BACKGROUND: The ability to automatically detect anxiety disorders from speech could be useful as a screening tool for an anxiety disorder. Prior studies have shown that individual words in textual transcripts of speech have an association with anxiety severity. Transformer-based neural networks are models that have been recently shown to have powerful predictive capabilities based on the context of more than one input word. Transformers detect linguistic patterns and can be separately trained to make specific predictions based on these patterns.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whethe

INTRODUCTION: Mild difficulties performing everyday activities may emerge early in Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias, creating a need for objective, efficient measures sensitive to subtle functional changes. This study investigated a script generation task (SGT), which required individuals to verbally describe the steps needed to complete familiar everyday activities, as a potential method for detecting mild functional difficulties in older adults with or without mild cognitive impairment (MCI). We examined both human-coded features of script generation and automate

Reading decoding requires the association of a visual input (the printed word) with a verbal output (the spoken word), and the learning of visual-phonological associations via repeated exposure occurs both explicitly (by instruction and training) and implicitly (by exposure to written material). However, a general ability to implicitly learn visual-phonological associations (or cross-modal bindings) in children with reading difficulties (RD) has not been deeply explored. The present paper examined this issue in two studies comparing groups of children with RD with matched groups of control chi

Twenty participants who were deaf and 20 chronological age-matched participants with typical hearing (TH) (mean age: 12 years) were asked to judge the correctness of written sentences with or without a grammatically incongruent word while their eye movements were registered. TH participants outperformed deaf participants in grammaticality judgment accuracy. For both groups, First Pass and Total Fixation Times of target words in correct trials were significantly longer in the incongruent condition than in the congruent one. However, whereas TH students showed longer First Pass in the target are

Children with selective mutism (SM) fail to speak in specific public situations (e.g., school), despite speaking normally in other situations (e.g., at home). The current study explored the phenomenon of SM in a sample of 57 non-clinical children aged 3-6 years. Children performed two speech tasks to assess their absolute amount of spoken words, while their parents completed questionnaires for measuring children's levels of SM, social anxiety and non-social anxiety symptoms as well as the temperament characteristic of behavioral inhibition. The results indicated that high levels of parent-repo

Anterior lateral prefrontal cortex (aLPFC) has been consistently implicated in retrieval monitoring and relational reasoning. However, it is unknown whether aLPFC supports a cognitive process that is common to memory retrieval and reasoning tasks. To inform this question, a first step is to ascertain whether there is, within individuals, spatial overlap in aLPFC between tasks. A prior study found overlap in activation of left aLPFC between verbal analogy and source memory retrieval tasks, using tightly matched word stimuli (Westphal et al., 2016). To assess whether this overlap in activation e

Previous research has linked inattentive symptom expression to reading difficulties, primarily in clinically referred samples or using indirect academic indicators. The present study examines attentional variability in a nonreferred community-based school sample with no clinical diagnoses or referrals, using standardized reading measures. The study further tested whether attentional variability moderates associations between cognitive linguistic skills and reading comprehension. 267 fifth grade students (mean age = 10.8 years) completed standardized measures of word reading efficiency, vocabul

OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is known to impact semantic access, which is frequently evaluated using the Category Fluency (Animals) test. Recent studies have suggested that in addition to overall category fluency scores (total number of words produced over time), poor clustering could signal AD-related cognitive difficulties. In this study, we examined the association between category fluency clustering performance (i.e., stating words sequentially that are all contained within a subcategory, such as domestic animals) and brain pathology in individuals with autosomal dominant Alzheimer

PURPOSE: Many children have difficulties understanding speech. At present, there are few assessments that test for subtle impairments in speech perception with normative data from U.K. children. We present a new test that evaluates children's ability to identify target words in background noise by choosing between minimal pair alternatives that differ by a single articulatory phonetic feature. This task (a) is tailored to testing young children, but also readily applicable to adults; (b) has minimal memory demands; (c) adapts to the child's ability; and (d) does not require reading or verbal o

OBJECTIVE: Remote assessment of episodic memory would be a cost-effective alternative to in-person visits for early detection of memory impairment related to Alzheimer's disease (AD), but there is a need for test development and studies in population-based samples. The aim of this study was to investigate the validity and correlates of a novel three-trial administration of 10-word list learning included in the modified Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status in a population-based study of 65- to 96-year-old individuals.
METHOD: A total of 800 participants completed telephone-administered wor

