There are both theoretical reasons and empirical findings to suggest that military veterans with PTSD are at greater risk for more physical health problems, poorer health status, and more medical service usage. Much more research is needed on this matter. 8. Despite the potential adverse impact of war-zone exposure on mental and physical h …

Strongyloidiasis in US veterans of the Vietnam and other wars.

The prevalence of strongyloidiasis among American veterans of the Vietnam and other wars was evaluated by testing several groups of veterans for serum IgG antibodies against Strongyloides stercoralis antigens, using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Of 493 Vietnam veterans, eight (1.6%) were seropositive. Of 60 patients with abdominal symptoms and/or elevated eosinophilia (greater than 0.08 [greater than 8%]) admitted to the Cincinnati Veterans Administration Medical Center, 12 (5%) were seropositive. Of 147 residents of a Veterans Administration-operated nursing home, six (4%) were seropo…

Quality control for cardiac surgery in the Veterans Administration.

The volume of cardiac surgical procedures and the 30-day mortality associated with them were reviewed for the total experience of 72 Veterans Administration medical centers over a 10-year period (1975 to 1984). The total number of cardiopulmonary bypass operations increased from 3,074 in 1975 to 6,455 in 1984, whereas operative mortality declined from 8.3 to 4.7%. Operative mortality associated with isolated valve replacement operations declined from 10.9 to 5.9%. Aortocoronary vein bypass operations, which increased in number from 1,679 to 4,988 over the 10-year period, were associated with a…

Fatal disseminated strongyloidiasis in a Vietnam War veteran.

Disseminated Strongyloides stercoralis infection was the cause of death in a young immunosuppressed Vietnam War veteran. Large numbers of Americans were exposed to this potentially lethal parasite during the Southeast Asian war. Because of its characteristic autoinfectious cycle, many veterans could unknowingly harbor the parasite. As the age of this veteran population increases and more patients receive immunosuppressive therapies, greater awareness and better diagnostic methods are needed to detect and treat strongyloidiasis before immunosuppressive regimens are instituted. The risk factors …

Somatization disorder (Briquet's syndrome) in a male veteran.

The authors present here a case of somatization disorder in a heterosexual male veteran. The age at onset of 7 years is the earliest yet reported in a male. Extensive medical records provide a unique opportunity to follow the course of a relatively severe case of this condition and demonstrate that it fulfills the most rigorous diagnostic criteria that have been formulated. Yet, the case of Orville N is more than a lengthy list of medically unexplained symptoms, showing as it does a number of other features traditionally associated with the broad category of hysterical psychopathology.

Association Between Disability Rating and Dental Care Utilization for Low-Income Veterans Ineligible for U.S. Veterans Affairs Dental Benefits: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Poor oral health among U.S. veterans remains a significant public health issue. Compared with non-veterans, veterans experience higher rates of oral disease and unmet dental care needs, contributing to substantial oral health disparities. Most U.S. veterans are ineligible for dental care through the Veterans Affairs (VA) dental care system because of the requirement for a 100% service-connected disability rating. This pilot study evaluated the association between veterans' disability rating and dental care utilization for low-income veterans with disability ratings below 100% who…

Subjective cognitive decline prevalence, impacts, and discussions with healthcare professionals among middle-aged and older women veterans and non-veterans, 2021-2022.

OBJECTIVES: Veterans may be at higher risk of cognitive decline due to military-related risk factors (e.g. traumatic brain injury). We compared the prevalence and impacts of subjective cognitive decline (SCD) among veteran and non-veteran women. METHOD: Using data from the 2021-2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Cognitive Decline module in 29 jurisdictions, women ≥45 years reporting increased memory problems or confusion over the past year were classified as having SCD. We calculated weighted estimates among 1,905 women veterans (n = 268 with SCD) and 66,880 women non-veterans (n…

Causes of death among veterans with alcohol use disorder-related conditions: A 5-year follow-up study of Veterans Health Administration hospitalizations.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder-related (AUD) diagnoses are common among hospitalized Veterans. Our prior research found that the presence of any AUD-related diagnosis during hospital admission is associated with a 30% 5-year mortality rate. OBJECTIVE: To compare demographics and causes of death between hospitalized patients within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) with and without AUD-related diagnoses. METHODS: Cohort study of two populations of Veterans with and without AUD-related conditions admitted to VHA hospitals from October 2015 to September 2020. National Death Index (NDI)…

Promising Patient-Engagement Practices Used by National Research Networks at the US Veterans Health Administration: Perspectives of Veterans, Staff, and Research Leaders.

INTRODUCTION: Active involvement of patients is an essential feature of learning health systems and patient-centered research. Research networks and healthcare organizations lack guidance on best practices for developing and sustaining patient engagement infrastructure. We sought to examine perspectives on promising Veteran-engagement infrastructure and practices used by US Veterans Affairs (VA) research networks. METHODS: We solicited expert opinion from three separate panels of Veterans, VA engagement staff, and VA research leaders using a modified Delphi process comprising two rounds of on…

PTSD Symptoms change in response to a brief intensive trauma-focused treatment programme in non-veterans and veterans with war-related PTSD.

