The Glymphatic System and Waste Clearance with Brain Aging: A Review.

The glymphatic system is a glial-dependent waste clearance pathway in the brain, in place of lymphatic vessels, dedicated to drain away soluble waste proteins and metabolic products. Specifically, the glymphatic network serves as a "front end" for waste clearance, and is connected downstream to an authentic lymphatic network, associated with dura covering the brain as well as cranial nerves and large vessels at the skull exits. The anatomical and functional interconnections between these two networks are not completely understood. Several key physiological processes have been identified that c

Carbon dioxide sequestration of iron ore mining waste under low-reaction condition of a direct mineral carbonation process.

Mining waste that is rich in iron-, calcium- and magnesium-bearing minerals can be a potential feedstock for sequestering CO2 by mineral carbonation. This study highlights the utilization of iron ore mining waste in sequestering CO2 under low-reaction condition of a mineral carbonation process. Alkaline iron mining waste was used as feedstock for aqueous mineral carbonation and was subjected to mineralogical, chemical, and thermal analyses. A carbonation experiment was performed at ambient CO2 pressure, temperature of 80 °C at 1-h exposure time under the influence of pH (8-12) and particle siz

Tandem catalysis enables chlorine-containing waste as chlorination reagents.

Chlorinated compounds are ubiquitous. However, accumulation of chlorine-containing waste has a negative impact on human health and the environment due to the inapplicability of common disposal methods, such as landfill and incineration. Here we report a sustainable approach to valorize chlorine-containing hydrocarbon waste, including solids (chlorinated polymers) and liquids (chlorinated solvents), based on copper and palladium catalysts with a NaNO3 promoter. In the process, waste is oxidized to release the chlorine in the presence of N-directing arenes to afford valuable aryl chlorides, such

From fruit waste to foods via fermentation.

The increasing generation of fruit waste represents a major environmental and economic challenge for the agri-food sector, while also offering significant opportunities for sustainable valorisation within the framework of the circular economy. Fruits rejected for cosmetic reasons, together with processing by-products, are rich sources of dietary fibre, sugars and bioactive compounds that can be converted into value-added products. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of microbial fermentation as a sustainable strategy for fruit waste valorisation, with particular emphasis on th

Contrasting macro- and meso-litter accumulation in managed and unmanaged beach sectors of the northwestern Adriatic Sea.

Beach management practices are widely implemented in coastal environments, yet their association with litter size structure remains poorly understood. We evaluated macro- and meso-litter across vegetated (unmanaged) and non-vegetated (managed) beach areas along the northwestern Adriatic coast (Italy) through seasonal stratified surveys comprising 448 plot-level sampling events across 112 plots. Meso-litter accounted for approximately 84% of all recorded items. Negative binomial generalized linear mixed models revealed a significant interaction between litter size class and area type (p < 0.001

Bioeconomic potential of lignocellulosic by-products: Steam explosion-based fractionation into solid and liquid phases for fiber and methane production.

This study examines lignocellulosic by-products from agriculture and food industry for methane production. Banana peels, cacao bean shells, rice straw, tomato plant residues, and wheat straw underwent steam explosion treatment (SE) at 160 °C and 10 min followed by solid-liquid separation. Specific methane yield increased between 8.6 % to 19.6 % for rice and wheat straw and cacao bean shells after SE treatment, while decreasing for banana peels (14.1 %). The liquid phase demonstrated high specific methane yield potential, with SMY between 227 and 336 LCH4 kgODM-1. Meanwhile, the fiber-rich soli

Consistency of Phenolic Compounds in Plant Residues Parts: A Review of Primary Sources, Key Compounds, and Extraction Trends.

A significant challenge in valorizing food waste is the accurate extraction and identification of metabolites, as the composition of phenolic compounds varies by plant species, part, growth conditions, and processing. This review examined phenolic compounds in plant residue groups (leaves/stalks, peels/husks, pulp/pomace, and seeds) to verify the predominance of specific compounds in the same plant groups, establishing a comprehensive database. This database may be helpful for future studies that seek sources of a given compound or develop solvents to extract phenolic compounds from a specific

Evaluating the performance of the 'Seabin' - A fixed point mechanical litter removal device for sheltered waters.

Mechanical interventions are increasingly suggested as a means of removing plastic litter from aquatic environments; their performance is rarely evaluated, but such information is critical to inform policy interventions such as those required to facilitate UNEA 5.2. The Seabin, a fixed-point device designed to remove floating litter in sheltered waters was examined in an urban tidal marina (Southwest UK). It captured on average 58 litter items/day; chiefly plastic pellets, polystyrene balls and plastic fragments. It also captured one marine organism for every 3.6 items of litter, or 13 organis

Mountain streams flushing litter to the sea - Andean rivers as conduits for plastic pollution.

Rivers polluted by anthropogenic litter are major transport routes of litter from inland to the coastal zone and the ocean. However, litter studies have primarily focused on marine environments, and the litter dynamics in rivers are still poorly understood. Herein, we explored the abundances, composition and sources of litter at the riversides and in surface waters of mountain rivers from continental Chile in two different years. Additionally, we evaluated whether different temporal, geographic, topographic, hydrologic or anthropogenic factors influence the abundances of litter. Anthropogenic

The influence of petroleum products on the methane fermentation process.

In this study the influence of the petroleum products: diesel fuel and spent engine oil on the sewage sludge digestion process and biogas production efficiency was investigated. Microbiological, chemical and enzymatic analyses were applied in the survey. It was revealed that the influence of the petroleum derivatives on the effectiveness of the methane fermentation of sewage sludge depends on the type of the petroleum product. Diesel fuel did not limit the biogas production and the methane concentration in the biogas, while spent engine oil significantly reduced the process efficacy. The chang

Furfural production from xylan using a Pueraria Residues carbon-based solid-acid catalyst.

BACKGROUND: The conversion of biomass into high value-added platform compounds is an important method of biomass utilization. The conversion of hemicellulose represented by xylan into furfural can not only reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, but also promotes the development and utilization of non-edible biomass resources. In this study, a bifunctional solid-acid catalyst prepared from agricultural and forestry waste Pueraria (P. eduli) Residues was used to convert xylan into furfural in a biphasic system. RESULTS: In this study, P. eduli Residues was used as raw material to prepare a P.

Energy effective utilization of circulating fluidized bed fly ash to prepare silicon-aluminum composite aerogel and gypsum.

To reduce the cost of Si-Al aerogels preparation, circulating fluidized bed fly ash (CFA) was developed to be as the alternative to synthetic precursors. High energy consumption of alkali-melting and secondary wastes production were the major challenges. Here, a technique characterized by effective energy consumption and non-secondary waste was developed to convert CFA into Si-Al aerogel. The process consists two stages, preparation of Si-Al sol by sintering of CFA and Na2CO3 followed by sulfuric acid leaching, and synthesis of Si-Al aerogel by so-gel with trimethyl chlorosilane modification a
