Mineralization of the Common Groundwater Pollutant 2,6-Dichlorobenzamide (BAM) and its Metabolite 2,6-Dichlorobenzoic Acid (2,6-DCBA) in Sand Filter Units of Drinking Water Treatment Plants.

The intrinsic capacity to mineralize the groundwater pollutant 2,6-dichlorobenzamide (BAM) and its metabolite 2,6-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,6-DCBA) was evaluated in samples from sand filters (SFs) of drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). Whereas BAM mineralization occurred rarely and only in SFs exposed to BAM, 2,6-DCBA mineralization was common in SFs, including those treating uncontaminated water. Nevertheless, SFs treating BAM contaminated water showed the highest 2,6-DCBA mineralization rates. For comparison, 2,6-DCBA and BAM mineralization were determined in various topsoil samples. As i

Active slag filters: rapid assessment of phosphorus removal efficiency from effluent as a function of retention time.

There is increasing pressure to upgrade effluent ponds for phosphorus removal. Active slag filters offer a solution, but design information is limited. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) is a key factor in filter design because it controls filter treatment efficiency as well the filter substrate lifespan. This paper reports on a rapid method of continual looping of effluent through a filter column to obtain a relationship between HRT and phosphorus removal efficiency. Phosphorus removal declined logarithmically with respect to retention time. While the mechanisms that yield this relationship invol

Indirect potable water reuse to face drought events in Barcelona city. Setting a monitoring procedure to protect aquatic ecosystems and to ensure a safe drinking water supply.

The climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressures are expected to limit the availability of water resources. Hence, active measures must be planned in vulnerable regions to ensure a sustainable water supply and minimize environmental impacts. A pilot test was carried out in the Llobregat River (NE Spain) aiming to provide a useful procedure to cope with severe droughts through indirect water reuse. Reclaimed water was used to restore the minimum flow of the lower Llobregat River, ensuring a suitable water supply downstream for Barcelona. A monitoring was performed to assess chemical an

From source to distribution channel: A baseline study of microplastic occurrence in drinking water in Ogun State, Nigeria.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants known to have contaminated not only surface and groundwater but also drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) and tap water. Little is known about the occurrence of MPs in DWTPs in Africa, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. To address this knowledge gap, this study investigated the prevalence and estimated daily intake of MPs in raw water, DWTPs, and tap water in a semi-urban area in Ogun State, Nigeria. Using Rose Bengal staining and optical microscopy, MPs in water samples were identified and characterised using standard methods. T

Impact of flushing procedures on drinking water biostability and invasion susceptibility in distribution systems.

UNLABELLED: Ensuring high-quality drinking water remains challenging, as complaints about odors, discoloration, or contamination persist. In Belgium and beyond, traditional flushing is a common curative strategy that involves discharging large water volumes through hydrants while the network remains in use. In some cases, free chlorine (0.5 mg/L) is added, and consumers are advised not to drink the water. However, flushing can alter water biostability, potentially increasing susceptibility to microbial invasion. This study used a pilot-scale drinking water distribution system with three identi

Combining industrial and urban water-reuse concepts for increasing the water resources in water-scarce regions.

Water scarcity is a huge challenge for industrial and urban developments. As such developments are based on a secure water supply, strategies to ensure the required water quantities must be put into effect. In this context, sustainability is becoming an increasingly important factor due to the worsening of pollution and climate change. The integrated industrial-urban water-reuse concept (IU-WA-RE) links gray and green infrastructures by providing reuse water for different infrastructural purposes. Municipal and industrial wastewater is treated separately in different water resource recovery fa

The potential role of biochar in the removal of organic and microbial contaminants from potable and reuse water: A review.

In this work, the potential benefits, economics, and challenges of applying biochar in water treatment operations to remove organic and microbial contaminants was reviewed. Minimizing the use of relatively more expensive traditional sorbents in water treatment is a motivating aspect of biochar production, e.g., $246/ton non-activated biochar to $1500/ton activated carbon. Biochar can remove organic contaminants in water, such as some pesticides (0.02-23 mg g(-1)), pharmaceutical and personal care products (0.001-59 mg g(-1)), dyes (2-104 mg g(-1)), humic acid (60 mg g(-1)), perfluorooctane sul

Efficient progesterone removal from water using molybdenum disulfide nanoparticles.

Water contamination by hormone-disrupting chemicals like progesterone (PGS) poses significant risks to environmental and human health. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic study of PGS removal by pure MoS2 nanoparticles, extending previous work on MoS2 for structurally related estrogen, 17β-estradiol [1]. Owing to their two-dimensional structure, high surface area, and good stability in water, MoS2 nanoparticles can achieve higher affinity toward organic molecules like PGS compared to conventional adsorbents such as activated carbon or metal oxides. Under optimized conditions ([MoS2]

Recent Advances on Application of Modified Biochar for the Removal of Pharmaceutical Compounds from Wastewater.

