful treatment of pulmonary infection with Mycobacterium kansasii.

A case of pulmonary tuberculosis following successful treatment of pulmonary infection with Mycobacterium kansasii is presented. The immunizing effect of an infection with M kansasii and and other nonspecific immune factors are discussed.

Differences in pulmonary nodular consolidation features among drug-sensitive pulmonary tuberculosis and multidrug/extensively-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis: a multi-national multi-center study.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary nodular consolidation (PN) may represent an imaging sign potentially useful in differentiating multidrug-resistant (MDR) pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) from drug-sensitive (DS) tuberculosis (TB) on chest computed tomography (CT). This study aims to confirm the difference in PN features between DS and MDR patients. METHODS: Eastern European (Belarus, Moldova, Romania, Azerbaijan, and Georgia) patient data were obtained from the NIAID TB (National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases Tuberculosis) Portals Program registered before January 2019. Chinese patients were ob

Case of nasopharyngeal tuberculosis complicated with cervical lymph node and pulmonary tuberculosis.

Multiple cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) combined with pulmonary TB are commonly encountered in clinical practice. Nasopharyngeal TB is often ignored because of its hidden location and nonspecific manifestations. A correlation between cervical lymph node and nasopharyngeal TB has been observed; however, reports of cervical lymph node TB complicated with nasopharyngeal TB are rare, potentially leading to missed diagnosis. Herein, we present a case of nasopharyngeal TB combined with cervical lymph node and pulmonary TB. Radiographic findings consistently suggested TB, although multiple

Characterization of pathological features and immune microenvironment in hepatic tuberculosis and pulmonary tuberculosis.

Hepatic tuberculosis (HTB) is rare extrapulmonary tuberculosis that is clinically similar to liver malignancy, making it difficult for correct diagnoses. Pathology is the gold standard for tuberculosis diagnosis. However, there are few reports on the pathological features of HTB. A total of 32 HTB cases were considered and the differences in pathological features and drug resistance were analyzed and compared with those for pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). Enhanced CT scans showed ring-shaped delayed enhancement during the arterial, venous, and delayed phases. Most HTB cases were single lesions,

The impact of anti-tuberculosis treatment on respiratory tract microbiome in pulmonary tuberculosis.

The growing evidence has underscored the significance of interactions between the host and microbiota in respiratory health, presenting a novel perspective on disease management. Yet, comprehension of the respiratory microbiome shifts before and after anti-tuberculosis treatment is limited. This study compares respiratory microbiome profiles in untreated tuberculosis (UTB) and completed TB treatment (CTB) cases with healthy controls, using 16S rRNA sequencing on sputum samples. Significant reduction in sputum microbial alpha diversity was observed in both TB groups when compared to healthy con
