We have tested the suitability of chromaffin-like carotid body glomus cells for dopamine cell replacement in Parkinsonian rats. Intrastriatal grafting of cell aggregates resulted in almost optimal abolishment of motor asymmetries and deficits of sensorimotor orientation. In rodents, the barrel cortex is a specialized area within the somatosensory cortex that processes signals from the mystacial whiskers. We investigated the normal development of myelination in the barrel cortex of mice, as well as the effects of sensory deprivation on this pattern. Deprivation was achieved by trimming the whiskers on one side of the face every other day from birth. Insufficient recovery after peripheral nerve injury has been attributed to (i) poor pathfinding of regrowing axons, (ii) excessive collateral axonal branching at the lesion site and (iii) polyneuronal innervation of the neuromuscular junctions (NMJ). A study was made of the effects of facial nerve transection on trigeminal stimulation- evoked field potentials in the principal trigeminal (Pr5) and facial nuclei (7) in rats. Although the transected branch of the facial nerve contains pure motoric efferents, it resulted in enhanced responses in both Pr5 and 7. These electrophysiological results suggest a functional circuitry involving the whiskers, trigeminal nerve, Pr5 and 7 and the facial nerve as efferent. The disconnection (opening) of this loop results in enhanced responsiveness of the neurons in both Pr5 and 7.
