Emissions of five volatile organic sulfur compounds (VOSCs), including methanethiol, carbonyl sulfide, dimethyl sulfide, carbon disulfide, and dimethyl disulfide, from a heavily polluted river, Shijing River in Guangzhou of South China, was studied. The results showed that the amounts of all VOSCs emitted from the river increased from downstream to upstream along the river with increasing magnitude of water pollution. The emission of carbonyl sulfide was the highest among the target analytes, ranging from 23.8 microg m(-2) h(-1) to 42.6 microg m(-2) h(-1) at the water surface of Shijin River.

Air pollution standards and control strategies are based on ambient measurements. For many outdoor air pollutants, individuals are closer to their sources (especially traffic) and there are important indoor sources influencing the relationship between ambient and personal exposures. This paper examines the relationship between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) measured at central site monitoring stations and personal exposures in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area. Over a 1-year period, personal exposures to 34 VOCs were measured for 90 volunteers from 30 families living close to one of five ce…

The relative sensitivity of rats and humans to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as toluene (TOL) and perchloroethylene (PERC) is unknown and adds to uncertainty in assessing risks for human exposures to VOCs. Recent studies have suggested that ion channels, including nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), are targets of TOL effects. However, studies comparing TOL effects on human and rat ligand-gated ion channels have not been conducted. To examine potential toxicodynamic differences between these species, the sensitivity of human and rat nAChRs to TOL was assessed. Since PERC has s…

To date, personal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exposure and residential indoor and outdoor VOCs levels have not been characterized in Korea. In this study, residential indoor and outdoor VOCs concentrations were measured and compared simultaneously with the personal exposure for each of 30 participants in a medium city, Asan, and in a metropolitan city, Seoul. Factors that influence personal VOCs exposures were assessed in relation to house characteristics and time activity information. All VOC concentrations were measured using passive samplers during a 24-h period and analyzed using GC-…

An automated analyser of volatile chloro-organic compounds in water was constructed and tested using standard mixtures of dichloromethane and dichloroethane. It was based on continuous, countercurrent gas stripping of the liquid sample followed by periodic trapping of the analytes on two traps alternately connected to the bubbler outlet, and thermal desorption. When one trap performed adsorption, the other underwent desorption and cooling. Analytes were detected by an ECD detector. Integration, calibration, calculations and overall operating cycle control was performed by a microcomputer. The

AIM: Originally developed as glucose-lowering agents for type 2 diabetes, sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have recently attracted attention for their kidney-protective effects in patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD). However, their underlying metabolic mechanisms remain unclear. We, therefore, hypothesized that non-invasive urinary metabolite profiling could provide novel mechanistic insights.
METHODS: We comprehensively analysed urinary volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in patients with DKD using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A total of 61 patients were enrol…

Botrytis cinerea Pers., the causal agent of grey mould, causes major economic losses in viticulture by reducing grape and wine quality and yield. Antagonistic yeasts that release bioactive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) represent a sustainable alternative to synthetic fungicides. Here, VOCs produced by Pichia guilliermondii strain ZIM624 were identified and assessed for antifungal activity against B. cinerea. 65 VOCs-including higher alcohols, volatile phenols, esters, and terpenes-were detected using two newly developed and validated analytical methods combining automated headspace solid-p…

This study applies a green method combining sodium phytate and sodium hydroxide to prepare hierarchical porous biochar from shell-based biomass waste (e.g., pomelo peel, mandarin orange peel, orange peel, rice husk, and peanut shell). The resulting biochars have specific surface areas exceeding 2300 m2 g-1, with saturated adsorption capacities for chlorobenzene greater than 530 mg g-1. The pomelo peel-derived biochar exhibited an exceptionally high chlorobenzene adsorption capacity of 572.5 mg g-1. This outstanding performance is related to its high specific surface area (2331.19 m2 g-1), larg

Indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) require treatment technologies that remain effective at low concentrations and high airflow rates without generating persistent secondary waste. This structured narrative review evaluates VOC removal by microalgae and algal-bacterial consortia using an evidence hierarchy that distinguishes direct gas-phase studies, gas-liquid reactor studies, and aqueous mechanistic studies. Formaldehyde and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) are identified as the principal indoor VOC targets, whereas studies on phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons,…

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are common sources of occupational exposure throughout a variety of industries. To protect personnel from overexposure, field industrial hygienists must conduct compliance sampling. In efforts to improve upon analytical sensitivity and time-to-knowledge of existing VOC exposure assessment methods, the industrial hygiene research group at UAB has developed a preanalytical technique known as photothermal desorption (PTD), which uses pulses of high-energy light to desorb analytes from thermally conductive, carbonaceous sorbents. To-date, the theoretical and conce…

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate changes in exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in divers exposed to hyperbaric air.
METHODS: A total of 17 adult divers underwent two sessions of hyperbaric air exposure at 30 m (400 kPa), separated by a one-week interval. In the first exposure, the divers were decompressed with hyperbaric air alone; in the second exposure, they breathed 100% oxygen for 30 min when decompressed to 18 m. The composition and concentration of VOCs in exhaled breath were measured before exposure, at the initiation of decompression, and after exposure.
RESULTS: Th…

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are valuable compounds in diverse microbial interactions with certain biotic stimuli, yet pivotal roles of any VOCs derived by the rice blast fungus, Magnaporthe oryzae, in intra- and interspecies communications have been poorly understood. Therefore, in this study, we investigated that how certain VOCs by M. oryzae affect the fungal growth of the same species and other species. Using a partitioned I-plate assays, the result showed that pre-inoculated fungal colony (sender) significantly suppressed the late arriving colony (receiver) in a time- and mediadepend…

Near-infrared (NIR) emitting metal clusters, recognized for their low toxicity, large Stokes shift, and exceptional photostability, hold considerable promise as stimuli-responsive luminescent materials for applications including organic vapor sensing, pollutant detection, and photoluminescent thermometers. However, their limited quantum yield (QY) for NIR emission poses a challenge, highlighting the need for developing light-up sensors with NIR emitting metal clusters to broaden the scope of applications. Herein, the carbazole-alkyne ligand-incorporated novel bimetallic cluster, Cu4Pt2(CZ-PrA)

Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds (BVOCs) are organic chemicals emitted primarily by flora. They impact climate and human health, and their presence is influenced by environmental conditions. Despite the intense effects of climate change, there is lack of information about the spatiotemporal variations in BVOC emissions and underlying driving factors. This study aims to quantify the variation of BVOCs in Germany and attribute it to deriving factors. We first conducted a detailed study covering the period from 1979 to 2024, during which satellite observations were first became available. Then…

In pathology laboratories, several volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are used, such as formaldehyde, ethanol, and xylene. These substances are recognized as genotoxic and cytotoxic, which is why their handling poses risks to human health. The buccal micronucleus (MN) cytome assay is a non-invasive, useful, and simple method to detect these effects in exposed individuals. The aim of the study was to evaluate the risk of genotoxicity and cytotoxicity of VOCs in pathology professionals of S. Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal. The study comprised two groups: exposed workers (n = 21) from the three l…
