Echis ocellatus is one of the commonest snakes responsible for envenomation in Nigeria. Antivenom is the only effective treatment, but the country suffers from a limited supply of effective antivenom. This study therefore aimed to explore the feasibility of effective, mono-specific antibodies production through immunization in rabbits using the venom of Echis ocellatus from Nigeria. The World Health Organization guide on antivenom production was employed in the immunization and the resultant antibodies were purified using protein A agarose column chromatography. Antibody titer reached a high p

This study examined the pathophysiological effects of venoms from neonate and adult specimens of the viperid snake Macrovipera lebetina obtusa, focusing on their ability to activate various blood clotting factors in human plasma. All venoms exhibited strong procoagulant properties. In concentration-response tests, the clotting potency of the neonate venoms fell within the range of their parents' maximum clotting velocities and areas under the curve. Intriguingly, females were more potent than males within each age group, but this requires a larger sample size to confirm. Antivenom neutralizati

This case report describes the death of a 52-year-old male who was bitten by a venomous snake, Vipera berus (common European adder), on his left wrist. Despite experiencing symptoms, the patient refused medical care and self-medicated with alcohol instead. He was later found dead in his residence. Autopsy and histological examination revealed evidence of an anaphylactic reaction in response to the snake bite, with additional findings of alcohol intoxication and other underlying medical conditions.

Secreted phospholipases A2 are snake-venom proteins with many biological activities, notably anti-tumor activity. Phospholipases from the same snake type but different geographical locations have shown similar biochemical and biological activities with minor differences in protein sequences. Thus, the discovery of a new phospholipase A2 with unique characteristics identified in a previously studied venom could suggest the origins of these differences. Here, a new Group II secreted phospholipase A2 (Cc-PLA2-II) from the snake venom of Saudi Cerastes cerastes gasperetti was isolated and characte

Increasing concern about the use of animal models has stimulated the development of in vitro cell culture models for analysis of the biological effects of snake venoms. However, the complexity of animal venoms and the extreme synergy of the venom components during envenomation calls for critical review and analysis. The epithelium is a primary target for injected viper venom's toxic substances, and therefore, is a focus in modern toxinology. We used the Vero epithelial cell line as a model to compare the actions of a crude Macrovipera lebetina obtusa (Levantine viper) venom with the actions of

This short essay pretends to make the reader reflect on the concept of biological mass and on the added value that the determination of this molecular property of a protein brings to the interpretation of evolutionary and translational snake venomics research. Starting from the premise that the amino acid sequence is the most distinctive primary molecular characteristics of any protein, the thesis underlying the first part of this essay is that the isotopic distribution of a protein's molecular mass serves to unambiguously differentiate it from any other of an organism's proteome. In the secon

Snakebite envenoming by viperid species, and by some elapids, is characterized by a complex pattern of tissue damage at the anatomical site of venom injection. In severe cases, tissue destruction may be so extensive as to lead to permanent sequelae, with serious pathophysiological, social and psychological consequences. Significant advances have been performed in the study of venom-induced tissue damage, including identification and characterization of the toxins involved, insights into the mechanisms of action of venoms and toxins, and study of tissue responses to venom-induced injury. Nevert

We evaluate adaptation of eleven species of wild-caught snakes maintained in captivity for venom production using two procedures for estimating survival rates. Kaplan-Meier estimations of survival time provide a better account of subsistence in captivity than estimations based solely on mean time to death. Highland and mid-elevation species are better adapted to our captive settings, but factors such as body condition at admission, locality of origin, seasonality, and maintenance protocol, affect the studied species differently. Periodic estimations of the collection's mortality rates, coupled

S1 family of serine peptidases is the largest family of peptidases. They are specifically inhibited by the Kunitz/BPTI inhibitors. Kunitz domain is characterized by the compact 3D structure with the most important inhibitory loops for the inhibition of S1 peptidases. In the present study we analysed the action of site-specific positive selection and its impact on the structurally and functionally important parts of the snake venom Kunitz/BPTI family of proteins. By using numerous models we demonstrated the presence of large numbers of site-specific positively selected sites that can reach betw

Pit viper snake venom exerts a mildly neurotoxic effect that may rarely lead to neurotoxic complications, such as paralytic strabismus. Extraocular muscles are known to be particularly susceptible to this complication. In previously reported cases, the medial rectus muscle has been the most frequently involved. We report the first case of a pit viper snakebite resulting in comitant exotropia without obvious paralytic features.

