The influence of abiotic and biotic factors on the invasion of Ixodes scapularis in Ontario, Canada.

In northeastern North America, the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, is the vector of numerous tick-borne pathogens, including the agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto. Since 1990, there has been a rapid spread of I. scapularis northward into the province of Ontario, Canada. Climate change has been implicated as one of the driving factors for the spread of this vector. Other ecological factors also influence survival of I. scapularis populations and may facilitate invasion. The objective of this study was to identify local abiotic and biotic factors of significance for

The Combined Effect of High Ambient Temperature and Antihypertensive Treatment on Renal Function in Hospitalized Elderly Patients.

BACKGROUND: The aging kidney manifests structural, functional as well as pharmacological changes, rendering elderly patients more susceptible to adverse environmental influences on their health, dehydration in particular. HYPOTHESIS: Higher temperature is associated with renal function impairment in patients 65 years and older who routinely take thiazide and/or ACE-inhibitors/ARBs. METHODS: We obtained health data of patients older than 65 who were admitted to a large tertiary center during the years 2006-2011, with a previous diagnosis of hypertension, and treated with thiazide, ACE-inhibit

Ticks and tick-borne disease systems in space and from space.

Analyses within geographical information systems (GISs) indicate that small- and large-scale ranges of hard tick species (Ixodidae) are determined more by climate and vegetation than by host-related factors. Spatial distributions of ticks may therefore be analysed by statistical methods that seek correlations between known tick presence/absence and ground- or remotely-sensed (RS) environmental factors. In this way, local habitats of Amblyomma variegatum in the Caribbean and Ixodes ricinus in Europe have been mapped using Landsat RS imagery, while regional and continental distributions of Afric

[Identification and Improvement Path of Decoupling Type of Urban Sprawl and Ecosystem Service Flow in the Yangtze River Basin, China].

The disorderly sprawl of cities leads to the spatial transmission path of ecosystem service flows being cut off, which not only hinders the sustainable development of cities but also causes serious damage to natural ecosystems. Based on the decoupling model of the elastic coefficient, a decoupling measurement model was constructed from five dimensions, namely structural dimension, density dimension, quality dimension, efficiency dimension, and morphological dimension, combined with six ecosystem service flows, namely freshwater supply, landscape aesthetics, food production, climate regulation,

The impact of carbon emission trading pilot policy on China's energy eco-efficiency.

Under the "Dual Carbon" goals (carbon peaking and carbon neutrality), China's Carbon Emissions Trading System (CETS) represents a key policy tool in addressing climate change, significantly contributing to carbon reduction and the enhancement of Energy Eco-Efficiency (EEE). As a comprehensive measure of coordination within the "energy-economy-environment" system, EEE effectively captures a country's or region's ability to harmonize energy consumption, green and sustainable development, and environmental protection. This study computes the EEE index using the SBM model and examines how a carbon

Parenting and schema domains as predictors of intuitive and dysregulated eating in emerging adults.

Emerging adulthood is a period when enduring eating patterns consolidate and guide daily food choices. This cross-sectional study examined whether perceived parenting and early maladaptive schema (EMS) domains were associated with intuitive eating, cognitive restraint, emotional eating, and uncontrolled eating among Turkish emerging adults (N = 446). Participants completed validated measures of intuitive and dysregulated eating, maternal/paternal warmth, overprotection, rejection, and five EMS domains. Hierarchical regressions entered demographics and lifestyle factors (Step 1), parenting (Ste

Deep learning model based prediction of vehicle CO2 emissions with eXplainable AI integration for sustainable environment.

The transportation industry contributes significantly to climate change through carbon dioxide ( CO 2 ) emissions, intensifying global warming and leading to more frequent and severe weather phenomena such as flooding, drought, heat waves, glacier melting, and rising sea levels. This study proposes a comprehensive approach for predicting CO 2 emissions from vehicles using deep learning techniques enhanced by eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) methods. Utilizing a dataset from the Canadian government's official open data portal, we explored the impact of various vehicle attributes on C

Modelling of potential risk areas of pertussis cases in the Philippines using bioclimatic envelopes.

