Nine patients (11 elbows) presented with cubital tunnel syndrome that was complicated by calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition disease. Their age ranged from 63 to 86 years, and 8 of the 9 patients were more than 70 years old. X-ray film examination demonstrated the presence of CPPD crystal deposition not only in the elbow but also in the knee, wrist, or spine in all patients. Medial epicondylectomy was performed in 8 patients (9 elbows), while 1 patient with both elbows affected was treated conservatively at his request. Thickening of the ulnar collateral ligament and syno

Neurovascular compression at the thoracic outlet results from one or several local anatomic abnormalities, all involving the first rib to some extent. The pathologic processes produced involve syndromes usually affecting the ulnar nerve, the subclavian artery, or the subclavian vein. The majority of these cases should be managed in a nonoperative fashion and surgical treatment reserved for patients who are unresponsive to these measures. Initial conservative nonoperative treatment with physiotherapy and patient education produces satisfactory results in 70 per cent of the patients. Operative i

Part II of this comprehensive review on magnetic resonance imaging of the elbow discusses the role of magnetic resonance imaging in evaluating patients with abnormalities of the ligaments, tendons, and nerves of the elbow. Magnetic resonance imaging can yield high-quality multiplanar images which are useful in evaluating the soft tissue structures of the elbow. Magnetic resonance imaging can detect tears of the ulnar collateral ligament and lateral collateral ligament of the elbow with high sensitivity and specificity. Magnetic resonance imaging can determine the extent of tendon pathology in

BACKGROUND: There is still debate in the literature on the existence of the arcade of Struthers and moreover the potential role of this structure to cause compression of the ulnar nerve.
CASE DESCRIPTION: In this article we present a patient with ulnar neuropathy caused by a muscular arcade of Struthers, which was detected preoperatively using ultrasound. Symptoms completely recovered following decompression of the nerve by transection of this muscular arcade.
CONCLUSIONS: This case demonstrates that a muscular arcade of Struthers can cause symptoms of ulnar neuropathy. Ultrasound in this ca

In this article, two cases of ulnar nerve neuropathy in Guyon's canal caused by a ganglion cyst are reported. A review of the literature found 73 cases reported in 35 articles of ulnar neuropathy at the wrist secondary to a ganglion cyst. We investigated the pathogenesis of ganglion cysts, which are separated as extraneural and intraneural. At this anatomical area, there are a variety of clinical factors that can also lead to ulnar nerve compression such us trauma, fracture of the hamate's hook, arterial thrombosis, tumors and other anatomical variations. The symptoms may include weakness, par

Using conventional techniques with cutaneous electrodes, 14 parameters of antidromic, motor and mixed segmentary sensory conduction of the cubital nerve were assessed in the first 45 patients presenting to us with some form of electroneurographic abnormality. Changes suggestive of axonal degeneration due to a decrease in amplitude or conduction velocity of the distal segment were found in 17. The remaining 28 patients showed only signs of change in conduction velocity at the elbow and could be classified according to electroneurographic degrees of progressive abnormality. Changes in antidromic

The onset mechanism of cubital tunnel syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome may be similar in haemodialysis patients. Carpal tunnel syndrome is well recognized as a consequence of dialysis-associated amyloidosis. This case report documents the development of cubital tunnel syndrome in a patient on haemodialysis treatment for 10 years. Proliferating granulation tissue at the elbow had entrapped and displaced the ulnar nerve. This was corrected surgically, and the patient experienced immediate relief of the numbness and the "tingling", but the muscular atrophy had not improved after 8 months.

Entrapment or impingement neuropathies are a group of disorders characterized by compression or irritation of peripheral nerves, leading to sensory and motor deficits of a single nerve. Here, we discuss the pathophysiology, clinical presentations, and evidence-based management strategies of the most common entrapment neuropathies, including carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy at the elbow, fibular neuropathy at the fibular head, radial nerve entrapment, and lateral femoral cutaneous nerve entrapment. Additionally, we discuss less common forms of nerve impingement, emphasizing their clinic

PURPOSE: This retrospective case-control study was performed to determine the relationships between features of the ulnar nerve and postoperative outcomes following in situ decompression in idiopathic cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS).
METHODS: The study population consisted of 86 patients who had undergone surgery for CuTS. We evaluated demographic factors, hand dominance, symptom onset time, time from diagnosis to surgery, findings of electrodiagnosis (nerve conduction velocity/electromyography), and preoperative clinical status. Intraoperatively, the ulnar nerve was defined as a definitively

Patient characteristics and predictive factors for outcomes were analysed in 202 cases undergoing simple decompression, primary subcutaneous transposition, or secondary subcutaneous transposition for ulnar nerve compression at the elbow at a tertiary referral hospital. Data from medical charts and a survey were evaluated. The mean patient age was 49 years with revision surgery cases being significantly younger. Sixty-one percent of cases were female, and 31% were smokers. The comorbidity was extensive, including other nerve compression lesions as well as neck and shoulder problems. Overall, 53

From 1900-1995, 48 patients with ulnar nerve compression neuropathies were studied. Pinching grip, palmar adduction of the thumb, radical abduction of the index finger, and ulnar abduction of the little finger, were measured before and after operation with the new computerised intrins-o-meter. The data were processed, assessed statistically, and printed out. From the results of the four parameters mentioned above, a special Ulnar Nerve Function Profile (UNFP) was constructed. The series was subdivided in three groups A, B, C of which group A (n = 30) comprised pure ulnar nerve compression neur

We present a retrospective study of 41 patients treated by simple decompression for ulnar neuropathy. Pre- and postoperatively, patients were evaluated clinically and electrophysiologically. The median follow-up was 2 years (minimum: 0.5 years, maximum: 5.1 years). The leading pre-operative sign was motor loss in the ulnar distribution (36 patients = 89%) with consecutive atrophy of ulnar innervated muscles (30 patients = 75%). The secondary complaint was sensory impairment in 59% of all cases, less frequently patients presented with pain or paraesthesia. In the majority of cases the aetiology

To evaluate the effect of critical anatomic structures on the ulnar nerve after cubital tunnel decompression, we determined the intraneural ulnar nerve pressure in 50 fresh cadavers after the following surgical procedures: simple decompression, medial epicondylectomy, subcutaneous transposition, and submuscular transposition by the Learmonth and by the musculofascial lengthening technique. Intraneural pressure was measured in 0 degrees, 30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees elbow flexion at locations that were proximal, within, and distal to the cubital tunnel. Statistical analysis compared t

BACKGROUND: Cubital tunnel syndrome can be caused by overtraction and dynamic compression in elbow deformities. The extent to which elbow deformities contribute to ulnar nerve strain is unknown. Here, we investigated ulnar nerve strain caused by cubitus valgus/varus deformity using fresh-frozen cadavers.
METHODS: We used six fresh-frozen cadaver upper extremities. A strain gauge was placed on the ulnar nerve 2 cm proximal to the medial epicondyle of the humerus. For the elbow deformity model, osteotomy was performed at the distal humerus, and plate fixation was performed to create cubitus val

To evaluate the effectiveness of subcutaneous subfascial anterior transfer of the ulnar nerve in the surgical treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome in athletes, we retrospectively reviewed athletes undergoing subcutaneous anterior transfer of the ulnar nerve at the elbow. Criteria for inclusion in the study included active participation in athletic activity, confirmed cubital tunnel syndrome, failure to respond to conservative treatment, and having an anterior subcutaneous subfascial transfer as the only procedure performed. Twenty athletes underwent a total of 21 procedures. Results were evalu
