Insights into the complete and partial photooxidation of black carbon in surface waters.

Increasing wildfire activity in the Alaskan Arctic may result in new sources of black carbon (BC) to arctic watersheds. Black carbon, primar … and physical properties of BC produced from charring arctic biomass were similar to BC produced by wildfires in terrestrial ecosystems based on elemental analysis and FT-ICR MS. Based on the concentration of light-absorbing carbon in each fraction, dissolved BC was disproportionately more susceptible to complete and partial photooxidation compared to parti …

Mental health and post-traumatic stress disorder in firefighters: an integrated analysis from an action research study.

INTRODUCTION: The presence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology in firefighters is an ever-pressing issue that requires close attention for adequate interventions. The present study investigated PTSD and global psychopathology prevalence in a sample of highly risk-exposed Portuguese firefighters, collected after the widespread deadly wildfires in 2017 that ravaged the country. Following an action research approach, the aim of this study was to depict this sample and examine the impact of cumulative adverse experiences on their mental health, which is a phenomenon worth atten…

Computational assessment of the impact that wildland fire smoke exposure has on airflow and particle deposition in the mouse respiratory tract.

Wildland firefighters are frequently exposed to high concentrations of wildland fire smoke (WFS), yet the long-term health impacts of repeated occupational exposures remain poorly understood. To address this, our group recently developed a mouse exposure model to investigate the health effects of repeated exposure to WFS. To complement this previous study, here we perform multi-scale computational dosimetry simulations to quantitatively assess how WFS particulates deposit throughout the mouse respiratory tract. A multi-generational 3-dimensional model of the mouse respiratory tract is created

Extreme Weather Events, Air Pollution, and Cardiovascular Health: Mechanisms and Challenges.

Extreme weather events and air pollution are becoming increasingly frequent and severe, posing complex challenges to human health. Although the adverse effects of these environmental stressors on cardiovascular disease are widely acknowledged, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This review examines these mechanisms from a physiological perspective, considering both pathways that act directly on the heart and those mediated through non-cardiac organs. Airborne particulate pollutants from dust storms, wildfires, and haze days can pass through the respiratory system and rea…

Health-Damaging Climate Events Highlight the Need for Interdisciplinary, Engaged Research.

In 2023 human populations experienced multiple record-breaking climate events, with widespread impacts on human health and well-being. These events include extreme heat domes, drought, severe storms, flooding, and wildfires. Due to inherent lags in the climate system, we can expect such extremes to continue for multiple decades after reaching net zero carbon emissions. Unfortunately, despite these significant current and future impacts, funding for research in climate and health has lagged behind that for other geoscience and biomedical research. While some initial efforts from funding agencie…

Central nervous system Burkitt lymphoma: fornix-to-ventricle dissemination.

Central nervous system Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is exceptionally rare in adolescents without systemic disease. We report a 16-year-old female presenting with progressive headaches and isolated fornix lesions on MRI. Following an initial presumptive diagnosis of viral encephalitis, empiric administration of low-dose dexamethasone and antivirals induced transient symptomatic improvement. A follow-up MRI 50 days later revealed a fulminant "spark-to-wildfire" imaging progression, characterized by multifocal ventricular dissemination and obstructive hydrocephalus. Histopathology and fluorescence in si

Experiencing Trauma During or Before Pregnancy: Qualitative Secondary Analysis After Two Disasters.

BACKGROUND: Despite the existing knowledge about stress, trauma and pregnancy and maternal stress during natural disasters, little is known about what types of trauma pregnant or preconception women experience during these disasters. In May 2016, the worst natural disaster in modern Canadian history required the evacuation of nearly 90,000 residents of the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo (FMWB) area of northern Alberta. Among the thousands of evacuees were an estimated 1850 women who were pregnant or soon to conceive. In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey devastated areas of the United States including

Wrangling Whole Mixtures Risk Assessment: Recent Advances in Determining Sufficient Similarity.

Human health risk assessments for complex mixtures can address real-world exposures and protect public health. While risk assessors typically prefer whole mixture approaches over component-based approaches, data from the precise exposure of interest are often unavailable and surrogate data from a sufficiently similar mixture(s) are required. This review describes recent advances in determining sufficient similarity of whole, complex mixtures spanning the comparison of chemical features, bioactivity profiles, and statistical evaluation to determine "thresholds of similarity". Natural Disasters and Public Health.

