Microscopic polyangiitis is an exclusively small-vessel (arterioles, capillaries, or venules) vasculitis that primarily involves the kidney and often involves the lungs, skin, or nervous system. Characteristic features include focal segmental glomerulonephritis, nongranulomatous necrotizing vasculitis, and serum positive for perinuclear-staining antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (P-ANCA). We report a case of microscopic polyangiitis with previously unreported eyelid and conjunctival manifestations that responded well to immunosuppressive therapy.

In order to provide the basis of microvascular anastomosis for reconstruction of maxillofacial defects from firearm injury by using vascularized free tissue transplantation, we studied the mechanism and pathology of microvascular injuries and the possibility of their early anastomosis. The dogs' face were wounded by 0.7 g or 1.03 g steel spheres whose muzzle velocity were 1300 m/s or 1500 m/s. The injury effects of microvascular angiograms were recorded through high speed X-ray camera at the impacting moment the specimens of small vessel were collected for light and electron microscopy at diff

Lymphocytotoxic antibodies (LCTAB) were sought in sera of patients with rheumatic diseases and in family members. Patients with SLE and cutaneous necrotizing venulitis and family members of JRA patients had an increased frequency of LCTAB; JRA patients and family members of SLE patients did not. The only association between LCTAB and the HLA phenotype of persons with LCTAB was a decreased frequency of LCTAB in individuals with HLA-B27.

The authors examined the relation of narrowed retinal arteriolar diameters, a marker of hypertensive damage, to mortality in a population-based cohort of 4,926 persons aged 43-84 years living in Wisconsin. A computer-assisted method was used to measure retinal vessel diameters from digitized retinal photographs taken at the baseline examination (1988-1990). These measurements were summarized as the retinal arteriole-to-venule ratio (AVR), with a smaller AVR indicating narrower arterioles compared with venules. Its relation to 10-year mortality was analyzed by using Cox proportional hazards mod…

The paraphysis cerebri is a glandular structure found in the third ventricle of lower vertebrates. It is well-developed in amphibians and re … ioles traverse in the periphery of the paraphysis to branch and supply the choroid plexus. Numerous venules exit from the choroid plexus and drain into sinusoids of the paraphysis. The sinusoid venules appear to empty into a midline venous structure which passes tangentially through the paraphysis. The sinusoids consist of fenestrated endothelium which is …

The thinnest areas of the capillaries of the choroid plexus and ciliary processes in the eye of the rabbit are characterized by the presence of fenestrae. When various colloidal particles opaque to the electron beam (thorotrast, gold sol, and saccharated iron oxide) were injected into the blood stream, none were found in fenestrae or in areas that might suggest their having passed through fenestrae. The passage of marker particles from the lumen to the surrounding connective tissue does take place on occasion in the areas of thicker walls in the capillaries and venules rather than in the atten…

BACKGROUND: Lymphaticovenular anastomosis (LVA) is a supermicrosurgical procedure that involves the anastomosis of a functional lymphatic channel to a venule. Although peri-operative care might be an important contributor to the success of this technique, evidence about optimal peri-operative care seems limited. This review aims to summarize the peri-operative methods used by authors reporting on LVA.
METHODS: A systematic search of the literature was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Peri-operative care used by authors w

The pulmonary sections HE stained in 30 autopsy cases of cirrhosis were randomly reexamined. The distribution and degeneration of pulmonary arterioles and venules which were at alveolar level and the diameter of capillaries were observed; 10 autopsy cases of other diseases were examined as control. The results showed tricuspid orifices were dilated in 20% of autopsies; Both lungs were heavier than those in the control group, pulmonary congestion were in 100% of autopsied lungs. Pulmonary artery degeneration occurred in 16.6%, the number of pulmonary arterioles increased in 73.0%, the hypertrop…

Lymphaticovenular anastomosis (LVA) is a widely performed surgical procedure for the treatment of lymphedema. For good LVA outcomes, identifying lymphatic vessels and venules is crucial. Photoacoustic lymphangiography (PAL) is a new technology for visualizing lymphatic vessels. It can depict lymphatic vessels at high resolution; therefore, this study focused on how to apply PAL for lymphatic surgery. To visualize lymphatic vessels, indocyanine green was injected as a color agent. PAI-05 was used as the photoacoustic imaging device. Lymphatic vessels and veins were visualized at 797- and 835-nm…

Background. Brain lesions are common in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOsd) and may resemble lesions of multiple sclerosis (MS). Objectives. To describe the imaging characteristics of supratentorial lesions in NMOsd on ultrahigh-field (7 T) MRI with special attention to vessel-lesion relationship. Methods. Ten NMOsd patients, all women and all seropositive for NMO IgG, with mean age of 51.3 ± 15.4 years and disease duration of 9.2 ± 6.4 years, were scanned at a 7 T whole-body human MR system with high-resolution 2D gradient echo sequence optimized to best visualize lesions and venou

These chimeric proteins supported adhesion both to myeloid cells and to high endothelial venules (HEV) of lymph nodes and mesenteric venules in vivo. Exchange of the SCR domains had no detectable effect on receptor function or specificity. Thus, the EGF-like domain of P-selectin may play a direct role in ligand recognition and leukocyte adhesio …

Wegener's granulomatosis or granulomatosis with polyangiitis is a necrotizing vasculitis affecting both arterioles and venules. The disease is characterized by the classical triad involving acute inflammation of the upper and lower respiratory tracts with renal involvement. However, the disease pathology can affect any organ system. This case presents Wegener's granulomatosis presenting with facial nerve palsy as the first manifestation of the disease, which is rarely reported in medical literature.

Behçet's disease is a systemic vasculitis affecting arterioles and venules and is characterized by recurrent oral ulcers, genital ulcers and ocular inflammation. It can involve any organ but joints, skin, central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract are the most common sites. Here we report an 11-year-old Behçet's disease patient presenting with attacks of myositis accompanied by epididymoorchitis and periodic fever attacks as well as a separate attack of thrombophlebitis.

Laser Doppler flowmetry discovered microcirculatory disorders in acne patients. Affected are arterioles as well as capillaries and venules. Combination of magnetotherapy with medication improves microcirculation in acne patients. More marked positive changes occurred in the microcirculatory system due to combined treatment compared to medication therapy only. Thus, laser Doppler flowmetry is a new, noninvasive method of assessing microcirculation in acne patients and can serve an objective criterion of treatment efficacy.