Background: Evidence suggests that veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are less likely to benefit from trauma-focused treatment than are patients with PTSD who have not been exposed to war-related trauma. However, new developments in PTSD treatment that combine several evidence-based trauma-focused therapies within a short time frame may help veterans achieve outcomes similar to those of non-veterans.Objective: In this retrospective cohort study, we examined changes in PTSD symptoms and diagnostic status after treatment between veterans and non-veterans. The treatment consisted…

Respiratory Health Associated With Systemic Metal Exposure in Post-9/11 Veterans in the Department of Veterans Affairs Toxic Embedded Fragment Registry.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse respiratory outcomes in post-9/11 veterans with elevated urinary metal measures and enrolled in the VA's Toxic Embedded Fragment registry were compared to those without elevated urinary metals. METHODS: Veterans completed questionnaires, underwent pulmonary physiology tests (pulmonary function and oscillometry), and provided urine samples for analysis of 13 metals. Respiratory symptoms, diagnoses, and physiology measures were compared in veterans with ≥1 urine metal elevation to those without metal elevations, adjusted for covariates, including smoking. RESULTS: Among 402 …

Identifying significant correlates of purpose in life in older US military veterans: results from the national health and resilience in veterans study.

OBJECTIVE: Perceived purpose in life (PIL) has been linked to a broad range of adverse physical, mental, and cognitive outcomes. However, limited research has examined factors associated with PIL that can be targeted in prevention and treatment efforts in aging populations at heightened risk of adverse outcomes. Using data from predominantly older US veterans, we sought to identify important correlates of PIL. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were analyzed from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, which surveyed a nationally representative sample of 4069 US military ve…

Well-being of Canadian Armed Forces Veterans and Spouses of Veterans During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Protocol for a Prospective Longitudinal Survey.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in significant changes to everyday life, including social distancing mandates, changes to health care, and a heightened risk of infection. Previous research has shown that Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) veterans are at higher risk of developing mental and physical health conditions. Veterans and their families may face unique social challenges that can compound with pandemic-related disruptions to negatively impact well-being. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to longitudinally characterize the mental health of CAF veterans and spouses of CAF veterans thro…

Gender Differences in Connecting Veterans to Care Through the Veterans Crisis Line: A Mixed Methods Evaluation of Referrals to Suicide Prevention Coordinators.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a major public health crisis within the US military veteran community, with distinct gender differences in suicide risk and behavior. The Veterans Crisis Line (VCL) is a component of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) suicide prevention program; through VCL, veterans may be referred to a VHA Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC) to arrange follow-up care. Research shows that engagement with an SPC is a strong protective factor in reducing veteran suicide risk. METHODS: We evaluated SPC referral acceptance and assessed correlates of SPC referral decline using VCL ad…

Probable alcohol use disorder in the U.S. Veteran population: Results from the 2025-2026 National Health and Resilience in Veterans study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a pervasive public health problem in the United States, and military veterans are at elevated risk. A prior wave of the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study (NHRVS) estimated the prevalence of past-year probable AUD at 10.5 % in 2019-2020. Updated national surveillance data are needed given demographic shifts in the veteran population and evolving drinking patterns in the post-pandemic era. METHODS: Using data from the 2025-2026 NHRVS (N = 2,620), we estimated the weighted prevalence of probable AUD and compared it to that of the prior NHR…

Characterization of Service Members and Veterans with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Participating in the Department of Veterans Affairs Intensive Evaluation and Treatment Programs.

INTRODUCTION: Over 514,000 active duty Service Members (SMs) have sustained traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) since 2000, with mild TBI (mTBI) emerging as the signature injury of recent wars. Although many recover fully, some experience chronic mTBI with persistent symptoms such as headaches, memory issues, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic pain, depression, and cognitive impairment. The 2021 Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)/Department of Defense (DOD) clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) recommend symptom-focused treatment, addressing comorbid conditions, and supporting reintegra…

Traumatic brain injury, environmental exposures, and subjective cognition in post-9/11 veterans enrolled in the VA Million Veteran Program.

Using data from the VA Million Veteran Program (MVP), this study aimed to (1) examine rates of environmental exposures as a function of traumatic brain injury (TBI) history in post-9/11 veterans and (2) examine the independent and interactive effects of TBI and exposures on subjective cognition. Participants included 6707 MVP-enrolled veterans (78 % male; age: M = 44.66, SD = 10.91) who were deployed in support of the Iraq/Afghanistan-era conflicts, completed MVP surveys, and participated in the VA TBI Screening and Evaluation Program (TBI-SEP). Veterans were classified into three groups based…

Abnormal cervical cancer screening results among US Veteran and non-Veteran participants in the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS).

Female Veterans report cervical cancer risk factors at higher rates than non-Veterans. Using data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), we tested whether Veterans with a recent cervical cancer screening test were more likely than non-Veterans to have received an abnormal result. NHIS is a population-based cross-sectional household survey with a stratified, multistage sampling design. We pooled screening data from 2010, 2015, and 2018, and restricted the sample to female participants without a hysterectomy who had a cervical cancer screening test in the prior 3 years. The primary ou…
