Oxygen-induced retinopathy in the rat. Vitamins C and E as potential therapies.

Oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) was produced by subjecting newborn albino rats to a 60% oxygen atmosphere for 14 days before they were killed and retinal analysis was done. The extent of OIR was measured by estimating the severity of retinal vasoobliteration in ink-perfused flat-mounted retinas. This was done with the aid of a digitizing camera and an image-analysis system designed to create binary images of the retinal blood vessels. Retinal levels of several antioxidant molecules also were measured. Alpha-tocopherol and ascorbic acid were reduced in oxygen-exposed rats by 34% and 20%, respe

[Comparative antirachitic activity of vitamins D2 and D3 in the body of chicks].

In the four-week study the antirachitic action of vitamin D2 in different does (5000, 7500, 10 000 I. U. per kg food) and of vitamin D3 in a … of vitamin D3 was 15 times higher than that of vitamin D2. In the three-day study of the effect of vitamins D2 and D3 on the synthesis of Ca-binding protein it was found that they exerted a similar effect when the dose of vitamin D2 was 14.5 times higher than that of vitamin D3.

Routine administration of iron and vitamins during pregnancy: review of controlled clinical trials.

The purpose of this review was to determine whether routine administration of iron and vitamins during pregnancy had beneficial effects on birth weight, length of gestation, infant morbidity and mortality, and maternal morbidity and mortality. We searched for controlled clinical trials done in developed Western countries and reported in English, German, Finnish, and Scandinavian languages. Seventeen trials were found. In one trial, women who received vitamin B6 developed less dental caries. In another trial women receiving several different minerals and vitamins ahd fewer deliveries before the…

Vitamin D: Vitamin or Hormone?

Vitamin D can be obtained from diet, direct sunlight, or supplementation. The most common form is synthesized in the skin after exposure to ultraviolet B radiation. Nevertheless, the thought is that vitamin D is more of a multifunctional hormone or prohormone. This is because vitamin D plays contributes to many processes in the body. Calcitriol has been shown to have enhancing effects on the immune system, the cardiovascular system, the endocrine system, and other metabolic pathways. There is evidence that vitamin D has also a role in depression, pain, and cancer.

[Vitamin A and vitamin E in dermatology].

Vitamin A is necessary to maintain the integrity and the differentiation of epithelia of the skin and adnexa. Evident deficiency of vitamin A in chronic diseases, malabsorption and liver affections may result in skin xerosis, follicular keratosis, and metaplasia of mucous membranes. The remarkable toxicity of vitamin A in high doses does not recommend its usage in dermatology. On the contrary the employ of retinoids, synthetic derivatives of vitamin A, brings to excellent results. These vitamin A compounds are much more effective, even if they show important side-effects. Etretinate and isotre

Vitamin D: The "sunshine" vitamin.

Vitamin D insufficiency affects almost 50% of the population worldwide. An estimated 1 billion people worldwide, across all ethnicities and age groups, have a vitamin D deficiency (VDD). This pandemic of hypovitaminosis D can mainly be attributed to lifestyle (for example, reduced outdoor activities) and environmental (for example, air pollution) factors that reduce exposure to sunlight, which is required for ultraviolet-B (UVB)-induced vitamin D production in the skin. High prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency is a particularly important public health issue because hypovitaminosis D is an in

Clinical Features of Hypo- and Hypervitaminosis of Fat-Soluble Vitamins in Pediatric Patients.

Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) are crucial for pediatric health, contributing to normal cellular function, growth, immune defense, and development. Unlike water-soluble vitamins, they are absorbed with dietary fats and stored in the liver and adipose tissue, leading to risks of deficiency (hypovitaminosis) and toxicity (hypervitaminosis) in certain physiological and pathological conditions. This narrative review aimed to summarize the clinical manifestations, diagnostic considerations, and management of hypo- and hypervitaminosis of fat-soluble vitamins in pediatric populations. A compr…

Micronutrients in Cardiovascular Disease: A Comprehensive Review of Vitamins, Trace Minerals, and Electrolytes.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of global mortality, accounting for approximately 17.3 million deaths annually. The antioxidant effects of certain micronutrients may play a role in CVD prevention. This systematic review critically evaluates the evidence on antioxidant vitamins (C, E, carotenoids), B-complex vitamins, vitamin D, trace minerals (iron, copper, zinc, selenium), and electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium) in cardiovascular health. This scoping review with narrative synthesis was informed by PRISMA principles. PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Google…

Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices for antioxidant vitamins C and E in foods.

In this study, we developed microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) for the determination of antioxidant vitamins. The proposed μPADs utilize the reduction of metal ions by hydrophilic and hydrophobic antioxidant vitamins, which is followed by colorimetric reactions with chelating reagents. Hydrophilic vitamin C reduces Fe(III) to Fe(II) and forms a stable Fe(II)-bathophenanthroline complex in an aqueous solution. By contrast, this complex is unstable in organic solvents, and hydrophobic vitamin E requires Fe(III) and bathophenanthroline to be replaced with Cu(II) and bathocuproine…

From the different pathogenesis of epileptogenesis: vitamins as an adjunctive treatment for epilepsy.

Vitamins play an essential role in the maintenance of normal physiological functions of the human body. In recent years, the use of vitamins as an adjunctive treatment for epilepsy has attracted increasing interest academically. There is a substantial body of evidence indicating that vitamin supplementation could contribute to the treatment and prevention of epilepsy. This review  discusses the pathogenesis of epilepsy associated with ten vitamins from five perspectives, namely,  inflammatory signaling pathways, excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, neuroprotection, and the blood-brain barrier, an…

[Impact of therapeutic education on adherence in patients treated with anti-vitamins K].

INTRODUCTION: Therapeutic education of the patient (TPE) treated with AVK has improved the safety and efficiency of this treatment by establishing a new doctor-patient relationship. The objective of our study was to assess the impact of a TPE program on adherence in patients treated with AVK. METHODS: We conducted a prospective interventional study between January and September 2020, including two groups of patients hospitalized for a first thromboembolic: a G1 group with conventional service support and a G2 group with an ETP program created during this work. Each patient was assessed after
