What about the art? Interpreting creative outputs in arts-based youth mental health research: the RESPOND framework.

BACKGROUND: Arts based research practices (ABRPs) are increasingly used to support children and young people (CYP) experiencing complex mental health challenges. Yet the artistic outputs generated within such research are rarely analysed, potentially limiting understanding of how creative artefacts can contribute to meaning making and programme evaluation. This study, part of the UKRI-funded CREATE project, addresses this methodological gap by examining how CYP, researchers and arts practitioners approach the interpretation of youth produced art within mental health research. METHODS: An init

Management of vagus nerve injury afer carotid endarterectomy.

BACKGROUND: Inadvertent injury to the vagus nerve or its branches during carotid endarterectomy can result in adductor vocal cord paralysis (hoarseness) and cricopharyngeal dysfunction (dysphagia) with aspiration, known as "double trouble." This study describes our experience in the management of this complication in cases where conservative treatment failed. METHODS: All patients were examined by a vascular surgeon, a head and neck surgeon, and a speech therapist. Their examinations included comprehensive speech evaluation, video stroboscopy, video fluoroscopy, and methylene blue testing for

Preferred insertion gain of hearing aids in listening and reading-aloud situations.

Nine hearing-impaired subjects with primarily high-frequency hearing loss (Group A) and 8 hearing-impaired subjects with hearing loss in both the high- and low-frequency regions (Group B) participated in the experiment. Subjects wore binaural programmable multimemory hearing aids and selected the preferred amount of insertion gain while they listened to discourse passages read by a male speaker (listen). Subjects also selected the preferred amount of gain while they listened to themselves as they were reading the same passages (read-aloud). Subjects' word-recognition performances and their sub

Voice-Based Conversational Agents for the Prevention and Management of Chronic and Mental Health Conditions: Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Chronic and mental health conditions are increasingly prevalent worldwide. As devices in our everyday lives offer more and more voice-based self-service, voice-based conversational agents (VCAs) have the potential to support the prevention and management of these conditions in a scalable manner. However, evidence on VCAs dedicated to the prevention and management of chronic and mental health conditions is unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study provides a better understanding of the current methods used in the evaluation of health interventions for the prevention and management of chronic

Recognising and responding to clinical deterioration in acute hospitals. Recording patient-reported wellness after Martha's rule.

BACKGROUND: Early recognition of clinical deterioration is central to patient safety, yet preventable harm still occurs. UK policy emphasizes listening to patients and systematically capturing patient-reported wellness. AIMS: The aim of this study was to understand current practice for including patient and family voices in recognising and responding to deterioration, and to assess the feasibility of a structured approach to including patient-reported wellness as part of routine clinical monitoring. METHODS: A mixed-methods feasibility study of a structured approach to capturing patient asse

Methodologies of Care: A Multimodal, Participatory Research Approach with Vulnerable Families Among South African Communities.

Multimodal methods provide valuable opportunities within Participatory Action Research (PAR), to foster meaningful participation, and amplify marginalized voices. However, conventional research approaches have not always adequately captured the complex realities of the lived experiences of families, and multimodal techniques have remained underutilized for the exploration of such experiences. This study aimed to explore the use of creative multimodal methods, within a PAR framework, grounded in care among vulnerable South African families. A qualitative design was adopted, incorporating Human-

Fine social discrimination of siblings in mice: Implications for early detection of Alzheimer's disease.

The ability to distinguish between individuals is crucial for social species and supports behaviors such as reproduction, hierarchy formation, and cooperation. In rodents, social discrimination relies on memory and the recognition of individual-specific cues, known as "individual signatures". While olfactory signals are central, other sensory cues - such as auditory, visual, and tactile inputs - also play a role. However, little research has explored the fine discrimination of individuals with overlapping cues, such as siblings or cohabitating mice. This study investigates whether mice can dis

Collating the voice of people with autoimmune diseases: Methodology for the Third Phase of the COVAD Studies.

INTRODUCTION: The growing recognition of holistic patient care highlights the various factors shaping the quality of life of individuals with autoimmune and rheumatic diseases (AIRDs). Beyond the traditional disease measures, there is an emerging acknowledgment of the less-explored aspects, including subjective well-being, social determinants of health, comorbidities, mental health, and medication adherence. Moreover, digital health services have empowered patients to engage actively in decision-making alongside clinicians. To explore these domains within the context of AIRDs, the "Collating t

Sinus Node Dysfunction Triggered by Tonsillar Abscess: Effects of Vagal Nerve Compression.

BACKGROUND Compression of the vagus nerve by a pharyngeal mass is a well-documented condition that can result in sinus node dysfunction (SND). However, there is scarce literature on extrinsic vagal nerve compression from a tonsillar abscess. CASE REPORT A 59-year-old woman with a history of asthma and chronic throat discomfort presented to the Emergency Department with bradycardia, palpitations, and voice changes. Following a shellfish allergy hospitalization, an otolaryngology evaluation revealed an enlarged right tonsil, recommending tonsillectomy, but scheduling challenges persisted. The pa

Regional Language Speech Recognition from Bone-Conducted Speech Signals through Different Deep Learning Architectures.

Bone-conducted microphone (BCM) senses vibrations from bones in the skull during speech to electrical audio signal. When transmitting speech signals, bone-conduction microphones (BCMs) capture speech signals based on the vibrations of the speaker's skull and have better noise-resistance capabilities than standard air-conduction microphones (ACMs). BCMs have a different frequency response than ACMs because they only capture the low-frequency portion of speech signals. When we replace an ACM with a BCM, we may get satisfactory noise suppression results, but the speech quality and intelligibility

America's First Memorial Honoring Survivors of Sexual Violence.

Over the past two decades, America taken part of a broader global trend of "memorial mania" in which memorials dedicated to remembering injustice have exploded into public space. Memorials that facilitate the centering of marginalized narratives of violence hold significant power for social change. This article focuses on one such space: The Survivors Memorial in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Survivors Memorial opened in October 2020 and is the first public memorial honoring survivors of sexual violence. Despite the progress of the anti-rape and feminist movements as well as a variety of legal i

Diagnosing celiac disease: A critical overview.

The diagnosis of celiac disease (CD) no longer rests on a malabsorptive state or severe mucosal lesions. For the present, diagnosis will always require the gold-standard of a biopsy, interpreted through its progressive phases (Marsh classification). Marsh classification articulated the immunopathological spectrum of gluten-induced mucosal changes in association with the recognition of innate (Marsh I infiltration) and T cell-based adaptive (Marsh II, and the surface re-organisation typifying Marsh III lesions) responses. Through the Marsh classification the diagnostic goalposts were considerab

Are syllabification and resyllabification strategies phonotactically directed in French children with dyslexia? A preliminary report.

PURPOSE: In this study, the authors queried whether French-speaking children with dyslexia were sensitive to consonant sonority and position within syllable boundaries to influence a phonological syllable-based segmentation in silent reading. METHOD: Participants included 15 French-speaking children with dyslexia, compared with 30 chronological age-matched and reading level-matched controls. Children were tested with an audiovisual recognition task. A target pseudoword (TOLPUDE) was simultaneously presented visually and auditorily and then was compared with a printed test pseudoword that eith
