BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a complex disease for which clear understanding of clinical manifestations is needed to avoid misd … nactivated CE4-CE5 cysts were recruited (T0). After enrollment, 5 patients with CE3b cysts received albendazole, resulting in cyst solidification (CE4) in 4/5. Within a two-year follow-up, the whole-blood test was repeated at two time-points, in ≥14 (T1) and in ≥4 (T2) patients per group. IL-4 and a panel of other soluble factors were measured in the stimulat …

We describe the successful management of Anncaliia algerae microsporidial myositis in a man with graft versus host disease after hemopoietic stem cell transplantation. We also summarize clinical presentation and management approaches and discuss the importance of research into the acquisition of this infection and strategies for prevention.

Our work represents the first case report of polycystic echinococcosis co-infection with HIV, hepatitis C virus (HCV), and hepatitis B virus (HBV). Structural liver alterations were found to be related to parasitic structures and necroinflammatory foci (karyopyknosis, karyorrhexis, and karyolysis), consistent with Echinococcus vogeli. Visceral adipose tissue and intrahepatic triglyceride droplets (macrovesicular and microvesicular steatosis) indicated abnormal fat anabolism, which probably resulted from both viral-induced hepatopathy and drug-related toxicity. In summary, our results suggest t

Gastrointestinal anisakiasis is a parasitic infection occurring in people that consume raw or inadequately cooked fish or squid. It is frequently characterized by severe epigastric pain, nausea and vomiting caused by the penetration of the larvae into the gastric wall. Acute gastric anisakiasis with severe chest discomfort is rarely reported in Italy. On the other hand, gastro-allergic anisakiasis with rash, urticaria and isolated angioedema or anaphylaxis is a clinical entity that has been described only recently. Also, if patients usually develop symptoms within 12 hours after raw seafood in

Asymptomatic eosinophilia is a common finding in returning travelers and immigrants from parasite-endemic areas. We present a 49-year-old man from Guyana who immigrated to the United States 4 years prior to examination. He had persistent asymptomatic eosinophilia, and multiple stool examinations were negative for ova and parasites. Although the list of parasitic diseases associated with eosinophilia is extensive, the differential diagnosis of asymptomatic eosinophilia with negative stool evaluations is rather limited. We discuss herein elements of the clinical history and examination essential

Hydatid disease is a rare entity primarily affecting the population of developing countries. The parasite shuttles between the liver and lungs. but almost any organ can be invaded, forming cysts. Septation and calcification of the cysts with a high antibody titre in the patient's serum confirm the diagnosis, although more sophisticated tests have been applied recently. Surgery constitutes the primary treatment, with a variety of techniques based on the principles of eradication and elimination of recurrence by means of spillage avoidance. Minimally invasive techniques and percutaneous drainage

Five groups of ten 7-month-old Romney lambs were challenged twice-weekly (2 x 3,000) with either Ostertagia circumcincta (Groups 1-3) or Trichostrongylus colubrifornzis (Groups 4 and 5) infective-stage larvae (L3) following administration of controlled release capsules (CRC) containing either albendazole (ABZ-CRC) (Groups 2 and 5) or ivermectin (IVM-CRC) (Group 3). Larval challenge comprised a mixture of equal numbers of drug-susceptible and -resistant L3 (OR/TR:OS/TS) during the 14-week period of drug release. Positive faecal egg counts (FEC) were recorded in each group during this period. Eg…

Several reports have showed Cryptosporidium species as a cause of intractable diarrhea and malabsorption in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV). A case of chronic diarrhea in a drug addict woman associated with a symptomatic interstitial pulmonary infection due to Cryptosporidium parvum is described. This unusual C. parvum spread into the bronchial tree is underlined and a survey of the literature is made.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a mosquito-transmitted parasitic disease, which is a main concern in tropical and subtropical countries. LF is the second major cause of chronic and irreversible disabilities worldwide, which include lymphoedema, hydrocele, and elephantiasis. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 882 million individuals across 44 countries were reported to be at risk of acquiring LF. The nematode Wuchereria bancrofti is the predominant pathogen which causes LF, accounting for approximately 90% of filarial infections. The drugs albendazole (ALB), ivermectin …

The patients received oral prednisolone therapy for seven days, followed by albendazole for 28 days. The swellings decreased in size and no new swellings or symptoms appeared during the two- and four-week follow-ups. At a three-month follow-up, the swellings completely resolved. BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) affects more than 120 million people globally. In Tanzania, nearly six million people are estimated to live with clinical manifestations of the disease. The National LF control program was established in 2000 using Mass drug administration (MDA) of Ivermectin and Albendazole to individuals aged 5years and above. This study assessed the infection status in individuals aged 15 years and above who are eligible for participation in MDA. The level of compliance to MDA and the reasons for non-compliance to MDA were also assessed.
METHODS: A community based cros…
