Neural mechanisms underlying the influence of retrieval ability on creating and recalling creative ideas.

Previous studies revealed a close relationship between retrieval ability and creative thinking; however, it is still unclear what processes of creative thinking are influenced by retrieval ability. This study applied a novel task paradigm to distinguish between different processes of creative thinking. We used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to explore the differences of cortical activation and functional connectivity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), temporoparietal junction (TPJ) and temporal cortex between high (HRA) and low (LRA) retrieval ability groups during creating origina

A Review of the Measurement of the Neurology of Gait in Cognitive Dysfunction or Dementia, Focusing on the Application of fNIRS during Dual-Task Gait Assessment.

Poor motor function or physical performance is a predictor of cognitive decline. Additionally, slow gait speed is associated with poor cognitive performance, with gait disturbances being a risk factor for dementia. Parallel declines in muscular and cognitive performance (resulting in cognitive frailty) might be driven primarily by muscle deterioration, but bidirectional pathways involving muscle-brain crosstalk through the central and peripheral nervous systems are likely to exist. Following screening, early-stage parallel declines may be manageable and modifiable through simple interventions.

Predicting the Degree of Distracted Driving Based on fNIRS Functional Connectivity: A Pilot Study.

Distracted driving is one of the main causes of traffic accidents. By predicting the attentional state of drivers, it is possible to prevent distractions and promote safe driving. In this study, we developed a model that could predict the degree of distracted driving based on brain activity. Changes in oxyhemoglobin concentrations were measured in drivers while driving a real car using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). A regression model was constructed for each participant using functional connectivity as an explanatory variable and brake reaction time to random beeps while drivi

Identifying neuroimaging biomarkers of major depressive disorder from cortical hemodynamic responses using machine learning approaches.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) could enable timely interventions and effective management which subsequently improve clinical outcomes. However, quantitative and objective assessment tools for the suspected cases who present with depressive symptoms have not been fully established. METHODS: Based on a large-scale dataset (n = 363 subjects) collected with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) measurements during the verbal fluency task (VFT), this study proposed a data representation method for extracting spatiotemporal characteristics of NIRS signals, w

[Fetal and pediatric cardiovascular physiology : Things you should know as an (pediatric) anesthesiologist].

Immediately after birth the physiology of the cardiovascular system of the neonate undergoes some significant changes. The first breaths in life and the inflation of the lungs lead to a considerable drop in pulmonary arterial resistance. This results in the closure of the foramen ovale and ductus arteriosus; however, during the first weeks of life a sharp rise in pulmonary vascular resistance caused by hypoxia, hypercapnia and excessive positive pressure ventilation can lead to the reopening of the ductus arteriosus. This may result in subsequent strain of the left heart. In order to anticipat

The Utility of Cerebral Autoregulation Indices in Detecting Severe Brain Injury Varies by Cooling Treatment Phase in Neonates with Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy.

Identifying the hemodynamic range that best supports cerebral perfusion using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) autoregulation monitoring is a potential physiologic marker for neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) during therapeutic hypothermia. However, an optimal autoregulation monitoring algorithm has not been identified for neonatal clinical medicine. We tested whether the hemoglobin volume phase (HVP), hemoglobin volume (HVx), and pressure passivity index (PPI) identify changes in autoregulation that are associated with brain injury on MRI or death. The HVP measures the phase dif

The Changes in Concentration of Cerebral Oxygenated Hemoglobin During Single Event-Related Japanese Shiritori Task in Patients With Major Depression Disorder: Comparison With Healthy Subjects.

Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) have been reported to show cognitive impairments in attention, cognition control, and motivation. The purpose of this study is to compare and examine the characteristics of frontal and temporal cortical activity in outpatients with MDD during the word production task (Shiritori) using a single event-related Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) measurement method that was originally devised. The subjects were 29 MDD patients and 29 age matched healthy controls. In this task, one session consisted of two contrasting conditions (word production task, con

Small lipid core burden index in patients with stable angina pectoris is also associated with microvascular dysfunction: Insights from intracoronary electrocardiogram.

Near-infrared spectroscopy with intravascular ultrasound (NIRS)-IVUS enables precise detection of lipid core burden. Intracoronary electrocardiography (ECG) can detect slight ischemia during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), indicating microvascular dysfunction (MD) by distal embolization, etc. Thus, this study aimed to investigate whether plaques with a low max-lipid core burden index (LCBI) at 4 mm (LCBI4mm) influence MD, using intracoronary ECG. We enrolled 40 consecutive patients who underwent PCI for stable angina pectoris (SAP) due to stenosis of the proximal segment of the left

Effect of Adrenaline on Cerebral Blood Oxygenation Measured by NIRS in a Rat Asphyxia Cardiac Arrest Model.

Adrenaline is an important pharmacologic treatment during cardiac arrest (CA) for resuscitation. Recent studies suggest that adrenaline increases the likelihood of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) but does not contribute to improving neurological outcomes of CA. The mechanisms have not been elucidated yet. A bimodal increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP) is observed after adrenaline injection in rodent CA models [17]. In this study, we focused on alteration of systemic arterial pressure in conjunction with the measurement of cerebral blood oxygenation (CBO) such as oxyhemoglobin (Oxy

Cerebral oxygenation monitoring of ex-preterm infants during the infant car seat challenge test.