The widespread use of pharmaceutical compounds (PCs) has led to their extensive contamination in aquatic environments. Biochar, a carbon-rich and porous material, offers a promising solution for the remediation of PCs, particularly when modified. Modification methods can be physical (ball milling, steam activation, and CO2 activation) or chemical (acid/alkali treatment, oxidation, surface functionalization, metal impregnation, and nano structuring). These treatments enhance biochar's structural properties including pore size, pore volume, surface area, and surface functionality, thereby increa

Removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and nanoplastics from water using selected nanomaterial-based membranes: A review.

Nanomaterial-based membranes have emerged as promising candidates for advanced water purification because of their unique physicochemical properties and versatile functionalities. MXenes, MOFs, and GO were selected because they represent complementary membrane platforms: MXenes provide hydrophilic and conductive lamellar channels, MOFs offer tunable porosity and adsorption sites, and GO supplies oxygenated functional groups and two-dimensional transport pathways. MXene-based membranes exhibit strong hydrophilicity, tunable surface termination, and high conductivity, which facilitate the remova…

Natural material-modified absorbent for phosphorus removal from waters.

Excessive phosphorus accumulation in reservoirs is a major driver of eutrophication, necessitating sustainable remediation strategies that mitigate the limitations associated with metal-modified adsorbents. We propose a biochar-laterite-bentonite (BLB) composite as a synergistically engineered and low-cost natural adsorption system for phosphorus removal from waters. The scientific contribution of this work lies in demonstrating that effective phosphorus adsorption can be achieved through modification using natural materials, without reliance on rare-earth or heavy metal-modified adsorbents. Waste-Derived Fine-Milled Bone Char for Apparent Cr (VI) Removal From Water and Preliminary Asphalt-Compatible Processing of the Recovered Residue.

Chromium adsorption transfers contamination to a solid residual that still requires management. This proof-of-concept study evaluated fine-milled bone char (BC; D50 = 5.52 μm) for apparent aqueous Cr (VI) removal from acidic synthetic water and examined asphalt-compatible processing of the recovered residue. Contact-time screening showed > 97% apparent Cr (VI) removal within 30 min; 120 min was retained only as a standardized operational contact time because later archived residual concentrations were very low, the assay lacked independent replication, and the sample-equivalent lower calibrati

Enhanced trichloroethylene degradation in groundwater: synergistic activation of persulfate by multivalent iron materials coupled with activated carbon.

This study investigates the synergistic activation of persulfate (PS) by multivalent iron-based materials (ZVI, FeS, and FeS2) in the presence of activated carbon (AC) for the efficient degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE). The incorporation of AC markedly accelerated TCE oxidation by enriching contaminants within its microenvironment and promoting reactive species (ROS) generation. The optimal PS/iron/TCE molar ratios with 0.5 g L-1 AC were 20/10/3 for the PS/ZVI/TCE system and 20/60/3 for both PS/FeS/TCE and PS/FeS2/TCE systems. A perspective on recent advances in polysaccharide/covalent organic framework composite materials with applications potential in water remediation.

Researching the potential of various composite materials to remove water pollutants is an important issue for scientists, and polysaccharides are considered desirable materials in this field. Despite the unique advantages, combining these natural materials with a secondary component, especially porous compounds, could improve the performance of the desired system. Recently, highly porous constructs, such as covalent organic frameworks (COFs), was introduced for the composition of polysaccharides. Also, this combinations can solve the aggregation concern of COFs in water treatment areas. Theref

Biochar-based catalysts: an efficient and sustainable approach for water remediation from organic pollutants via advanced oxidation processes.

Water contamination by hazardous organic chemicals, including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and dyes, is a growing environmental concern due to their persistence, low biodegradability, and toxic effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health, even at trace concentrations. Thus, it is important to remove the organic pollutants before discharge into the environment. Various techniques, including degradation, adsorption, and membrane separation, have been utilized for organic contaminant removal. Among them, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have proven to be highly effective for water treatment

Scalable and sustainable cellulose xerogels for high-capacity enrichment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

The phase-out of long chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has accelerated the adoption of alternative emerging PFAS, posing a dual pollution challenge with persistent long-chain residues and their substitutes unclear fate in water treatment. Herein, we develop a scalable and closed-loop strategy producing aminated cellulose xerogel (CNPK) for PFAS removal.