A case of Rhinoceros viper (Bitis nasicornis) bite is reported. The bitten hand distended to the wrist, which was tense and painful, with only mild local livid discolouration manifested around the fang mark. Slight hypertension with moderate tachycardia and temporary coagulopathy were observed. The patient received analgesic and intravenous fluids, antibiotics and anti-tetanus therapy. Use of antiserum was not necessary. The bitten person was treated in the main centre for snakebite first aid: in the Toxicological Ward of Erzsébet Hospital of Budapest. We attach importance to the implications

We report the case of a 65-year-old woman who presented with severe neurologic complications after envenomation by a viper snake. A computed tomography (CE) scan revealed multiple brain hemorrhagic infarcts. Conservative treatment in this case proved to be sufficient and repetitive CT scans displayed a complete resolution of the radiologic findings. Possible mechanisms for the cerebral infarctions are discussed. The mechanism of infarctions in this case was believed to be the vasomotor and coagulation disorders caused by the toxins present in the snake's venom and was one of the reasons that l

Between September 1997 and March 1998, a severe skin, eye, and mouth disease was observed in a population of dusky pigmy rattlesnakes (Sistrurus miliarius barbouri), at the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge in Volusia County, Florida (USA). Three affected pigmy rattlesnakes were submitted for necropsy. All snakes had severe necrotizing and predominantly granulomatous dermatitis, stomatitis, and ophthalmitis, with involvement of the subadjacent musculature and other soft tissues. Numerous fungal hyphae were seen throughout tissue sections stained with periodic acid Schiff and Gomori's meth

An 18 year old woman was bitten on the second finger of her right hand by a Cerastes cerastes. A literature search revealed very few clinical cases, and most of those were only laboratory and in 'vitro studies'. Local signs included a hemorrhagic wound at the site of the bite with marked swelling of the entire hand. Twelve hours later, the patient developed coagulopathy, which lasted 3 days and required repeated administration of blood products. Treatment was essentially supportive and the patient was discharged from the hospital after 5 days in good condition.

Snakebite induced acute renal failure continues to occur in many tropical areas of the world. Renal histological lesions other than acute tubular necrosis and acute cortical necrosis as the cause of acute renal failure are rare. Only 3 cases of acute interstitial nephritis in patients with snakebite induced acute renal failure have been previously reported. We report a patient with acute renal failure following viperine snakebite due to acute interstitial nephritis. After a prolonged oliguric phase, there was complete recovery of renal function without institution of steroids. Interstitial nep

During routine milking of a group of Burrowing Asps Atractaspis engaddensis, one of the authors was bitten in the index finger by one fang, as is characteristic of bites by snakes of the genus. Local effects, oedema, erythema and numbness appeared within minutes, followed by systemic effects, including general weakness, sweating, pallor, fluctuations in the level of consciousness, vomiting and watery non-bloody diarrhoea. Gross oedema of the hand developed and extended up to the forearm. Two hours after admission to the hospital, blood pressure rose to 180/110, the ECG showed normal sinus rhyt

Two distinct haemorrhagic proteinases, HTa and HTb, were isolated from the venom of Bitis gabonica by gel filtration and ion-exchange chromatography with native mol. wts of 180,000 and 111,000, respectively. After reduction with dithiothreitol, smaller mol. wts of 77,600 and 69,200 were recorded for HTa and HTb, suggesting that under native conditions the haemorrhagins exist as dimeric molecules. Both toxins possessed caseinolytic and collagenase activity although HTa was 15-36 times more potent than HTb with respect to collagenase activity. No zinc could be detected in the toxins; however, di

We carried out a prospective clinical study from June to December 1993 at the Base Hospital in Avissawella, Sri Lanka to determine the clinical features of envenomation by the hump-nosed viper (Hypnale hypnale). Sixty-two consecutive adult patients (63% males and 37% females, with a median age of 30 years [age range 13-68 years]) admitted to the medical unit following hump-nosed viper bites were surveyed. Most (85.48%) of the patients were bitten on the feet, while 14.52% of the patients were bitten either on the hands or forearms. Most (61.29%) of the patients were bitten during the evening h
