A systematic approach to emergencies in uveitis.

Uveitis is a common cause of preventable blindness although it is consider a sight-threatening condition particularly in cases with posterior segment inflammation. To deal with emergency conditions in uveitis, we must aware of the essential signs and symptoms that reflect a true uveitic emergency. Failure to recognize these essential signs and symptoms of a true uveitic emergency may result in a devastating visual outcome. This review provides general ophthalmologists and residents, clinical guidelines for the main uveitic entities that require immediate recognition and urgent intervention in …

Emerging drugs for the treatment of uveitis.

INTRODUCTION: Uveitis is a potentially visually debilitating disease when untreated or poorly controlled. Chronic intermediate, posterior, or panuveitis often requires systemic immunosuppressive therapy to prevent such visual loss. AREAS COVERED: This review discusses existing treatments for ocular inflammation including corticosteroids, antimetabolites, alkylating agents, T-cell inhibitors, and biologic agents. Potential drugs being studied in clinical trials are introducing new routes for local corticosteroid delivery, and novel immunomodulators are exploring new targets of the inflammatory…

Syphilitic uveitis in a Singaporean population.

PURPOSE: To report the presentations of syphilitic uveitides in Singapore. METHODS: Retrospective noncomparative observational case series of 18 eyes from 12 patients with ocular syphilis between 2004 and 2009. RESULTS: Patients were mainly male (91.7%). Median age was 49.5 (24-84) years. Initial visual acuity varied from 6/6 to counting fingers (CF) and was ≥6/12 in 7 eyes (38.8%). Blurring of vision (n = 11, 61.1%) was the most common presenting complaint. Anterior uveitis and panuveitis were both most common (n = 6, 33.3%). Treponemal and nontreponemal serologies were positive in 12 (100.…

Psoriasis and uveitis: a literature review.

Psoriasis is a systemic, chronic, immunologically mediated disease, with significant genetic and environmental influences. It affects from 1 to 3% of the world population. Recently, the relation between psoriasis and different comorbidities, particularly metabolic syndrome, has become extremely relevant. Uveitis is characterized by a process of intraocular inflammation resulting from various causes. Considering psoriasis and uveitis as immune-mediated diseases, this study aims to evaluate the possible association of psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis with uveitis and its subtypes. Few studie…

[Uveitis in patients with multiple sclerosis].

UNLABELLED: Multiple sclerosis (SM) is an idiopathic, demyelinating CNS disease, with often ocular manifestations. Besides the most common SM ocular manifestation-optic neuritis, particular attention should be paid to uveitis. It is estimated that uveitis is ten times more frequent in population with SM than on population without it. PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to present our own observation of clinical course of the uveitis in SM patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 9 patients (7 women and 2 men), who had been treated in 2nd Department of Ophthalmology Lublin Medical School in 1…

Tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis in siblings.

PURPOSE: To report on the occurrence of tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU) and HLA typing in two siblings. DESIGN: Retrospective case study. METHODS: HLA typing from two siblings with TINU syndrome and their parents was performed on DNA from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). RESULTS: The boy developed TINU syndrome in 2001, his sister 5 years later. Both siblings inherited the HLA alleles HLA-DRB1*1401 and HLA-DQB1*0503 on the maternal haplotype, a haplotype that had rarely been observed in patients with TINU. CONCLUSIONS: The observations support inheritance of HLA-l…

The role of chemokines and their receptors in uveitis.

T-cell-dependent immunological events are increasingly being regarded as extremely important in the pathogenesis of uveitis. Several studies have also shown that macrophages are major effectors of tissue damage in uveitis. Neutrophils are also thought to play a central role in the pathogenesis of Behçet's disease. Chemokines are a superfamily of 8 to 10-kDa secreted proteins that direct the recruitment of leukocytes to sites of inflammation. The specific biological effects of chemokines are mediated by a family of seven transmembrane-spanning G-protein-coupled receptors. Recent studies of anim…
