Systematic review of the risk of urolithiasis following parathyroidectomy in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

OBJECTIVE: Parathyroidectomy (PTX) is the conclusive therapy for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), but its effect on the risk of urolithiasis is inconclusive. We comprehensively reviewed the currently available research to investigate the impact of PTX on the likelihood of urolithiasis among individuals suffering PHPT. METHODS: Internet-based articles in English language released on Cochrane, PubMed, Scopus, Web of knowledge, and Embase up to September, 2023 were comprehensively reviewed. Each publication in contrast to the incidence, occurrence, or recurrence of urolithiasis after PTX vers

Multiple Percutaneous Drainage of a Giant Pyonephrosis Caused by Urolithiasis: A Case Report.

The prevalence of kidney stones continues to rise in modern times. Undiagnosed and/or mistreated, it can result in suppurative kidney damage and, in rare instances, death from systemic infection. We present the case of a 40-year-old woman who presented to the county hospital for sleight left lumbar pain, fever, and pyuria for about two weeks. Ultrasound and CT scan revealed a giant hydronephrosis with no visible parenchyma, secondary to a stone in the pelvic-ureteral junction. Although a nephrostomy stent was placed, 48 hours later the purulent content was not evacuated completely. She was ref

DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO MANAGING UROLITHIASIS IN KIDNEY TRANSPLANT PATIENTS - A CASE REPORT.

Urolithiasis is a rare urologic complication after kidney transplantation, and its diagnosis and treatment can be challenging for clinicians. In our 52-year-old male patient, graft hydronephrosis was found six months after transplantation. The patient had recurrent urinary tract infections followed by macrohematuria and an increase in creatinine levels. Computerized tomography revealed a 13-mm diameter stone in the ureter of the transplanted kidney as the cause of obstruction. Percutaneous nephrostomy was placed in the graft to solve the obstruction. Initial endoscopic treatment with a retrogr

Is there a correlation between urolithiasis in horseshoe kidneys and isthmus thickness or renal angulation?

BACKGROUND: Stone disease is a common complication of horseshoe kidneys (HSK). There are currently limited studies that examine the relationship between HSK anatomy and stone formation. We aim to determine if there is such an association by measuring the isthmus size and renal angulation in both stone and non-stone forming HSK using computed tomography (CT). METHOD: This is a retrospective study performed at a single tertiary centre. Using the radiological information system, all CT reports between 01 January 2010 and 31 December 2015 were searched for the keyword 'horseshoe' on the radiologi

Use of tube cystostomy in the surgical management of obstructive urolithiasis in a Bactrian camel.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 6-year-old castrated male Bactrian camel was evaluated because of a 14hour history of oliguria and stranguria that progressed to anuria. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Perineal urethral pulsations and intermittent tail flagging with no accompanying urination were observed. Ultrasonography of the urethra revealed multiple hyperechoic foci with shadowing artifact indicative of calculi present in the penile urethra distal to the sigmoid flexure. Rectal palpation revealed a pulsating hard urethra and intact distended urinary bladder. Further clinical examination was not possible because o

Pediatric urolithiasis associated with acute gastroenteritis: an inpatient database study in Japan.

UNLABELLED: Pediatric urolithiasis associated with acute gastroenteritis (AGE) has not been systematically investigated, including its prevalence, risk estimate, and outcome. Using a national inpatient database in Japan, we searched for children (≤59 months old) who were hospitalized for AGE and those complicated by urolithiasis over a 24-month period. We found 23 cases of urolithiasis among 62,800 children who were hospitalized for AGE (3.7 cases/10,000 AGE admissions). AGE was associated with an increased risk of urolithiasis (odds ratio 2.01; p = 0.015). The patients' mean age was 24 months

[EFFECTIVENESS OF EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCK WAVE LITHOTRIPSY IN PATIENTS WITH UROLITHIASIS OF A SOLITARY KIDNEY].

The article presents results of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in 62 patients with urolithiasis of a solitary kidney. In 50 (80.6%) patients calculi were located in the kidney and in 12 (19.4%) patients in the ureter. Effectiveness of ESWL at 3 month follow-up was 85.5%, which is somewhat lower than in patients with two healthy kidneys due to the choice of sparing low-energy modes of lithotripsy. The effectiveness of ESWL depended on the size of the original calculi (p<0.0001), and the baseline urodynamics of the upper urinary tract (p<0.0001). The rates of complications (32.3%)

Urolithiasis in patients with spinal cord injuries: risk factors, management, and outcomes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite major advances in the urological care of spinal cord injury patients, the incidence of urolithiasis has not changed. Although the incidence of kidneys lost to staghorn calculus disease has decreased considerably, stone disease is still a significant cause of morbidity and concern. The purpose of this review is to summarize the risk factors for the development of stone diseases in the spinal cord injury patient population and present the outcomes of current endourologic treatment modalities. RECENT FINDINGS: Recurrent urinary tract infections, indwelling catheters, v
