Imaging features of a brown tumor with extensive skull involvement: Relevance for dental radiology.

This case report describes a rare, asymptomatic brown tumor in a patient with end-stage renal disease. The lesion was incidentally detected during a computed tomography (CT) scan of the paranasal sinuses, performed upon a dentist's recommendation to investigate maxillary sinusitis. CT imaging revealed an expansive osteolytic lesion with irregular margins and a ground-glass appearance involving the left side of the sphenoid and frontal sinuses. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with multiplanar T1 and T2-weighted sequences without contrast demonstrated a solid tissue-like expansive le

Computational studies on a selection of phosphite esters as antioxidants for polymeric materials.

CONTEXT: Phosphite esters, a class of organo-phosphorus compounds, are widely used as non-discolouring antioxidants in many polymeric products. Apart from normal radical scavenging, they prevent the splitting of hydroperoxides (ROOH), one of the initial products of autoxidation, from forming extremely reactive free radicals such as alkoxy (RO.) and hydroxy (.OH) radicals. The inherent molecular properties of antioxidants and the chemistry of their action are essential for researchers working in this field of science. Four organo-phosphorous compounds well-known for their antioxidant activity a

Reproducing Patient-Specific Hemodynamics in the Blalock-Taussig Circulation Using a Flexible Multi-Domain Simulation Framework: Applications for Optimal Shunt Design.

For babies born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, several open-heart surgeries are required. During Stage I, a Norwood procedure is performed to construct an appropriate circulation to both the systemic and the pulmonary arteries. The pulmonary arteries receive flow from the systemic circulation, often using a Blalock-Taussig (BT) shunt between the innominate artery and the right pulmonary artery. This procedure causes significantly disturbed flow in the pulmonary arteries. In this study, we use computational hemodynamic simulations to demonstrate its capacity for examining the properties

[Extraction of orbital foreign bodies using a new kind of image processing system].

We present a new localization system in orbital surgery. The procedure is based on the linkage of two methods. A preoperative thin-layer CT scan is taken and the image data are fed into a high-capacity computer which computes a three-dimensional model of the orbit. Intraoperatively, the volume model of the skull is linked to a mechanical arm for position measurement. Surgical instruments can be mounted to this arm. The computer then projects the position of the instrument into the volume model of the orbit, so that the surgeon can follow the movements of his instruments on the monitor. The sur

Delayed presentation of partial anomalous systemic venous connection.

Anomalies of systemic venous connections are extremely rare. We describe the case of an asymptomatic 29-year-old woman who was found to have systemic desaturation in the peripartum period and referred to us for suspected cyanotic heart disease. She was diagnosed to have hemianomalous systemic venous connection of the inferior vena cava (IVC) into the left atrium (LA). Transesophageal echocardiogram with contrast diagnosed anomalous connection of the IVC to the LA, further confirmed by computed tomography and conventional angiography. The patient underwent successful surgical correction with an

Wegener's granulomatosis complicated by central diabetes insipidus and peripheral neutrophy with normal pituitary in a patient.

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a necrotizing systemic vasculitis that any organ system can be involved in. We report a patient who was hospitalized with recurrent nodules in pulmonary computed tomograph and symptoms such as intermitted fever, polydipsia, insensibility and pain on extremities. Laboratory investigation showed positive antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody in a cytoplastic pattern. The histopathologic result of the lung nodule revealed multiloci necrosis of lung tissue accompanied with large amount of neutrophils. She was diagnosed as WG with multi-systemic involvements and almos

Craniospinal involvement in a patient with isolated bone marrow mastocytosis. A case report.

Central nervous system involvement in systemic mastocytosis (SM) is very rare. This case report describes the computed tomography and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of central nervous system involvement in a patient with isolated bone marrow mastocystosis. Bone marrow infiltration in SM caused cranial nerve dysfunction and meningeal irritation secondary to narrowing of cranial apertures and meningeal involvement, respectively. MR imaging is the modality of choice in both detection and follow-up of SM and also useful for differential diagnosis and detection of complications.

Percutaneous laser discectomy guided with stereotactic computer-assisted surgical navigation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Percutaneous laser discectomy at various wavelengths has been used for minimally invasive surgery of herniated intervertebral discs. Using a high-intensity diode laser at 980-nm wavelength, we aimed to improve the safe insertion of the laser trocar with the aid of a stereotactic computer-assisted surgical navigation system. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: The experiments were performed on ex vivo porcine spines with intact soft tissue. Before laser irradiation, each specimen was imaged by computed tomography (CT) with fiduciary markers. The Digital Imaging and Co

An empirical study and evolutionary game analysis of computing power factors promoting enterprise green investment.

