BACKGROUND: New computer-controlled psychophysical procedures allow one to measure some temporal aspects of binocular coordination. The present study investigates whether these procedures can be operated by children and whether the tests are useful to detect previously reported impairments in dynamics and stability of vergence in children with disability in reading and writing.
METHODS: To assess the variability in vergence accuracy (fixation disparity), a stationary fusion stimulus appeared on a computer monitor superimposed by short-term presentations of two dichoptic vertical nonius lines

Retinal degenerative diseases are an extensive group of ocular diseases, leading to vision disorders and finally irreversible vision loss. They are an significant problem, because degenerative processes exist in common ocular disorders like glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration and many other less frequently occurring disorders. In this article, we present mechanisms leading to retinal degeneration like excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation and summarize the latest reports concerning neuroprotection in the treatment of retina degenerative diseases.

BACKGROUND: Ebola virus disease (EVD) survivors are at risk for uveitis during convalescence. Vision loss has been observed following uveitis due to cataracts. Since Ebola virus (EBOV) may persist in the ocular fluid of EVD survivors for an unknown duration, there are questions about the safety and feasibility of vision restorative cataract surgery in EVD survivors.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of EVD survivors anticipating cataract surgery and patients with active uveitis to evaluate EBOV RNA persistence in ocular fluid, as well as vision outcomes post cataract surgery. Pati

Ocular toxocariasis is prevalent among children. The symptoms and signs may mimic other ocular pathologies such as malignancies and other infectious diseases (such as toxoplasmosis and syphilis). We presented a case of progressive blurring of vision in a single eye of a 9-year-old boy. The presence of anti-toxocara antibody in serum samples helps to confirmation the diagnosis in our patient. Despite of treatment, the boy had lost his vision on the affected eye.

Populations in the developed world are ageing and their surgeons are no exception. Accurate vision is essential for the surgeon to operate effectively, yet optimal vision has an expiry date in advancing age. This review examines the effects of ageing on the eye with particular focus on the visual changes of significance to senior surgeons who currently account for 20%-25% of the surgeon workforce. The major age-related diseases of the eye, which include cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, are surmised; together with physiologic ocular changes that ac

The eyes of scallops form images using a concave spherical mirror and contain two separate retinas, one layered on top of the other. Behavioral and electrophysiological studies indicate that the images formed by these eyes have angular resolutions of about 2°. Based on previous ray-tracing models, it has been thought that the more distal of the two retinas lies near the focal point of the mirror and that the proximal retina, positioned closer to the mirror at the back of the eye, receives light that is out-of-focus. Here, we propose three mechanisms through which both retinas may receive focus
