Surface sediments from 17 stations in the Istanbul Strait and Marmara Sea were collected and analysed for major and trace elements by wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (WDXRF). The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of hypodermosis in cattle in the east and southeast of Turkey. For this purpose, a total of 634 sera samples of cattle were collected from Malatya, Elazig and Diyarbakir provinces of east and southeast of Turkey from November 2005 to February 2006. In this study, 640 cattle and 742 sheep slaughtered at twelve abattoirs in Thrace were investigated for hydatid cysts. The infection rate of hydatidosis was 11.6% in cattle and 3.50% in sheep. The cysts were found in 3.15% of 127 calves ( < 1 year old), in 13.6% of 513 cattle (between 1-10 years old), in 2.64% of 720 lambs ( < 1 year old) and in 31.8% of 22 sheep (between 1-6 years old). This study investigated the numbers of melanocytic nevi in Turkish children and adolescents. The research was conducted on 2783 subjects (age range, 7-14 yrs) at three elementary schools in Malatya, Turkey (latitude 38 degrees N). OBJECTIVE: Biotinidase deficiency is an autosomal recessively inherited disorder characterized by neurological and cutaneous features, including sensorineural hearing loss. Although many features of the disorder are reversible following treatment with biotin, the hearing loss appears to be irreversible. In the present study, hearing status of patients with biotinidase deficiency is characterized in a Turkish population.

In this study, we reviewed the demographic and clinical findings of 143 children with measles to draw attention the importance of measles and its complications in Eastern Turkey. Of 143 patients, 75 (52.5%) were boys, 68 (47.5%) were girls. The patients' age ranged from 5 months to 13 years (3.97 +/- 3.11 years). A study was carried out on 430 samples of different foodstuffs (soft cheese, raw chicken, minced beef, sausage, fish) and 400 carcase samples (sheep, young and adult cattle) for screening of Listeria monocytogenes. BACKGROUND: Adjustable gastric banding (AGB) is a minimally-invasive approach which allows adjustment of gastric restriction.
METHODS: The AGB was evaluated retrospectively in a consecutive series at 3 centers. From October 1998 to October 2001, 70 patients (49 women), mean age 34.3 years (18-59) with morbid obesity (preoperative mean BMI 45.2 kg/m(2)) underwent AGB The open approach was employed in the first 35 patients. Diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB) is a distinct clinicopathological entity which is characterized by chronic recurrent sinopulmonary infection and inflammation. It is prevalent in the Far East, but extremely rare in western countries.