2018 brought multiple, unprecedented natural disasters, including hurricanes, floods, and in the United States, the deadliest wildfire in California's history. After the immediate emergency is over and the media attention wanes, communities must deal with the long process of recovering and rebuilding. Yet, some of the greatest challenges that disaster victims face come not only from the disaster itself but also from the long-term health problems stemming from the event. In the immediate aftermath, physical injuries and infections must be treated and controlled. Long-term needs include mental a

Model of Post-traumatic Growth in Newly Traumatized vs. Retraumatized Adolescents.

Background: In our analysis of adolescents affected by the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire, we observed many negative mental health effects in individuals with a prior history of psychological trauma. Elevated rates of depression and markers of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were observed, consistent with the hypothesis that prior trauma may reduce sensitivity thresholds for later psychopathology (stress sensitization). Surprisingly, levels of anxiety did not differ based on prior trauma history, nor were retraumatized individuals at increased risk for recent (past month) suicidal ideation.

Air pollution interventions for health.

Air pollution, a leading environmental health risk, claims millions of lives yearly, impacting health across the lifespan. Despite widespread acknowledgement of air pollution-related disease burdens, eliminating air pollution remains challenging. Many regions are reliant on fossil fuels or biomass for basic survival, and developed economies striving to reduce air pollution face persistent barriers. Climate change complicates intervention efforts, as rising temperatures and extreme weather (for example, wildfires, dust storms) intensify air pollution. Traditional interventions may falter under …

ABIOTIC AND DEMOGRAPHIC DRIVERS OF FLEA PARASITISM ON DEER MICE IN A RECOVERING MIXED-CONIFER FOREST A DECADE POSTFIRE.

With the intensity and frequency of wildfires increasing rapidly, the need to study the ecological effects of these wildfires is also growing. An understudied aspect of fire ecology is the effect fires have on parasite-host interactions, including ectoparasites that might be pathogen vectors. Although some studies have examined the impacts of fire on ticks, studies on other ectoparasites, including pathogen vectors, are rare. To help address this knowledge gap, we examined the abiotic and biotic factors that predict the likelihood and extent of parasitism of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) …

Woodland Decline Undermines Resilience in Fire-Adapted Landscapes.

Open-canopy forests and woodlands are a foundational component of historically fire-adapted landscapes, yet their persistence under contemporary climate and fire regimes remains poorly understood. Here, we leverage historical aerial photogrammetry integrated with contemporary satellite imagery to assess landscape change, vegetation transitions, and ecological stability over a century (1930s-2020s) for a large regional landscape of the Interior Northwest. We found woodlands declined by more than 40% across the region and exhibited high rates of type conversion, with roughly half converting to c

Addressing the data imbalance issue in machine learning modeling of rare and disruptive outage events.

Rare natural hazards-such as severe storms, flooding, and wildfires-are difficult to model due to scarcity of high-quality observational data. This scarcity results in an imbalance within the dataset, where high-impact events are severely underrepresented, reducing the effectiveness of machine learning (ML) models. In this study, we propose a framework using stable diffusion to generate physical consistent synthetic storm events for data enrichment. Our method generates paired input-output samples, ensuring that synthetic meteorological fields are meaningfully aligned with their corresponding …

Heat-health action plans overlook Europe's most important health system resource: the health and care workforce.

Europe is warming at more than twice the global average, and heatwaves increasingly coincide with extreme wildfires, rainfall, floods and storms, creating growing health security risks while intensifying an ongoing health and care workforce crisis. Governments across the European Region have scaled-up action to establish heat-health action plans, supported by comprehensive WHO guidance. However, health and care workers remain largely absent from these strategies, which continue to place their focus on protecting populations rather than the workforce responsible for delivering care. Workforce m…

Building Resilience in Hemodialysis Care: A Program Report on the British Columbia Hemodialysis Emergency Support Team.

This program report describes the development and implementation of the Hemodialysis Emergency Support Team (HEST) in British Columbia, an initiative led by BC Renal in partnership with the province's 5 health authorities. The HEST was created in response to the growing risk of climate-related emergencies such as wildfires, floods, and water shortages, with the goal of ensuring continuity of care for patients receiving maintenance dialysis during service disruptions. The report outlines the provincial strategy behind HEST, including capacity building during non-emergency periods, strengthening…
