Clinical study on cognitive impairment in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Our study aimed to explore the intellectual function of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in China and examine the correlation of full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) with age, mutation locations, mutation class, and dystrophin isoforms. We assessed 64 boys with DMD using The Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children-Fourth Edition and compared intellectual function at enrollment and follow-up in the 15 patients who completed the follow-up. Our findings confirm that boys with DMD may exhibit cognitive impairment, with the Working Memory Index being the most impaired. There was

The uneven landscape of cognitive domains in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: A large consortium study.

BACKGROUND: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is strongly associated with aberrant neurodevelopment, including decreased cognitive functioning and schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs). While the different core domains of IQ have distinct clinical ramifications, their collective profile has not been well-characterized in 22q11DS. Here, in the largest 22q11DS sample to date, we elucidate the overall IQ profile, including Verbal and Performance IQ (VIQ and PIQ), Processing Speed (PS), and Working Memory (WM), including associations with developmental stage and SSDs. METHODS: We included 1,3

Cognitive disturbances in primary blepharospasm.

The common belief that primary dystonia is a purely motor disorder with no anatomical substrate and no other accompanying neurological dysfunction has recently been challenged. In addition, there is increasing evidence that the basal ganglia besides motor control, plays a role in cognitive functioning. However, no systematic cognitive performance evaluation has been carried out in patients with primary blepharospasm (BS), one of the most common forms of adult dystonia. We evaluated a series of 20 patients with primary BS and a group of 17 controls matched by severity of mood symptoms, age, and

The neural correlates of non-spatial working memory in velocardiofacial syndrome (22q11.2 deletion syndrome).

Velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS), also known as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, is a neurogenetic disorder that is associated with both learning disabilities and a consistent neuropsychological phenotype, including deficits in executive function, visuospatial perception, and working memory. Anatomic imaging studies have identified significant volumetric reductions in the parietal lobe of individuals with VCFS, but several studies have reported that the frontal lobe is relatively preserved. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neural correlates of non-spatial working memo

Clinical and neuropsychological characteristics of pediatric epilepsy patients with atypical language dominance.

Studies on intracarotid amobarbital procedures (IAP) in pediatric patients are rare and mainly focus on practicability aspects. Very few studies have reported characteristics of children with atypical language dominance. We compared children with left-sided focal epilepsy and atypical (i.e., right or bilateral) versus left-sided language representation (n=12 versus 17). Our results indicate a higher incidence of left handedness, extratemporal lesions, an earlier onset of epilepsy, and a neuropsychological "crowding effect" with distinct nonverbal memory deficits in the atypical group. We concl

The neuropsychology of trichotillomania.

The pathophysiology of trichotillomania (TM) is not well understood. Overlap with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) has been proposed, although extant data are inconsistent in this regard. In the neuropsychological domain, some data have supported the proposed TM-OCD overlap. However, the available studies are limited in number, and they typically have sampled a restricted range of performance domains. To examine further neuropsychological functioning in TM, the present study compared performance of 21 patients with TM and 17 normal control (NC) participants on a broad battery of tests asses

Diffusion tensor imaging with tractography to predict memory deficits in patient groups with temporal lobe lesions.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and tractography (DTT) are advanced MRI techniques that enhance the evaluation of white matter microstructure and connectivity. However, their ability to predict cognitive outcomes, particularly memory function in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), remains uncertain. This study examined the relationship between tract-specific white matter integrity using DTI/DTT, memory performance, and clinical characteristics in patients with mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS), dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNET), and WHO Grade II gliomas, common etiologies of TL

A randomized EPIREMED protocol study on the long-term visuo spatial effects of very preterm children with a working memory deficit.

