Differential diagnosis of common etiologies of left ventricular hypertrophy using a hybrid CNN-LSTM model.

Differential diagnosis of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is often obscure on echocardiography and requires numerous additional tests. We aimed to develop a deep learning algorithm to aid in the differentiation of common etiologies of LVH (i.e. hypertensive heart disease [HHD], hypertrophic cardiomyopathy [HCM], and light-chain cardiac amyloidosis [ALCA]) on echocardiographic images. Echocardiograms in 5 standard views (parasternal long-axis, parasternal short-axis, apical 4-chamber, apical 2-chamber, and apical 3-chamber) were obtained from 930 subjects: 112 with HHD, 191 with HCM, 81 with

Learning Two-Stream CNN for Multi-Modal Age-Related Macular Degeneration Categorization.

This paper tackles automated categorization of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a common macular disease among people over 50. Previous research efforts mainly focus on AMD categorization with a single-modal input, let it be a color fundus photograph (CFP) or an OCT B-scan image. By contrast, we consider AMD categorization given a multi-modal input, a direction that is clinically meaningful yet mostly unexplored. Contrary to the prior art that takes a traditional approach of feature extraction plus classifier training that cannot be jointly optimized, we opt for end-to-end multi-modal C

A neural network for tics: insights from causal brain lesions and deep brain stimulation.

Brain lesions are a rare cause of tic disorders. However, they can provide uniquely causal insights into tic pathophysiology and can also inform on possible neuromodulatory therapeutic targets. Based on a systematic literature review, we identified 22 cases of tics causally attributed to brain lesions and employed 'lesion network mapping' to interrogate whether tic-inducing lesions would be associated with a common network in the average human brain. We probed this using a normative functional connectome acquired in 1000 healthy participants. We then examined the specificity of the identified

Chest Radiographs Using a Context-Fusion Convolution Neural Network (CNN): Can It Distinguish the Etiology of Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) in Children?

Clinical symptoms and inflammatory markers cannot reliably distinguish the etiology of CAP, and chest radiographs have abundant information related with CAP. Hence, we developed a context-fusion convolution neural network (CNN) to explore the application of chest radiographs to distinguish the etiology of CAP in children. This retrospective study included 1769 cases of pediatric pneumonia (viral pneumonia, n = 487; bacterial pneumonia, n = 496; and mycoplasma pneumonia, n = 786). The chest radiographs of the first examination, C-reactive protein (CRP), and white blood cell (WBC) were collected

Optimizing Fenton-like process, homogeneous at neutral pH for ciprofloxacin degradation: Comparing RSM-CCD and ANN-GA.

Antibiotics are considered among the most non-biodegradable environmental contaminants due to their genetic resistance. Considering the importance of antibiotics removal, this study was aimed at multi-objective modeling and optimization of the Fenton-like process, homogeneous at initial circumneutral pH. Two main issues, including maximizing Ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal and minimizing sludge to iron ratio (SIR), were modeled by comparing central composite design (CCD) based on Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and hybrid Artificial Neural Network-Genetic Algorithm (ANN-GA). Results of simultan

Fully automatic resolution of untargeted GC-MS data with deep learning assistance.

DeepResolution (Deep learning-assisted multivariate curve Resolution) has been proposed to solve the co-eluting problem for GC-MS data. However, DeepResolution models must be retrained when encountering unknown components, which is undoubtedly time-consuming and burdensome. In this study, a new pipeline named DeepResoution2 was proposed to overcome these limitations. DeepResolution2 utilizes deep neural networks to divide the profile into segments, estimate the number of components in each segment, and predict the elution region of each component. Subsequently, the information obtained by thes

DeBoNet: A deep bone suppression model ensemble to improve disease detection in chest radiographs.

Automatic detection of some pulmonary abnormalities using chest X-rays may be impacted adversely due to obscuring by bony structures like the ribs and the clavicles. Automated bone suppression methods would increase soft tissue visibility and enhance automated disease detection. We evaluate this hypothesis using a custom ensemble of convolutional neural network models, which we call DeBoNet, that suppresses bones in frontal CXRs. First, we train and evaluate variants of U-Nets, Feature Pyramid Networks, and other proposed custom models using a private collection of CXR images and their bone-su

Face Presentation Attack Detection Using Deep Background Subtraction.

Currently, face recognition technology is the most widely used method for verifying an individual's identity. Nevertheless, it has increased in popularity, raising concerns about face presentation attacks, in which a photo or video of an authorized person's face is used to obtain access to services. Based on a combination of background subtraction (BS) and convolutional neural network(s) (CNN), as well as an ensemble of classifiers, we propose an efficient and more robust face presentation attack detection algorithm. This algorithm includes a fully connected (FC) classifier with a majority vot

Diagnostic performance evaluation of adult Chiari malformation type I based on convolutional neural networks.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of convolutional neural network (CNN) models in Chiari malformation type I (CMI) and to verify whether CNNs can identify the morphological features of the craniocervical junction region between patients with CMI and healthy controls (HCs). To date, numerous indicators based on manual measurements are used for the diagnosis of CMI. However, the corresponding postoperative efficacy and prognostic evaluations have remained inconsistent. From a diagnostic perspective, CNN models may be used to explore the relationship between the cli

Genetic algorithm (GA) - Artificial neural network (ANN) modeling for the emission rates of toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from landfill working surface.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from the working surface of landfills have received increasing attention due to the potential risks to human health. Quantifying the emission rates of risky VOCs is important to their health risk assessment but is also challenging because of their high variation and complicated relationship between the emission rates and various influencing factors. In this study, a continuous nine-month sampling of VOCs was conducted on a landfill working surface to identify dominant VOCs that are risky to human health and to construct artificial neural network (ANN)

Classification of Wideband Tympanometry by Deep Transfer Learning With Data Augmentation for Automatic Diagnosis of Otosclerosis.

Otosclerosis is a common disease of the middle ear leading to stapedial fixation. Its rapid and non-invasive diagnosis could be achieved through wideband tympanometry (WBT), but the interpretation of the raw data provided by this tool is complex and time-consuming. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) could potentially be applied to this situation to help the clinicians categorize WBT data. A dataset containing 135 samples from 80 patients with otosclerosis and 55 controls was obtained. We designed a lightweight CNN to categorize samples into the otosclerosis and control. Receiver operating cha

Classification of oral salivary gland tumors based on texture features in optical coherence tomography images.

Currently, the diagnoses of oral diseases primarily depend on the visual recognition of experienced clinicians. It has been proven that automatic recognition based on images can support clinical decision-making by extracting and analyzing objective hidden information. In recent years, optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become a powerful optical imaging technique with the advantages of high resolution and non-invasion. In our study, a dataset composed of four kinds of oral salivary gland tumors (SGTs) was obtained from a homemade swept-source OCT, including two benign and two malignant tumo

Ensemble Models of Cutting-Edge Deep Neural Networks for Blood Glucose Prediction in Patients with Diabetes.

This article proposes two ensemble neural network-based models for blood glucose prediction at three different prediction horizons-30, 60, and 120 min-and compares their performance with ten recently proposed neural networks. The twelve models' performances are evaluated under the same OhioT1DM Dataset, preprocessing workflow, and tools at the three prediction horizons using the most common metrics in blood glucose prediction, and we rank the best-performing ones using three methods devised for the statistical comparison of the performance of multiple algorithms: scmamp, model confidence set,
