A bobcat (Felis rufus) estimated to be 6-mo old exhibited head pressing, stupor, intermittent seizures, and vocalization. Based on gross and histopathologic features, it was diagnosed to have severe focally extensive protozoal meningoencephalitis. Toxoplasma gondii was confirmed as the etiologic agent by an avidin-biotin immunohistochemical test. This is the first report of clinical toxoplasmosis in a free-ranging bobcat.

Bacillary angiomatosis is an infectious disease of the skin and viscera characterized by vascular lesions, originally described in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection. There are also case reports of bacillary angiomatosis occurring in immunocompetent patients and in noninfected patients with suppressed immune function. We report a case of bacillary angiomatosis in a child undergoing chemotherapy for acute leukemia.

The squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) accommodates Schistosoma haematobium moderately well. Adults occur in the major viscera but the extent of tissue egg deposits and associated pathology is variable. Pathologic involvement of the urogenital system occurs in a large proportion of hosts exposed to moderate to heavy infections, and bladder pathology is indicative of conditions associated with bladder carcinoma.

Complications of a 3-piece inflatable penile prosthesis reservoir are rare, with rupture and fluid leakage being the most common. We recently encountered a patient in whom the reservoir migrated twice into the bowel. A review of the literature suggests that a previous major pelvic or abdominal operation might contribute to erosion of the reservoir into the adjacent viscera.

A 9-month-old female mixed-breed dog weighing 3.25 kg was referred for elective ovariohysterectomy. In order to study the pattern of changes in quality of marinated Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) during cold storage, three aspects of sensory, taste and odor were investigated. Sensory evaluation and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) were measured in viscera and abdomen muscle at 0, 7, 15 and 30 days of storage at 4°C. Forty dogs from the periphery of the city of Rio de Janeiro were studied. All dogs where diagnosed as positive for leishmaniasis either parasitologically and/or serologically. Among them, 19 came from areas where only Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) occurs (Realengo, Bangu, Senador Camará). Parahiatal hernia refers to herniation of abdominal viscera into the chest adjacent to an intact hiatus. Spontaneously occurring parahiatal herniae are extremely rare. We report a 4-year-old boy who presented with intermittent vomiting and had such a hernia, where the herniated stomach had undergone partial volvulus. He was symptom-free after surgical repair.

Elevated serum free fatty acids (FFA) have been implicated previously as the agent causing encephalopathy and fatty degeneration of the viscera (Reye's syndrome). This study documents a decrease in medium and long chain FFA from elevated levels (1.35 mEq/liter) to low levels (0.30 mEq/liter) in a patient successfully treated with exchange transfusions.
