The Effects of Vitamin B in Depression.

Vitamins are dietary components which are necessary for life. They play a major role in health and their deficiency may be linked to symptoms of psychiatric disorders. B vitamins are required for proper functioning of the methylation cycle, monoamine oxidase production, DNA synthesis and the repair and maintenance of phospholipids. Vitamin B deficiency could influence memory function, cognitive impairment and dementia. In particular, vitamins B1, B3, B6, B9 and B12 are essential for neuronal function and deficiencies have been linked to depression. We discuss the causes of depression and the n

Ameliorative capacities of vitamins and monothiols administered alone or in combinations in methylmercury mobilisation in nervous and non-nervous tissues of mice.

The extent of mercury mobilisation was recorded from various tissues (brain, spinal cord, liver and kidney) of male mice administered with a daily dose of methylmercury chloride (1 mg/kg) for seven days. For this purpose 10 groups of animals were intoxicated. Out of these, one group was sacrificed on 8th day and one group was kept without toxicant for another seven days before sacrificing on 15th day. To the rest of the groups were given a daily dose of N-acetyl-DL-homocysteine thiolactone (NAHT), glutathione (GSH), vitamin B Complex and E, applied either alone or in combinations. All these an…

Vitamin B12 supplementation for growth, development, and cognition in children.

RATIONALE: Vitamin B12 deficiency is an important public health problem in children, and has been associated with anaemia and impaired growth, cognition, and development. Vitamin B12 deficiency may develop in children due to lower content in breast milk, low dietary intake, and as requirements increase with age. Vitamin B12 supplementation may confer benefits to child growth and development, due to its role in DNA synthesis and methylation, red blood cell formation, and folate metabolism. However, no systematic reviews have been conducted to examine the effects of vitamin B12 supplementation i

A physiological dose of oral vitamin B-12 improves hematological, biochemical-metabolic indices and peripheral nerve function in B-12 deficient Indian adolescent women.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B-12 deficiency is often considered synonymous with pernicious anemia, a rare condition in which severe malabsorption of the vitamin requires high-dose parenteral treatment. In developing countries such as India, inadequate dietary intake of B-12 due to socio-cultural factors leads to widely prevalent asymptomatic low B-12 status. In this scenario, lower doses of oral B-12 may be effective, safer and more affordable. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of oral B-12 treatment at physiological doses on hematological and biochemical indices and peripheral nerve function in B-12

Unusual association of Arnold-Chiari malformation and vitamin B12 deficiency.

Arnold-Chiari malformations are a group of congenital or acquired defects associated with the displacement of cerebellar tonsils into the spinal canal. First described by Chiari (1891), this has various grades of severity and involves various parts of neuraxis, for example, cerebellum and its outputs, neuro-otological system, lower cranial nerves, spinal sensory and motor pathways. The symptomatology of Arnold-Chiari malformations may mimic multiple sclerosis, primary headache syndromes, spinal tumours and benign intracranial hypertension. We highlighted a case of Chiari type I malformation, w

Vitamin B₆ supplementation in pregnant women with nausea and vomiting.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether supplementation with vitamin B(6) improves nausea and/or vomiting in pregnancy. METHODS: This experimental study was conducted with 60 pregnant women experiencing nausea and/or vomiting prior to the 12th gestational week. Of these women, 30 were treated daily with 10mg and the remaining 30 with 1.28 mg of pyridoxine hydrochloride for 2 weeks. The primary outcome was the Pregnancy-Unique Quantification of Emesis and Nausea (PUQE) score in each group at the end of treatment. RESULTS: The women experiencing nausea and/or vomiting in pregnancy had significantly lo

Effect of B-vitamin therapy on progression of diabetic nephropathy: a randomized controlled trial.

CONTEXT: Hyperhomocysteinemia is frequently observed in patients with diabetic nephropathy. B-vitamin therapy (folic acid, vitamin B(6), and vitamin B(12)) has been shown to lower the plasma concentration of homocysteine. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether B-vitamin therapy can slow progression of diabetic nephropathy and prevent vascular complications. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Diabetic Intervention with Vitamins to Improve Nephropathy [DIVINe]) at 5 university medical centers in Canada conducted between May 2001 and J

Homocysteine, vitamin B12, folate and cognitive functions: a systematic and critical review of the literature.