Purpose Multiple factors impact reading acquisition in individuals with reading disability, including genetic disorders such as Williams syndrome (WS). Despite a relative strength in oral language, individuals with WS usually have an intellectual disability and tend to display deficits in areas associated with reading. There is substantial variability in their reading skills. While some authors have postulated that phonological deficits are at the source of their reading deficits, others have suggested that they can be attributed to visuospatial deficits. This study was the first to undertake

Depression has been linked to a negative bias in emotional perception, with patients frequently showing more negative valence and higher arousal ratings of emotional stimuli, such as words and images. Nevertheless, studies in large depression cohorts which also incorporate longitudinal and genetic data are lacking. We investigated the effects of depression on valence and arousal ratings of emotional words at two time points in 1392 participants of the BiDirect Study, a German cohort enriched in patients that were hospitalized due to an acute depressive episode at the time of recruitment. Data

OBJECTIVE: To better define potential executive function difficulties in individuals living with HIV but not clinically identified as having HAND, with and without mild to moderate cocaine dependence (CD), our cross-sectional study examined executive function performance on the Stroop Color-Word Test (Stroop) and the Trail Making Test (TMT) in four groups stratified by HIV and CD status.
METHOD: We recruited 101 participants (26 HIV+/CD+; 18 HIV+/CD-; 30 HIV-/CD+; 27 HIV-/CD-). We utilized a 2 (HIV: yes/no) × 2 (Cocaine: yes/no) MANCOVA while controlling for age and premorbid intelligence on

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Albuminuria and carotid atherosclerosis are predictors of cardiovascular disease and potential predictors of cognitive decline. Our aim was to study whether albuminuria was an early predictor of cognitive function independent of carotid atherosclerosis in a general population.
METHODS: The study population comprised 1,577 adults without self-reported stroke. In 1994 and 2007 all were screened for cardiovascular risk factors, urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR), carotid intima-media thickness and carotid total plaque area (TPA). Endpoints were neuropsychological test result

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Given the increased incidence of renal anemia and cognitive dysfunction in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), the association between hemoglobin levels and cognitive function in these patients remains elucidated. An optimal level of hemoglobin for the best cognitive performance in CKD has yet to be determined.
METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using data from 2011-2014 of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Enrolled subjects for analysis were divided into the CKD and the non-CKD groups. The Animal Flue

Teacher reading-related knowledge (phonological awareness and phonics knowledge) predicts student reading, however little is known about the reading-related knowledge of parents. Participants comprised 70 dyads (children from kindergarten and grade 1 and their parents). Parents were administered a questionnaire tapping into reading-related knowledge, print exposure, storybook reading, and general cultural knowledge. Children were tested on measures of letter-word knowledge, sound awareness, receptive vocabulary, oral expression, and mathematical skill. Parent reading-related knowledge showed s

INTRODUCTION: A rapid and reliable neuropsychological protocol is essential for the efficient assessment of neurocognitive constructs related to emergent neurodegenerative diseases. We developed an AI-assisted, digitally administered/scored neuropsychological protocol that can be remotely administered in ~10 min. This protocol assesses the requisite neurocognitive constructs associated with emergent neurodegenerative illnesses.
METHODS: The protocol was administered to 77 ambulatory care/memory clinic patients (56.40% women; 88.50% Caucasian). The protocol includes a 6-word version of the Phi

Human olfaction can be extraordinarily sensitive, and its most common assessment method is odor identification (OID), where everyday odors are matched to word labels in a multiple-choice format. However, many older persons are unable to identify familiar odors, a deficit that is associated with the risk of future dementia and mortality. The underlying processes subserving OID in older adults are poorly understood. Here, we analyzed error patterns in OID to test whether errors could be explained by perceptual and/or semantic similarities among the response alternatives. We investigated the OID

OBJECTIVE: Public attitudes and stigma toward epilepsy may limit patient motivation for treatment and participation in social activities. Stigma research requiring individuals to report personal beliefs is useful but is subject to social desirability bias. Self-reporting methods often do not capture implicit attitudes; therefore, in this study, implicit stigma was measured using the implicit association test (IAT), which is a word sorting task to minimize this bias. Recently, in Japan, several serious car accidents caused by people with epilepsy (PWE) resulted in pedestrian fatalities. Traffic
