BACKGROUND: A primipara with multiple pregnancy who booked for antenatal care at 21 weeks presented with vaginal bleeding and pedal oedema at the 27th week. She had had five previous ultrasound scans that gave conflicting results.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patient was therefore sent for a confirmatory scan, which was performed using a linear 3.5 MHz transducer of a dynamic imaging dedicated, concept MC ultrasound scan machine.

Out of 247 patients operated for suspected echinococcosis of the liver, 21 (8.5%) cases of non-parasitic diseases of the liver and other organs were revealed: non-parasitic cysts (7), hemangioma (4), abscesses (4), malignant tumors (3), hydronephrosis of the right kidney (2), polycystosis of the liver and right kidney (1). Obesity is a serious problem in our century. Nowadays, the incidence of obesity has been increased to 35%. Two common methods for surgical treatment of obesity are surgical lipectomy and ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL). This study included 40 patients in two groups, 20 patients in the surgical lipectomy group and 20 patients in the UAL group. Patients suffer with various abnormalities of body tissues. "Leiomyoma Uteri" is a solid tumor of uterus, one of such abnormalities. To treat such tumors, basic physical and biologic investigations are required to be carried out. In the present work, ultrasonic characterization of soft tissues, in this case, uterine tumor in vitro, are studied. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate a successful use of ultrasound in the diagnosis of intestinal intussusception in children. Ultrasound decreases the number of irrigographic examinations and reduces diagnostic exposure of children to X-rays. The diagnostic value of endovaginal ultrasound in some perimenopausal endometrial disorders has been evaluated. A search of the literature included in the Medline database system has been performed and more than 20 original papers were reviewed. Endovaginal ultrasound could play important diagnostic role in postmenopausal bleeding, but also in diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and screening of endometrial cancer.

The purpose was to explore by ultrasound the gallbladder in the pregnant woman. A prospective longitudinal study of 292 pregnant woman, was done. Gallstones were detected in 41 patients (14.04%), in other 2 patients (0.68%) sludge in gallbladder. Cholesterolosis was found in 2 patients more (0.68%), and polyposis in another 2 patients (0.68%). During the period of January 1993 to February 1994, 70 pregnant women had an ultrasonic diagnosis of abnormal pregnancy. 111 ultrasound examinations were made--mean 1.6 of each woman. The ultrasonic diagnosis up to 70 women was: missed abortion--35 women (50%), blighted ovum--30 women (42.9%), other diagnosis--5 women (7.1%). Histological examination of material was made with 64 women (91.4%). Comparing the ultrasonic diagnosis to histological results, authors do not recommend a final diagnosis before eight gestation week.

Fifty-five patients (38 and 17), whose age ranged 14 to 153 days, with a clinical suspicion of sternocleidomastoid mass, were examined with US. The entity of caecal faecoliths is not well known to most radiologists. It presents as a hard tender palpable mass in the right iliac fossa. It usually occurs in older women with chronic constipation. On ultrasound it appears as an intracaecal, highly echogenic, shadowing mass. Plain radiographs may show lamellated calcifications. Barium enema shows a well defined intracaecal mass. Using a combination of ultrasound and plain films or barium enema, a preoperative diagnosis should be possible.

The authors present the results of a new method for surgical treatment of aphakic eye glaucoma with the use of low-frequency ultrasound.