Elevated serum homocysteine, decreased folate and low vitamin B(12) serum levels are associated with poor cognitive function, cognitive decline and dementia. Despite evidence of an epidemiological association, randomised controlled trials did not provide any clear evidence so far that supplementation with vitamin B(12) and/or folate improves dementia or slows cognitive decline, even though it might normalise homocysteine levels. In this report, we review the current knowledge on the relationship between homocysteine, folate and vitamin B(12) levels and the way their disruption influences cogni

Is Serum Methylmalonic Acid a Reliable Biomarker of Vitamin B12 Status in Children with Short Bowel Syndrome: A Case Series.

We describe 3 patients with short bowel syndrome who had persistently elevated serum methylmalonic acid (MMA) levels while being treated for vitamin B12 deficiency. Following treatment for presumed small bowel bacterial overgrowth, MMA levels normalized. Among patients with short bowel syndrome, MMA levels may have limited specificity for vitamin B12 deficiency.

Intact recovery from early 'acquired methylmalonic aciduria' secondary to maternal atrophic gastritis.

AIM: A 6-month-old infant with severe hyporegenerative anaemia, muscular hypotonia and developmental delay is reported, and the metabolic, diagnostic and therapeutic implications of this case are discussed. RESULTS: Diagnostic work-up disclosed vitamin B12 depletion with an elevated excretion of methylmalonic acid (MMA), but a normal plasma total homocysteine. MRI showed fronto-temporal atrophy and a delay in myelinization. The boy's disease was attributable to a maternal atrophic gastritis. After initiation of vitamin B12 supplementation, he quickly recovered regarding haematopoiesis and MMA

A role for B₁₂ in inflammatory bowel disease patients with suppurative dermatoses? An experience with high dose vitamin B₁₂ therapy.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory dermatoses in conjunction with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) comprise a diverse range of disorders. Some but not all of these respond to conventional treatments for the underlying IBD, such as immunomodulating or antibiotic treatments. We describe our experience with high dose vitamin B₁₂, where conventional therapies have failed. CASE REPORTS: The first case had pouchitis complicated by perianal abscesses and a recto-vaginal fistula. The second case had biopsy proven hidradenitis suppurativa affecting the perianal, inguinal and pubic skin. High dose vitamin B₁₂ ap

Vitamin B6 deficiency and anemia in pregnancy.

Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia in pregnancy. Pregnant women with anemia are, in general, exclusively treated with iron supplementation. We observed that several pregnant women with anemia who were nonresponsive to iron supplementation also had vitamin B6 deficiency, and that anemia in these cases improved with the administration of vitamin B6. Our prospective study in healthy pregnant women showed that blood levels of iron, ferritin and vitamin B6, in particular, fell to the lower limit of the nonpregnant reference range by the third trimester. We conclude that it is import

Nutrition and vitamins in alcoholism.

Chronic alcoholics frequently have evidence of nutritional deficiency due to decreased intake, reduced uptake and impaired utilisation of nutrients. The alcoholic has increased nutrient requirements due to greater metabolic demands and the need for tissue repair. Chronic alcohol-related brain damage can often be a direct result of nutrient depletion, particularly of the vitamins thiamine, B12, nicotinamide and pyridoxine. Lesser degrees of brain damage are frequently unrecognised, and by the time a vitamin deficiency syndrome has developed and been diagnosed, irreversible damage has often occu

New copper(II) and oxidovanadium(IV) complexes with a vitamin B6 Schiff base: mechanism of action and synergy studies on 2D and 3D human osteosarcoma cell models.

We report the synthesis, characterization and anticancer activity of a new Schiff base (H2L) derived from the condensation of pyridoxamine with pyridoxal and its novel copper(II) and oxidovanadium(IV) complexes: [Cu(HL)Cl] (1), [Cu(LH2)(phen)]Cl2 (2), [Cu(LH2)(amphen)]Cl2 (3), [VIVO(HL)Cl] (4), and [VIVO(LH2)(phen)]Cl2 (5), where phen is 1,10-phenanthroline and amphen is its 5-amino derivative. All compounds were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques, namely FTIR, UV-vis and EPR spectroscopy. Their stability in aqueous media was evaluated, revealing that the presence of the
