Ultrasonographic evaluation of the shoulder in asymptomatic overhead athletes.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of ultrasonography (US) in the examination of soft tissue anatomical structures of the shoulder in overhead athletes. The study evaluated the shoulders of overhead elite premier league athletes involved in basketball, handball, volleyball, body building, and water polo. US examination of both shoulders was performed prospectively in 45 asymptomatic overhead athletes and 43 asymptomatic volunteers matched for age. On US examination, subacromial-subdeltoid bursa effusion was observed in 16 of the dominant shoulders and in 2 of the non-dominant shoulder…

Sport injuries: relations to sex, sport, injured body region.

The present study evaluated the association among sex, sport, and injured body region of sport injuries. The subjects were 329 men and 127 w … est percentage. The most frequently injured body regions were the foot and the ankle in basketball, volleyball, soccer, and running, but in wrestling, the knee. These findings suggest that injury rates are associated with the sport rather than sex of player, and the most frequently injured body regions are the lower extremities. Therefore, the muscles of low …

Impingement of the rotator cuff in athletes caused by instability of the shoulder joint.

An impingement of the rotator cuff can be caused by chronic anterior instability of the shoulder joint. This particular disease is often found in athletes engaged in overhead motion in abduction/external rotation of the arm, such as in ball sports like volleyball or European handball, racket sports like tennis or badminton, or swimming. For those patients that cannot be cured by conservative treatment such as muscular stabilization, surgical treatment is indicated: anterior reconstruction of the capsule and/or the glenoid labrum, and in addition--if necessary--subacromial decompression and rev…

Does a drop landing represent a whole skill landing and is this moderated by fatigue?

This study aimed to determine whether the landing phase of a drop landing (DL) differed with respect to a complete jumping and landing task, a spike jump (SJ), and whether fatigue altered the landing of these movements. Fourteen male volleyball players performed five DL and SJ in a counterbalanced order under two experimental conditions: non-fatigued and fatigued. Fatigue, induced by repetitive jumping sets, was confirmed by decrements in vertical jump height >25% and increased blood lactate >6 mmol/L. Each landing task was characterized by the resultant ground reaction forces (GRF), sagittal …

Diagnosis, Management, and Return to Sport of a 16-Year-Old Patient With a Chiari I Malformation: A Case Report and Literature Review.

This case report discusses a 16-year-old female volleyball, basketball, and track and field athlete who was diagnosed with a Chiari I malformation after a concussion. Surgical decompression was recommended and performed 3 months after her initial diagnosis. This patient presented unique challenges due to her age, desire to return to sport, and lack of access to medical care due to living in a rural area. Few evidence-based best-practice recommendations are available for the management and return to sport of patients with Chiari I malformation, particularly for those who have undergone surgical…

Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis: A Rare Case of Anterior Ankle Impingement.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior ankle impingement is characterized by a painful range of motion (ROM)limitation of tibiotarsal joint. More than 70% of cases are secondary to trauma or repetitive microtrauma of the anterior aspect of the ankle such as it occurs during ball kicking ("footballer's ankle") or forced plantar flexion (ballet dancers, volleyball players, and runners) in people practicing sport for many years. There are other causes of anterior ankle impingement. We report a case of villonodular synovitis that, also less common, has to be considered in diagnostic flowchart. CASE REPORT: In th…

Common conditions in the overhead athlete.

The overhead athlete is at unique risk for injury because of the mechanics associated with rapid shoulder elevation, abduction, and external rotation. Angulation of the humeral head against the posterosuperior glenoid can cause rotator cuff tendon and labral impingement. The throwing or striking motion of baseball, softball, water polo, tennis, racquetball, and volleyball may result in scapular dyskinesis, partial articular-sided supraspinatus avulsions, and posterosuperior labral tears. The SICK scapula syndrome (scapular malposition, inferior medial border prominence, coracoid pain and malpo…

Temporal posttraumatic limited ocular movement with suspected trapdoor fracture.

Trapdoor fractures, or blowout fractures, result from muscle entrapment after orbital floor fractures. The incarcerated muscles may become necrotic because of ischemia; immediate surgery is recommended for symptomatic persistent diplopia or clinical evidence of entrapment. We report a case of spontaneous resolution of diplopia in a patient with a high suspicion of a trapdoor fracture. A 15-year-old girl presented with diplopia after being hit in the eye while playing volleyball. Computed tomography did not show a fractured orbital bone, but the forced duction test was positive when the left ey…

Addressing muscle-tendon imbalances in adult male athletes with personalized exercise prescription based on tendon strain.

PURPOSE: Imbalances of muscle strength and tendon stiffness can increase the operating strain of tendons and risk of injury. Here, we used a new approach to identify muscle-tendon imbalances and personalize exercise prescription based on tendon strain during maximum voluntary contractions (εmax) to mitigate musculotendinous imbalances in male adult volleyball athletes. METHODS: Four times over a season, we measured knee extensor strength and patellar tendon mechanical properties using dynamometry and ultrasonography. Tendon micromorphology was evaluated through an ultrasound peak spatial freq…
