Mechanism of initiation of oscillatory motion in human glottis.

Phonatory onsets of 17 normal subjects under usual speech conditions were investigated by measuring the cross-sectional area of the glottic aperture, using a photoelectric device. During a normal soft or breathy onset of phonation, the vocal fold vibration begins with an open glottis; the pattern of the optical signal is a sine wave of increasing amplitude with one to eight cycles before steady state oscillation is achieved. The first deflection of the base-line is either towards adduction or towards abduction. The classically assumed--since van den Berg et al. (1957)--retro-aspiration phenome

Device-modified trabeculectomy for glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy that leads to vision loss and blindness. It is the second most common cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. The main treatment for glaucoma aims to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) in order to slow or prevent further vision loss. IOP can be lowered with medications, and laser or incisional surgeries. Trabeculectomy is the most common incisional surgical procedure to treat glaucoma. Device-modified trabeculectomy is intended to improve drainage of the aqueous humor to lower IOP. Trabeculectomy-modifying devices include Ex-PRESS, Ologen, amniotic

Brain-based symptoms reported in young adults evaluated for cervical spine etiology: a retrospective, cross-sectional clinical study with preliminary data on over 200 patients.

BACKGROUND: "Brain-based" is a term encompassing physical or psychological symptoms that occur due to altered brain function. Brain-based symptoms are on the rise, commonly associated with factors such as electronic device use, chronic stress, and neuroinflammation, but often with an unknown etiology. Here we explore cervical spine abnormalities as a potential underlying factor. OBJECTIVE: Based on clinical observations of frequent brain-based complaints, this study aimed to examine whether relatively young adults with brain-based symptoms had patterns of structural cervical spine dysfunction

Correlation of Mitochondrial Flavoprotein Fluorescence and Sectoral OCT in Patients with Glaucoma, Suspects, and Ocular Hypertension.

PURPOSE: Flavoprotein fluorescence (FPF) can be measured using a noninvasive investigational device, the OcuMet Beacon (OcuSciences). The Beacon uses blue light to stimulate oxidized mitochondrial flavoproteins, which subsequently emit green autofluorescence. As mitochondrial metabolic stress may reflect axonal damage in glaucomatous eyes, this cross-sectional, exploratory study investigated relationships between optical coherence tomography (OCT) structural parameters and FPF values in patients with glaucoma, ocular hypertension, and glaucoma suspects. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Individuals with

In Silico Optimization of a Non-Invasive Optical Sensor for Hemoconcentration Monitoring in Dengue Fever Management.

Severe Dengue fever can cause Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), a life-threatening condition characterized by plasma leakage and hemoconcentration. A hematocrit (Hct) rise of ≥20% is a key indicator for medical intervention, but current monitoring is invasive and intermittent. This study aims to determine the optimal design parameters for a non-invasive optical sensor to continuously monitor hemoconcentration. We developed a high-fidelity Monte Carlo model of light transport in a multi-layered skin model, with the epidermis set to a 5% melanin volume fraction (Fitzpatrick type II/III). To ensure

Differentiation of Tumors of the Upper Respiratory Tract Using Optical Metabolic Imaging.

OBJECTIVES: With over 184,000 new cases and more than 99,000 deaths per year, malignancies of the larynx are a global health problem. Currently, a dedicated screening method enabling a direct onsite diagnosis is missing. This can lead to delayed diagnosis and worse outcomes of the patients. An endoscopic optical method enabling a direct distinction between healthy tissue, dysplastic tissue and cancerous tissue would be an ideal tool for the detection of tumors of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT). Healthy and tumor cells differ significantly in their metabolic state due to the different met

An optimized method for retrograde labelling and quantification of rabbit retinal ganglion cells.

Rabbits are a commonly used animal model in glaucoma research, but their application has been limited by the techniques used to assess optic nerve injury (ONI). Our study devised an optimized method for retrograde labelling and analysing rabbit retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). This method involved improvements over the conventional method regarding the stereotaxic device, the positioning of superior colliculi, the target of axonal tracer delivery, and the visualization and analysis of labelled RGCs. To evaluate its efficacy, eight New Zealand White rabbits were divided into naïve and ONI groups.

A Randomized Trial Comparing the NeoVas Sirolimus-Eluting Bioresorbable Scaffold and Metallic Everolimus-Eluting Stents.

OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the NeoVas bioresorbable scaffold (BRS) compared with metallic drug-eluting stents. BACKGROUND: BRS have the potential to improve very late outcomes compared with metallic drug-eluting stents, but some BRS have been associated with increased rates of device thrombosis before complete bioresorption. NeoVas is a new poly-l-lactic acid BRS that elutes sirolimus from a poly-D, l-lactide coating. METHODS: Eligible patients with a single de novo native coronary artery lesion with a reference vessel diameter 2.5 to 3.75 mm a

Neuromyelitis optica study model based on chronic infusion of autoantibodies in rat cerebrospinal fluid.

BACKGROUND: Devic's neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an autoimmune astrocytopathy, associated with central nervous system inflammation, demyelination, and neuronal injury. Several studies confirmed that autoantibodies directed against aquaporin-4 (AQP4-IgG) are relevant in the pathogenesis of NMO, mainly through complement-dependent toxicity leading to astrocyte death. However, the effect of the autoantibody per se and the exact role of intrathecal AQP4-IgG are still controversial. METHODS: To explore the intrinsic effect of intrathecal AQP4-IgG, independent from additional inflammatory effector

Partial ligand exchange on CsPbI3 nanocrystals with alkyl phosphonium iodide improves phase stability and emission efficiency in light-emitting diodes.

All-inorganic colloidal CsPbI3 nanocrystals are promising materials for light-emitting applications owing to their excellent optoelectronic properties. However, their practical implementation remains limited by surface defects, ligand instability, and phase degradation under ambient conditions. Here, we employ trimethyl(dodecyl)phosphonium iodide (TDP-I) as a post-synthetic ligand for partial ligand exchange on CsPbI3 nanocrystals initially coated with a ligand shell that is primarily composed of oleylammonium ions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and

Broadband Electromagnetic Field Prediction at Unseen Wavelengths via Physics-Guided Neural Operators.

Surrogate solvers that deliver full-wave accuracy across broad spectral ranges can unlock the rapid design and analysis of nanophotonic devices. We present a physics-guided neural-operator surrogate solver that predicts electromagnetic field distributions throughout the visible band from a permittivity map and a query wavelength, including wavelengths unseen during training. Our approach is built on two key ideas: (i) spectral consistency, which formalizes the intrinsic relationship between wavelength-dependent field variations and spatial frequency, and (ii) a conditional embedding framework

NeuroVisio SyncPatch: A Skin-Conformal Multimodal EMG-Motion Sensing Platform for Quantitative Neuromuscular Rehabilitation and Performance Monitoring.

Effective musculoskeletal rehabilitation requires simultaneous assessment of muscle activation and movement kinematics, yet no current system enables this at home. Laboratory motion capture systems provide accurate kinematics but require controlled environments, while portable inertial sensors enable home use at the cost of drift and incomplete joint angle resolution. Critically, neither approach provides direct physiological insight into the muscle activation driving functional movement. Here, we present NeuroVisio SyncPatch, a wearable multimodal platform that unifies conformal surface elect
