Differential Involvement during Latent Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Infection of the Superior and Inferior Divisions of the Vestibular Ganglia: Implications for Vestibular Neuritis.

Controversy still surrounds both the etiology and pathophysiology of vestibular neuritis (VN). Especially uncertain is why the superior vestibular nerve (SVN) is more frequently affected than the inferior vestibular nerve (IVN), which is partially or totally spared. To address this question, we developed an improved method for preparing human vestibular ganglia (VG) and nerve. Subsequently, macro- and microanatomical as well as PCR studies were performed on 38 human ganglia from 38 individuals. The SVN was 2.4 mm longer than the IVN, and in 65% of the cases, the IVN ran in two separate bony ca

Cortico-cortical connections and cytoarchitectonics of the primate vestibular cortex: a study in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

The cortical connections of two vestibular fields [parieto-insular vestibular cortex (PIVC) and area 3aV] were studied in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) by means of retrograde tracer techniques. Small iontophoretic or pressure injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP), wheat-germ-HRP, Nuclear Yellow, and Fast Blue were administered to the cytoarchitectonic areas Ri (PIVC), 3aV, the parieto-temporal association area T3, the granular insula (Ig), and the rostral part of area 7 (7ant). The injection sites were physiologically characterized by means of microelectrode recordings and vestib

Effect of transverse temporal bone fracture on the fluid compartment of the inner ear.

Five temporal bones exhibiting transverse fractures were studied with a view to determining whether such fractures could lead to symptomatic endolymphatic hydrops. Four out of the five temporal bones showed the fracture line traversing the vestibular aqueduct. Two of these four showed complete obstruction of the endolymphatic duct. One of these had an intact membranous labyrinth and severe endolymphatic hydrops. The other had ruptures of the membranous labyrinth and no hydrops. Three ears exhibited partial preservation of auditory and vestibular hair cells and neurons. These findings are consi

A pilot study on early microgliogenesis following unilateral vestibular neurectomy: A key player in vestibular compensation?

Following unilateral vestibular damage, several behavioral deficits arise, referred to as vestibular syndrome. At the central level the vestibular syndrome is associated with an imbalance in neuronal activity between the two vestibular nuclei (VN). Its recovery is correlated with a rebalancing of the electrophysiological activity between both VN, known as vestibular compensation. Key plasticity mechanisms within the VN involved in this mechanism include, among others, neurogliogenesis, modulation of neuronal excitability and increased histamine release. In this study, we aimed to characterize

Neural substrates, dynamics and thresholds of galvanic vestibular stimulation in the behaving primate.

Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) uses the external application of electrical current to selectively target the vestibular system in humans. Despite its recent popularity for the assessment/treatment of clinical conditions, exactly how this non-invasive tool activates the vestibular system remains an open question. Here we directly investigate single vestibular afferent responses to GVS applied to the mastoid processes of awake-behaving monkeys. Transmastoid GVS produces robust and parallel activation of both canal and otolith afferents. Notably, afferent activation increases with intrinsi

Dicer Deletion in the Ear Can Cut Most Neurons and Their Innervation of Hair Cells to Project to the Ear and the Brainstem.

Dicer is crucial for the generation of microRNAs (miRNAs), which are essential for regulating gene expression and keeping neuronal health. Dicer's conditional deletion cuts all spiral ganglion neurons but spares a small fraction of vestibular ganglion neurons, innervating the utricle and part of the saccule. Hair cells develop in the utricle, saccule, posterior crista, and the cochlea in Pax2Cre; Dicerf/f. Cochlear hair cells develop at the base and expand the OHC and IHC in the middle, or split into a base/middle and the apex. In contrast, Foxg1Cre; Dicerf/f cuts all canal cristae and cochlea

Multiple actions of neurturin correlate with spatiotemporal patterns of Ret expression in developing chick cranial ganglion neurons.