Corporate green investment plays an important role in industrial decarbonization, but the influence of computing power on firms' investment incentives remains insufficiently understood, particularly with respect to collaboration across enterprises and the allocation of risks and returns. This study combines a tripartite evolutionary game model with panel analysis at the firm level. The model describes strategic interactions among providers of computing power services, enterprises in heavily polluting industries, and enterprises in other industries. It examines how computing power changes proje

A graphical user interface for wrmXpress 2.0 streamlines helminth phenotypic screening.

Image-based phenotypic screening is a fundamental technique used to better understand the basic biology of helminths and advance discovery of new anthelmintics. Miniaturization of screening platforms and automated microscopy have led to a surge in imaging data and necessitated software to organize and analyze these data. Traditionally, these analyses are performed remotely on high-performance computers, often requiring an understanding of a command line interface (CLI) and the ability to write scripts to control the software or job scheduler. Requiring access to specialized computing equipment

Computer hardware for radiologists: Part 2.

Computers are an integral part of modern radiology equipment. In the first half of this two-part article, we dwelt upon some fundamental concepts regarding computer hardware, covering components like motherboard, central processing unit (CPU), chipset, random access memory (RAM), and memory modules. In this article, we describe the remaining computer hardware components that are of relevance to radiology. "Storage drive" is a term describing a "memory" hardware used to store data for later retrieval. Commonly used storage drives are hard drives, floppy drives, optical drives, flash drives, and

A fuzzy cognitive map hierarchical model for differential diagnosis of dysarthrias and apraxia of speech.

This paper presents a novel soft computing system for differential diagnosis of the dysarthrias and apraxia of speech based on well accepted dysarthrias' classification system used by speech and language pathologists. The dysarthrias and apraxia are complex disorders of speech because they represent a variety of neurological disturbances that can potentially affect every component of speech production. Since an accurate diagnosis is a very challenging task for the clinician, the under development system based on hierarchical Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) will be used as a "second opinion" or tra

Grading hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in neonatal EEG with convolutional neural networks and quadratic time-frequency distributions.

Objective. To develop an automated system to classify the severity of hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy injury (HIE) in neonates from the background electroencephalogram (EEG).Approach. By combining a quadratic time-frequency distribution (TFD) with a convolutional neural network, we develop a system that classifies 4 EEG grades of HIE. The network learns directly from the two-dimensional TFD through 3 independent layers with convolution in the time, frequency, and time-frequency directions. Computationally efficient algorithms make it feasible to transform each 5 min epoch to the time-frequency

A Diazo-Hooker Reaction, Inspired by the Biosynthesis of Azamerone.

Motivated by the biosynthesis of azamerone, we report the first example of a diazo-Hooker reaction, which involves the formation of a phthalazine ring system by the oxidative rearrangement of a diazoketone. Computational studies indicate that the diazo-Hooker reaction proceeds via an 8π-electrocyclization followed by ring contraction and aromatization. The biosynthetic origin of the diazoketone functional group was also chemically mimicked using a related natural product, naphterpin, as a model system.

Changes in regional cerebral blood flow after a cold hand test in systemic lupus erythematosus patients with Raynaud's syndrome.

The appearance of vasospastic features in the central nervous system (CNS) after a cold stressor test was Investigated through single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) of regional cerebral blood flow in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, with and without Raynaud's syndrome, and in scleroderma patients. We have shown that Raynaud's syndrome may occur in the CNS and that anticardiolipin or lupus anticoagulant positivity may favour perfusion defects.

Quantitative measurement of cervical range of motion in patients with torticollis treated with botulinum A toxin.

Improvement in cervical range of motion in patients with spasmodic torticollis by botulinum A toxin injection is difficult to objectively measure. Recently, a three-dimensional cervical range of motion system (EMROM) that measures primary as well as secondary cervical angles has been developed. This system uses an electromagnetic tracking system for data collection and a personal computer for analysis and graphic display of the data. We have tested the EMROM system and, from our results, believe that it can be used clinically to objectively and accurately measure cervical range of motion in pa

3D-Printed Guides, Navigation, and Robotic Assistance in Spinal Instrumentation: A Network Meta-Analysis of Pedicle Screw Accuracy and Clinical Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Accurate pedicle screw placement is essential to prevent neurovascular injury, revision surgery, and excess healthcare costs. While navigation and robotic systems enhance accuracy over freehand or fluoroscopic techniques, they remain limited by high cost and patient radiation exposure. Three-dimensional printed (3DP) patient-specific guides offer comparable accuracy with potentially reduced intraoperative time and radiation. PURPOSE: To compare the accuracy, safety, and operative efficiency of 3DP- guides (3DPG) with navigation (NAV) and robotic-assisted (RA) platforms for pedicle
