Effects of stabilizing reversal technique and vestibular rehabilitation exercise on dizziness and balance ability in patients with vestibular neuritis: An observational study.

Vestibular neuritis is a common disease of peripheral dizziness. Studies have shown that vestibular rehabilitation exercise (VRE) and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) are effective to treat the symptoms of vestibular neuritis. However, the effect of VRE and PNF on the balance ability and dizziness in this patient cohort remains unclear. The aim of our observational study was to determine the changes in dizziness and balance ability of patients with vestibular neuritis who participated in the VRE program with stabilizing reversal technique (SRT).The reporting of this study conform

Relationship between acquisition of motor function and vestibular function in children with bilateral severe hearing loss.

CONCLUSIONS: When vestibular function is reduced in the rotational chair test in children with severe hearing loss, the vestibular function may be acquired later due to maturing vestibular sensory cells and vestibular nerve of the inner ear along with physical growth. OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship between acquisition of motor function and vestibular function in children with bilateral severe hearing loss. METHODS: A total of 97 children under 4 years old with hearing loss defined as a hearing threshold of both ears greater than 80 dB were included in this study. For evaluation of v

Prevalence of hearing and vestibular loss in cystic fibrosis patients exposed to aminoglycosides.

AIM: Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients frequently use aminoglycosides (AGS) to treat CF exacerbation due to colonization with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Although AGS can cause vestibular and auditory sensory losses that can negatively impact quality of life, little is known about the prevalence of vestibular loss in this population. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of hearing loss and/or vestibular dysfunction in CF patients treated with AGS. METHODS: The relationship between hearing status and vestibular status was also investigated. Hearing was determined to be normal or abnor

Suppression head impulse testing is recommended for vestibular testing of patients with untreated unilateral vestibular schwannoma.

PURPOSE: Suppression head impulse testing (SHIMP) is a new vestibular method capable of quantifying vestibular function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of this test in patients with existing or newly diagnosed vestibular schwannoma (VS) patients by comparing the results with the traditionally used video head impulse test (vHIT or HIMP). METHODS: Fifty-five patients with unilateral VS underwent a wide battery of audiological and vestibular tests. HIMP results were evaluated using newly introduced objective guidelines based on the trace evaluation of pathological saccades

Mice with conditional deletion of Cx26 exhibit no vestibular phenotype despite secondary loss of Cx30 in the vestibular end organs.

Connexins are components of gap junctions which facilitate transfer of small molecules between cells. One member of the connexin family, Connexin 26 (Cx26), is prevalent in gap junctions in sensory epithelia of the inner ear. Mutations of GJB2, the gene encoding Cx26, cause significant hearing loss in humans. The vestibular system, however, does not usually show significant functional deficits in humans with this mutation. Mouse models for loss of Cx26 function demonstrate hearing loss and cochlear pathology but the extent of vestibular dysfunction and organ pathology are less well characteriz

Assessment of Vestibular Function in Patients with Congenital Bilateral Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Case-Control Study.

Background/Objectives: The cochlea and vestibular organs develop concurrently during embryogenesis and share anatomical and functional pathways. As a result, congenital factors affecting the vestibulocochlear system may impair both hearing and vestibular function. Despite this, the relationship between congenital bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and vestibular dysfunction remains insufficiently defined. This study evaluated vestibular function in patients with congenital bilateral SNHL and investigated the association between hearing loss severity and vestibular function. Methods: A

There is no evidence of cochlear and vestibular melanocyte damage in patients with alopecia areata.

PURPOSE: Follicular melanocytes are known to be damaged in alopecia areata (AA). However, it is not clear whether melanocytes are the primary target of autoimmunity and whether melanocytes in the inner ear are affected. This study aimed to detect possible cochlear and/or vestibular melanocyte damage in AA patients. METHODS: Thirty-two AA patients and 35 sex- and age-matched healthy volunteers were evaluated between November 2018 and March 2020 at the Karabük University Training and Research Hospital. Evaluation of oculomotor tests in patients with tinnitus.

Tinnitus as a symptom remains a serious multidisciplinary problem. Vertigo or dizziness is not noticed frequently in tinnitus patients, so vestibular function is not often studied. Because they are in close proximity to one another, the vestibular and hearing organs may influence each other. We decided to evaluate the results of the oculomotor reflex in tinnitus patients. We carried out clinical examinations and audiological and oculomotor tests in 50 tinnitus patients and 30 healthy persons. Such oculomotor tests as smooth-pursuit eye movement, optokinetic tests, and saccadic eye movement and

[Paradigm shift in management of patients with vertigo and imbalance].

Dizziness is one of the most common causes of medical visits. Management of the dizzy patient may be challenging both for the general practitioner, in emergency departments, and special clinics, as behind a seemingly homogeneous clinical presentation several very different etiologies may occur. Research of the last two century enriched our knowledge about physiology and pathophysiology of the vestibular system. Much knowledge is now available about the labyrinth being able to sense head motions and gravity, processing of afferent vestibular stimuli, reflectory oculomotor and postural control,
