Radioimmunoassay of erythropoietin (EPO) has been used for evaluating its clinical usefulness in distinguishing polycythaemia vera (PV) from pure erythrocytosis (PE). A normal log distribution (13.40 mU/ml +/- 2.45) was observed in the 66 reference samples. Similar results were observed in 29 pure thrombocytaemias (13.23 +/- 5.19). In PV patients, whether in clinical remission or in active phase, the EPO titer was lower than normal values (respectively 7.32 +/- 3.63 and 6.59 +/- 2.75), without any correlation with the haematocrit (44 to 51% and 52 to 71%). The rare entity of periodontitis in a 4 1/2-year old child and subsequent changes over a 4-year follow-up period will be presented. Various examinations (among other immunological tests, biochemical differentiation of dermal fibroblasts, and ultrastructural skin biopsies) were made to identify whether this was a case of genuine prepuberty periodontitis or of periodontitis secondary to a general disease. On the basis of the results the case was diagnosed as Ehlers-Danlos Disease Type VIII, although at the same time signs of impaired granulocyte function were observed.

Thirty-one patients with newly diagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukemia were examined before receiving any treatment and their clinical and laboratory data were analyzed in order to determine the possible correlation between clinical presentation, morphologic sub-classes, cytochemical reactions, immunological phenotypes and cytogenetic findings. The accuracy of using panoramic radiographs as the basis for classification of impacted third molars and subsequent fee reimbursement by third party carriers was evaluated. Radiographs showing 20 impacted third molar teeth were classified independently by 40 oral and maxillofacial surgeons, 10 general dentists, and 11 health insurance consultants. No group had an accuracy rate better than approximately 50%. These findings demonstrate the unreliability of radiographs for classification of impacted teeth, irrespective of the training or experience of the evaluator.

Anatomical features exist in an area between the lower end of esophagus and the cardia portion of the stomach. Clinical features of carcinoma located at the cardia should be differentiated from carcinoma of the stomach or the esophagus. Generally, carcinoma of the cardia has been discussed together esophageal cancer or gastric cancer. However it is better to classify into 3 groups, esophagus, cardia and stomach. And it is necessary to establish the different criteria of cardial cancer. Proper statistical treatment of pertinent data will indicate this problem.

Criteria for the classification of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis were analyzed in a detailed database of 250 children in order to assess the accuracy of diagnosis and validity of onset types and course subtypes. The diagnostic value of a panel of monoclonal antibodies was assessed in 100 consecutive patients with acute leukaemia. 97 patients were clearly phenotyped. The present study classified epilepsies in Nigerians and compared them with the profile of epilepsies as found in other countries: India, France, and Denmark.