BACKGROUND: Very preterm children generally perform poorly in executive functions and particularly in working memory. Adaptive training tasks encouraging these children to work continuously on their personal working memory capacity can be very useful. Above all in preschool-age children, several cognitive training programs focused on improving working memory capacity. Cogmed is a computerized visuospatial cognitive training program that improves working memory in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The main objective is to assess the long-term effects (18 mo

Cognitive profile and inflammatory markers in children and adolescents with specific learning disorder: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Specific learning disorder (SLD) is frequently characterized by weaknesses in working memory and processing speed; however, its biological correlates remain unclear. In this study, we investigate whether inexpensive, blood count-derived inflammation composites and micronutrients are related to cognitive variation in SLD. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, participants in the SLD group underwent Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition assessment to characterize their cognitive profile, yielding a Full-Scale IQ (FSIQ) and four index scores: Verbal Comprehension,

Memory processes and prefrontal network dysfunction in cryptogenic epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Impaired memory performance is the most frequently reported cognitive problem in patients with chronic epilepsy. To examine memory deficits many studies have focused on the role of the mesiotemporal lobe, mostly with hippocampal abnormalities. However, the role of the prefrontal brain remains unresolved. To investigate the neuronal correlates of working memory dysfunction in patients without structural lesions, a combined study of neurocognitive assessment, hippocampal and cerebral volumetry, and functional magnetic resonance imaging of temporal and frontal memory networks was perform

A Clinical Research Study of Cognitive Dysfunction and Affective Impairment after Isolated Brainstem Stroke.

Although the function of the cerebellum in neurocognition has been well-documented, the similar role of the brainstem has yet to be fully elucidated. This clinical research study aimed to combine data relating to neuropsychological assessments and P300 to explore cognitive dysfunction and affective impairment following brainstem stroke. Thirty-four patients with isolated brainstem stroke and twenty-six healthy controls were recruited; for each patient, we collated data pertaining to the P300, Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III), Montreal Cognitive Assessment Chinese version (MoCA

Executive functions in older adults with generalised anxiety disorder and healthy controls: Associations with heart rate variability, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and physical fitness.

Executive functions (EF) decline with age and this decline in older adults with generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) may be influenced by heart rate variability (HRV), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and physical fitness. Understanding these relationships is important for tailored treatments in this population. In this study, 51 adults with GAD (M age = 66.46, SD = 4.08) and 51 healthy controls (M age = 67.67, SD = 4.04) were assessed on cognitive inhibition (Stroop task), shifting (Trails part 4), flexibility (Wisconsin Card Sorting Test - Perseverative errors), working memory (Digit

Recognition of metaphor and irony in young adults: the impact of schizotypal personality traits.

Patients with schizophrenia demonstrate two dissociable impairments of pragmatic language comprehension: (1) an insensitivity to irony, which is associated with poor theory-of-mind (i.e. a difficulty with inferring other people's thoughts); and (2) poor recognition of metaphors, which may reflect degraded semantics. This study investigated whether non-clinical high-schizotypal adults show similar impairments of pragmatic language. Thirty-six university students completed the Raine Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire, the Wechsler Memory Scale Logical-Memories subtest, Raven's Progressive Mat

Executive functioning in chronic alcoholism and Korsakoff syndrome.

Korsakoff syndrome (KS) is characterized by dense anterograde and retrograde amnesia. There is often a temporal gradient to the retrograde amnesia, with earlier memories more readily recalled than recent memories. Executive functioning has also been found to be impaired in KS. However, research comparing executive functioning between chronic alcoholics (AL) and patients with KS has been relatively sparse to date. In a group comparison design, executive functioning in 15 KS patients and 16 chronic alcoholic patients was assessed using the Behavioural Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome test

Effects of Saffron on Cognition, Anxiety, and Depression in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: A Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive decline, depression, and anxiety are among the major concerns in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Crocus sativus L. (saffron) seems to be a promising candidate for treatment of these conditions. DESIGN: In this 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, men and women with on-pump CABG, who had Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS) score >70 and age <70 years, received either saffron capsules (15 mg/twice daily) or placebo. Patients were excluded if they had history of treatment with saffron or acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, c