UNLABELLED: The American Academy of Pediatrics and until recently the Canadian Paediatric Society recommend preterm infants undergo an Infant Car Seat Challenge test prior to discharge to rule out systemic oxygen desaturation when placed at a 45-degree angle in a car seat. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) provides objective measurements of the impact of systemic oxygen (SO2) desaturation, bradycardia, or both on cerebral regional oxygen saturation (rSO2). OBJECTIVE: To characterize baseline cerebral rSO2 during a car seat trial in preterm infants ready for discharge. DESIGN/METHODS: A prosp

Design of the randomized, placebo-controlled evolocumab for early reduction of LDL-cholesterol levels in patients with acute coronary syndromes (EVOPACS) trial.

Statins lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and improve clinical outcomes in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). Patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) often do not achieve LDL-C targets despite potent statin treatment, and have a particularly high risk of early recurrent events. Evolocumab, a proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type (PCSK9)-inhibitor resulting in rapid, marked LDL-C reduction, has been studied in hypercholesterolemic subjects without CVD and stabilized patients with CVD; the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of this treatment ini

Evaluation of Skeletal Muscle Function and Effects of Early Rehabilitation during Acute Heart Failure: Rationale and Study Design.

BACKGROUND: Acute heart failure (AHF) is associated with disturbances of the peripheral perfusion leading to the dysfunction of many organs. Consequently, an episode of AHF constitutes a "multiple organ failure" which may also affect the skeletal muscles. However, the abnormalities within skeletal muscles during AHF have not been investigated so far. The aim of this project is to comprehensively evaluate skeletal muscles (at a functional and tissue level) during AHF. METHODS: The study will include ≥63 consecutive AHF patients who will be randomized into 2 groups: ≥42 with cardiac rehabilitat

Gastro-oesophageal reflux in patients with chronic rhino-sinusitis investigated with multichannel impedance - pH monitoring.

In the perinatal period the developing brain is extremely vulnerable for a variety of insults. Perinatal conditions, such as extreme prematurity, perinatal asphyxia, and their complications can lead to lifelong sensorimotor, cognitive and behavioral impairment. Prediction of long-term neurodevelopment of preterm and ill term infants at risk for brain injury at an early stage remains a big challenge. Identification of brain lesions and disturbed function is essential for an accurate diagnosis. Currently, the prediction of the outcome is based on a variety of diagnostic tools and clinical assess

Impact of hypothermia on predictors of poor outcome: how do we decide to redirect care?

Therapeutic hypothermia is now considered the standard of care for neonates with neonatal encephalopathy due to perinatal asphyxia. Outcomes following hypothermia treatment are favorable, as demonstrated in recent meta-analyses, but 45-50% of these neonates still suffer major disability or die due to global multi-organ injury or after redirection of care from life support due to severe brain injury. The ability to determine which patients are at highest risk of severe neurologic impairment and death and those in whom redirection of care should be considered is limited. This is especially true

Effects of fragrance administration on stress-induced prefrontal cortex activity and sebum secretion in the facial skin.

Although fragrances have long been known to influence stress-induced psychosomatic disorders, the neurophysiological mechanism remains unclear. We evaluated the effect of fragrance on the relation between the level of sebum secretion in the facial skin and the stress-induced prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity, which regulates the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Employing near infrared spectroscopy, we measured hemoglobin concentration changes in the bilateral PFC during a mental arithmetic task in normal adults (n=31), and evaluated asymmetry of the PFC activity in terms of

Physiological regulation of thinking: brain-computer interface (BCI) research.

The discovery of event-related desynchronization (ERD) and event-related synchronization (ERS) by Pfurtscheller paved the way for the development of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). BCIs allow control of computers or external devices with the regulation of brain activity only. Two different research traditions produced two different types of BCIs: invasive BCIs, realized with implanted electrodes in brain tissue and noninvasive BCIs using electrophysiological recordings in humans such as electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) and metabolic changes such as functional mag

Water, sulfur dioxide and nitric acid adsorption on calcium carbonate: a transmission and ATR-FTIR study.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a reactive component of mineral dust aerosol as well as buildings, statues and monuments. In this study, attenuated total reflection (ATR) and transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) have been used to study the uptake of water, sulfur dioxide and nitric acid on CaCO3 particles at 296 K. Under atmospheric conditions, CaCO3 particles are terminated by a Ca(OH)(CO3H) surface layer. In the presence of water vapor between 5 and 95% relative humidity (RH), water molecularly adsorbs on the Ca(OH)(CO3H) surface resulting in the formation of an adsorbed

Effect of temperature and concentration on the structure of tert-butyl alcohol/water mixtures: near-infrared spectroscopic study.

The effect of temperature and concentration on the structure of tert-butyl alcohol/water binary mixtures in the alcohol-rich region (X(H2O) < 0.3) has been studied by using Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy. The obtained results demonstrate that the addition of a small amount of water to tert-butyl alcohol (2-methyl-2-propanol, abbreviated as TBA) leads to minor changes in the structure of neat TBA and suggest that molecules of TBA in the mixture are in the same environment as those in pure TBA. The bands of water are red-shifted in the mixture relative to bulk water, imply

The contribution of the external carotid artery to cerebral perfusion in carotid disease.

PURPOSE: In the presence of carotid occlusion, the external carotid artery (ECA) becomes an important source of cerebral blood flow, especially if the circle of Willis is incomplete. The contribution of the ECA to hemispheric blood flow in patients with severe ipsilateral carotid stenosis has never been previously investigated. METHODS: One hundred eight patients were monitored during sequential cross-clamping of the external (ECA) and then ipsilateral internal carotid artery (ICA) during carotid endarterectomy using transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) (Neuroguard CDS, Los Angeles, Calif),
