Zinc supplements for preventing otitis media.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media (inflammation of the middle ear, usually caused by infection) affects people of all ages, but is particularly common in young children. Around 164 million people worldwide have long-term hearing loss caused by this condition, 90% of them in low-income countries. Because zinc supplements prevent pneumonia in disadvantaged children, we wondered whether they prevent otitis media. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether zinc supplements prevent otitis media in adults and children of different ages. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (…

Zinc diethyldithiocarbamate allergenicity: potential haptenation mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Zinc diethyldithiocarbamate (ZDEC) and its disulfide, tetraethylthiuram disulfide (TETD), are rubber accelerators and contact allergens that cross-react in some individuals. OBJECTIVE: This study explored potential protein haptenation mechanisms of ZDEC and its oxidation products. METHODS: ZDEC oxidation/reduction products and sites of protein binding were assessed using high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. The murine local lymph node assay (LLNA) was employed to probe haptenation mechanisms of ZDEC by examining its allergenicity along with its oxidation …

Changes in zinc absorption during development.

Zinc (Zn) nutrition is of special practical importance in infants and young children, however relatively little is known about maturation and comparative aspects of Zn absorption. The principal objective of this paper is to compare Zn absorption of term infants, preterm infants, and adults on low phytate diets. Existing data derived from using Zn stable isotopes as extrinsic labels for an entire day were modeled with saturation kinetic analysis (saturable response model). When adjusted for differences in length of small intestine, the efficiency of Zn absorption for both term (4 months) and pr…

Anosmia after intranasal zinc gluconate use.

BACKGROUND: Zinc is an essential mineral. Beneficial zinc absorption takes place via enteral, parenteral, or cutaneous routes. However, direct application to the olfactory epithelium has been reported to cause loss of smell. Recently, intranasal zinc gluconate has been recommended as a treatment for the common cold. Severe posttreatment hyposmia and anosmia have been observed. METHODS: The case report of a typical patient is presented and analyzed in detail, followed by a series of patients with severe hyposmia or anosmia after the use of intranasal zinc gluconate. RESULTS: Although interind…

Zinc burns: a rare burn injury.

A patient was presented with significant burns resulting from a workplace accident in a zinc production unit. This occurred as a result of the spontaneous combustion of zinc bleed under high pressure. The patient sustained burns to the face, body, and hands and suffered significant injury to the left cornea. Computed imaging revealed solid particles in the ethmoid sinus and also in the right nasal fossa, dissecting the right lacrimal duct. Photographic documentation is presented. This injury was potentially preventable and resulted from poor observance of safety procedures.

[Zinc and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease].

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the zinc organic concentration in the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in relation to a control group. Also, to analyze if the serum zinc levels are related with zinc concentration in erythrocyte, nail and hair. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty patients of COPD have been studied, all males, average age 62 +/- 7 years and body mass index (BMI) of 27 +/- 4. Forty patients were included in the control group, with average age 57 +/- 9 years and BMI of 24 +/- 5. The patients with concomitant disease or booth treatment that could increase the zinc excretion were exclu…

Maternal zinc indices and small babies.

BACKGROUND: Maternal zinc deficiency has been reported to be associated with foetal growth retardation. This study aimed to determine if zinc deficiency is associated with foetal growth retardation in south Indian women. METHODS: A prospective study was undertaken to evaluate the maternal zinc indices in those bearing small-for-gestational age babies and in those with appropriate-for-gestational age babies. Zinc levels in plasma, red blood cells and white blood cells in both groups were assayed in 65 patients with small-for-gestational age babies (regardless of cause) and 51 women with approp…

Zinc protoporphyrin and iron-deficient erythropoiesis.

Iron-deficient erythropoiesis may occur in patients with adequate levels of storage iron as well as those with tissue iron deficiency. Here we compare two methods of detecting iron-deficient erythropoiesis. The measurement of percent hypochromic cells in the full blood count provides a direct indicator of iron-deficient erythropoiesis. The zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) determination is simple, precise and reproducible, and also appears to provide a sensitive index of iron-deficient erythropoiesis. There was a significant correlation between ZPP levels and percent hypochromic cells in patients with…

Laboratory diagnosis of zinc phosphide poisoning.

Zinc phosphide, a readily-available rodenticide, poses a significant risk for intoxication in animals. Animals have been poisoned by ingesting treated bait or the carcasses of poisoned rodents. Toxicity is due to the liberation of phosphine gas in the stomach. Clinical signs include central nervous system excitation, depression and vomition. Similarities of clinical signs with other central nervous system toxicants make the diagnosis difficult without a specific diagnostic test. The procedure outlined in this paper detects phosphine liberated from zinc phosphide by the addition of hydrochloric…

[Acrodermatitis enteropathica--congenital zinc deficiency syndrome].

The importance of the presence of zinc in human physiology and pathology has been analysed. The disturbances in the prostaglandin synthesis in the impaired intestinal zinc absorbtion have been of special interest. It is known that the deficiency of zinc results in the inborn clinical syndrome oh he disease and both its past and present treatment methods.

Zinc deficiency: report of three cases.

Acrodermatitis enteropathica has been reported as the skin disorder due to the congenital disturbance of zinc absorption in the intestine. We report on three patients with skin eruptions that resembled acrodermatitis enteropathica. Two were thought to have resulted from intravenous hyperalimentation and the other from artificial feeding.

Topical zinc and delayed hypersensitivity responsiveness.

The ability of topical zinc to enhance the DHR to skin test antigens may be a simple method of evaluating functional zinc status. Additional testing is required to determine the sensitivity and specificity of this technique. In addition to zinc, other nutrient deficiencies such as protein deficiency may suppress DHR. Because of this and because of the variability among individuals in degree of reactiveness, each patient should serve as his/her own control, with zinc-treated and nontreated skin test sites being evaluated simultaneously.

Oral zinc sulphate for Wilson's disease.

After initial promotion of copper excretion with D-penicillamine, the effect of oral zinc sulphate (3 X 150 mg/day, loading dose; 3 X 100 mg/day, maintenance dose) in two children with clinically stable Wilson's disease was evaluated after completion of three years' treatment. The course, judged by clinical, biochemical, and histological parameters was satisfactory in both. The urinary copper concentration reverted to less than 1.26 mumol/24 hours; and the serum copper concentration decreased further during zinc sulphate treatment. In one child the rise in 24 hour urinary copper excretion obse…

Serum zinc levels in retinitis pigmentosa.

Serum zinc and copper levels were analyzed in 26 retinitis pigmentosa patients and compared with serum zinc levels of a control group. Serum zinc levels were documented to be decreased with a mean concentration of 0.735 +/- 0.167 micrograms/ml (p less than 0.001). Serum copper levels, on the other hand, were found to be increased in retinitis pigmentosa patients with a mean value of 1.261 +/- 0.348 micrograms/ml (p less than 0.001).

Zinc deficiency syndrome versus glucagonoma syndrome.

In this paper two patients with uncommon syndromes, viz. acrodermatitis enteropathica-like eruption due to acute zinc deficiency, when on long-term intravenous hyperalimentation for Crohn's disease, and necrolytic migratory erythema as a consequence of a malignant glucagon secreting alpha-cell tumour of the pancreas (glucagonoma syndrome) are reported. Attention is paid to the many common features of the skin lesions in both syndromes. This is discussed in detail. Both patients passed through a catabolic stage. Laboratory investigations, however, failed to demonstrate a common biochemical mech…