The neurotrophic effects of neurturin (NRTN) on chick cranial ganglia were evaluated at various embryonic stages in vitro and related to its receptor expression. NRTN promoted the outgrowth and survival of ciliary ganglion neurons at early embryonic (E) stages (E6-E12), trigeminal ganglion neurons at midstages (E9-E16), and vestibular ganglion neurons at late stages (E12-E16). NRTN had no positive effects on cochlear ganglion neurons throughout development. In accordance with the time and order of onset in NRTN responsiveness, Ret protein was first detected in ciliary ganglia at E6, subsequent

Vestibular toxicity of cis-2-pentenenitrile in the rat.

cis-2-Pentenenitrile, an intermediate in the synthesis of nylon and other products, causes permanent behavioral deficits in rodents. Other low molecular weight nitriles cause degeneration either of the vestibular sensory hair cells or of selected neuronal populations in the brain. Adult male Long-Evans rats were exposed to cis-2-pentenenitrile (0, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, or 2.0mmol/kg, oral, in corn oil) and assessed for changes in open field activity and rating scores in a test battery for vestibular dysfunction. Surface preparations of the vestibular sensory epithelia were observed for hair cell l

[Secondary tumor of the temporal bone with internal auditory meatus involvement--histopathological study].

Nineteen cases of secondary tumor of the temporal bone with involvement of the internal auditory meatus (IAM) were studied. The cases were classified into 4 invasion modes; direct extension from head and neck tumors (12 cases), hematological dissemination (3 cases), diffuse leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (3 cases), and direct extension of tumors from the intracranium (1 case). There were some differences in the manner in which the tumor had spread among these 4 modes. In most cases involving "direct extension from head and neck tumors", the tumor had invaded the pyramis, and then the Eustachian

[Vestibular neuritis].

Vestibular neuritis is the second most common cause of peripheral vestibular vertigo. Its assumed cause is a reactivation of herpes simplex virus type 1 infection. Methylprednisolone significantly improves the recovery of peripheral vestibular function in patients with vestibular neuritis. Clinical studies suggest that specific vestibular exercises improve vestibulo-spinal and vestibulo-ocular compensation in patients with vestibular neuritis. This review discusses the above and comments etiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic procedures and differential diagnosis.

Differential central projections of vestibular afferents in pigeons.

The question of whether a differential distribution of vestibular afferent information to central nuclear neurons is present in pigeons was studied using neural tracer compounds. Discrete tracing of afferent fibers innervating the individual semicircular canal and otolith organs was produced by sectioning individual branches of the vestibular nerve that innervate the different receptor organs and applying crystals of horseradish peroxidase, or a horseradish peroxidase/cholera toxin mixture, or a biocytin compound for neuronal uptake and transport. Afferent fibers and their terminal distributio

Diagnostic evolution of vestibular neuritis after long-term monitoring.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of vestibular neuritis is based on clinical and laboratory findings after exclusion of other disease. There are occasional discrepancies between clinical impressions and laboratory results. It could be the first vertigo episode caused by other recurrent vestibular disease, other than vestibular neuritis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the clinical features and identify the diagnostic evolution of patients with clinically suspected vestibular neuritis. METHODS: A total of 201 patients clinically diagnosed with vestibular neuritis were included in this study

The origin of centrifugal fibers to the inner ear in Caiman crocodilus. A horseradish peroxidase study.

The origin of acoustic and vestibular efferent fibers was investigated in Caiman crocodilus. After injection of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into the cochlear duct or into the ampullae of the horizontal and anterior semi-circular canals, cells in the medulla oblongata exhibited retrogradely transported HRP reaction product. Efferent vestibular fibers were found in the medial reticular nucleus, at the level of the oliva superior. There were more labeled neurons ipsilateral to the injection site. Efferent acoustic neurons were found close to or inside the rostroventral division of the oliva supe

Cellular Processes Induced by HSV-1 Infections in Vestibular Neuritis.

Herpesvirus is a prevalent pathogen that primarily infects human epithelial cells and has the ability to reside in neurons. In the field of otolaryngology, herpesvirus infection primarily leads to hearing loss and vestibular neuritis and is considered the primary hypothesis regarding the pathogenesis of vestibular neuritis. In this review, we provide a summary of the effects of the herpes virus on cellular processes in both host cells and immune cells, with a focus on HSV-1 as illustrative examples.