OBJECTIVES: Pertussis remains a pressing public health concern in the Philippines despite being vaccine-preventable. The resurgence of the disease, driven by waning immunity, vaccine hesitancy and erratic outbreaks, underscores the need for innovative surveillance methods. Thus, this study intends to create a predictive model of potential risk areas for pertussis outbreaks in the Philippines using bioclimatic variables. METHODS: This study employs the maximum entropy algorithm to predict pertussis risk areas in the Philippines based on 19 bioclimatic variables. The occurrence data of reported

Tick species diversity and potential distribution alternation of dominant ticks under different climate scenarios in Xinjiang, China.

Ticks are a hematophagous parasite and a vector of pathogens for numerous human and animal diseases of significant importance. The expansion of tick distribution and the increased risk of tick-borne diseases due to global climate change necessitates further study of the spatial distribution trend of ticks and their potential influencing factors. This study constructed a dataset of tick species distribution in Xinjiang for 60 years based on literature database retrieval and historical data collection (January 1963-January 2023). The distribution data were extracted, corrected, and deduplicated.

Holstein heifers in desert climate: effect of coat color on physiological variables and prediction of rectal temperature.

Two hundred Holstein heifers were divided by hair coat color in black (n1 = 60), white (n2 = 62), and mixed (n3 = 78) to accomplish two objectives: (1) to compare physiological variables using an analysis of variance, and (2) to construct regression equations to predict rectal temperature. In each heifer, rectal temperature (RT), respiration frequency (RF), and body surface temperatures (obtained with infrared thermography in eye, nose, forehead, head, neck, ear, shoulder, flank, belly, leg, loin, rump, and vulva) were measured. Black heifers had more RF and RT (P < 0.01) than mixed and white

Long-term air pollution exposure and COVID-19 case-severity: An analysis of individual-level data from Switzerland.

Several studies are pointing out that exposure to elevated air pollutants could contribute to increased COVID-19 mortality. However, literature on the associations between air pollution exposure and COVID-19 severe morbidity is rather sparse. In addition, the majority of the studies used an ecological study design and were applied in regions with rather high air pollution levels. Here, we study the differential effects of long-term exposure to air pollution on severe morbidity and mortality risks from COVID-19 in various population subgroups in Switzerland, a country known for clean air. We pe

Escalating the conflict? Intersex genetic correlations influence adaptation to environmental change in facultatively migratory populations.

Males and females are often subject to different and even opposing selection pressures. When a given trait has a shared genetic basis between the sexes, sexual conflict (antagonism) can arise. This can result in significant individual-level fitness consequences that might also affect population performance, whilst anthropogenic environmental change can further exacerbate maladaptation in one or both sexes driven by sexual antagonism. Here, we develop a genetically explicit eco-evolutionary model using an agent-based framework to explore how a population of a facultatively migratory fish specie

Yellow fever in Asia-a risk analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is concern about the risk of yellow fever (YF) establishment in Asia, owing to rising numbers of urban outbreaks in endemic countries and globalisation. Following an outbreak in Angola in 2016, YF cases were introduced into China. Prior to this, YF had never been recorded in Asia, despite climatic suitability and the presence of mosquitoes. An outbreak in Asia could result in widespread fatalities and huge economic impact. Therefore, quantifying the potential risk of YF outbreaks in Asia is a public health priority. METHODS: Using international flight data and YF incidence e

Do anthropogenic transports facilitate stored-product pest moth dispersal? A molecular approach.

Stored-product moths cause large economic damage in food processing industries and storage facilities. Control of indoor pests is currently dealt with locally, and control strategies seldom include different mills or cooperative industries in joint efforts to reduce infestations. In colder climates where conditions hinder flight dispersal of stored-product moths, we hypothesize that human transport between mills will facilitate dispersal. Albeit considered intuitive, this hypothesis has so far never been tested. Male moths from three mills (populations) in southern Sweden and Denmark were coll

Evidence for protein degradation by Botrytis cinerea and relationships with alteration of synthetic wine foaming properties.

Botrytis cinerea is an important fungal pathogen particularly dreaded in the cool climate vineyard. It is responsible for important damage, especially the decrease in foamability of sparkling wines, such as Champagne. Different studies have shown that proteins are largely involved in the stabilization of Champagne foam despite their low concentration. Other works demonstrated changes in the electrophoretic characteristics of must proteins originating from botrytized grapes, although the cause of such alterations was never explained. In the first part of this study, results showed the release b
