Major and lethal complications of liposuction: a review of 72 cases in Germany between 1998 and 2002.

BACKGROUND: Liposuction is the most frequently performed cosmetic operation in Germany, with approximately 200,000 procedures performed in 2003. The public perception of liposuction as minor surgery fails to consider the potential of major complications or a possibly fatal outcome. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of severe or lethal complications related to cosmetic liposuction is presented. To collect pertinent information, the authors sent 3500 questionnaires to departments of pathology and forensic medicine, intensive care units, and others. After the identification of cases with major c

[A collective review of Vibrio vulnificus infection in Japan].

Vibrio vulnificus is found globally in marine coastal waters. Infection with this organism, via ingestion of raw shellfish or exposure to marine water, can cause necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis, which have high mortality and short latency. In Japan, many cases have been reported since 1980, mainly from hospitals in western prefectures. However, because of the sporadic nature of infection outbreaks, a thorough epidemiologic survey has not been done. We studied the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of Vibrio vulnificus infections reported in Japan from 1975 to 2005. We identified 185

Molecular characterization of clinical isolates of M non-typable group A streptococci from invasive disease cases.

Currently there are 93 validated M serotypes of Streptococcus pyogenes, Lancefield group A streptococcus (GAS), and >130 emm genotypes. A marked increase in the number of non-typable GAS isolates (2 % in 2000, 4 % in 2001 and 9 % in 2002) from invasive disease cases referred to the authors' reference laboratory was noted during 2000-2002. A total of 217 (92 %) were from blood cultures, 14 (6 %) from deep abscesses and five (2 %) from aspirates. The clinical manifestations included bacteraemia, septicaemia, cellulitis, meningitis, necrotizing fasciitis and toxic-shock syndrome. In order to esta

Wound infections caused by Vibrio vulnificus and other marine bacteria.

Infections caused by Vibrio vulnificus were first reported in 1979 by Blake et al. of the US Centers for Disease Control. At that time described as a 'rare, unnamed halophilic lactose-fermenting Vibrio species', V. vulnificus has emerged as the most virulent foodborne pathogen in the United States with a hospitalization rate of 0.910 and a case-fatality rate of 0.390. It is in addition a significant cause of potentially life-threatening wound infections. Infections following ingestion of raw or undercooked seafood, commonly raw oysters, can lead to a primary septicaemia with a fatality rate of

Intra-abdominal packing for uncontrollable haemorrhage during ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

OBJECTIVE: Intra-abdominal packing is a valuable adjunct in patients with abdominal trauma and uncontrollable bleeding but few data exist regarding early and late outcome associated with this technique in patients with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). METHODS: Interrogation of a prospective vascular surgical database identified 23 patients (22 men; median age 69, range 59-82, years) with ruptured AAA who required intra-abdominal packing for control of coagulopathic haemorrhage after insertion of an aortic graft between January 1982 and December 2003. Co-morbidity, operative and outco

Transcriptional activation of sclA by Mga requires a distal binding site in Streptococcus pyogenes.

Streptococcus pyogenes (the group A streptococcus [GAS]) is a medically significant pathogen of humans, causing a range of diseases from pharyngitis to necrotizing fasciitis. Several important GAS virulence genes are under the control of a pleiotropic regulator called Mga, or the multiple gene regulator of GAS, including the gene encoding the streptococcal collagen-like protein, or sclA. Analysis of the genome sequence upstream of sclA revealed two potential Mga-binding sites with homology to the published Mga-binding element, which were called PsclA-I (distal) and PsclA-II (proximal) based on

Management of Invasive Group A Streptococcal Infections in Children: The European Society for Pediatric Infectious Disease Guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) infections in children, although rare, are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and their incidence has risen globally in recent years. Evidence for optimal management in children is limited. These guidelines aim to provide evidence-based recommendations for the management of pediatric iGAS, including antibiotic therapy, adjunctive nonantibiotic therapies and prophylaxis of close contacts. METHODS: The ESPID Guidelines Committee convened a multidisciplinary working group. A systematic literature search of pediatric studies publ

Clindamycin and intravenous immunoglobulins in pediatric invasive group A streptococcal disease: what is the evidence?

Invasive group A streptococcal disease (iGAS) can present with severe manifestations, including sepsis, necrotizing fasciitis, and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. Although β-lactam antibiotics are considered standard therapy, the role of adjunctive treatments, particularly clindamycin and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), in children with these severe manifestations remains debated. Clindamycin is effective irrespective of pathogen load and is suggested to inhibit toxin production, while IVIG is hypothesized to modulate the immune response through multiple mechanisms, including neutraliza

Field-Deployable Paper-Based Detection of Vibrio vulnificus via Mechanically Automated Sequential RPA/CRISPR-Cas12a.

Vibrio vulnificus (V. vulnificus) is a highly virulent marine pathogen that causes severe infections, including sepsis and necrotizing fasciitis, with high fatality rates in susceptible individuals. Rapid and sensitive on-site detection is therefore essential, yet existing methods often depend on laboratory-based equipment and trained personnel, limiting field applicability. Here, we present an automated, paper-based RPA/CRISPR-Cas12a diagnostic platform that integrates a microfluidic paper pad with a spiral-spring-driven mechanical actuator. The device enables sequential execution of recombin

Bacteria Causing Skin Abscesses in French Guiana, Amazonian Zone.

Cutaneous abscesses are the most common skin infections in Amazonia; however, data on the infectious agents in this tropical region are scarce. The humid and hot climate of the Amazon region, coupled with exposure to environmental contaminants from aquatic, telluric, plant, insect, and animal sources, could modify the infectious agents responsible for skin abscesses, which are largely dominated by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in temperate regions. A retrospective monocentric study was conducted from January 1, 2023 to January 15, 2024. Any patient over 18 years of age admitted to the Surg

Frequency, geographical distribution, clinical characteristics, antivenom utilisation and outcomes of King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) bites in Malaysia.

Snakebite envenomation remains an important, yet a neglected public health issue in most tropical and subtropical countries. Underdeveloped medical infrastructure, suboptimal medical services, poor documentation and failure to make snake-related injury a mandatory notifiable disease are important contributing factors. The King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is a medically significant species encountered in Malaysia however, there have been few publications from the clinical perspective. The objectives of this study were to determine the frequency of King Cobra related injuries, geographical distri

Integrated computer-aided drug design and biophysical simulation approaches to determine natural anti-bacterial compounds for Acinetobacter baumannii.

Acinetobacter baumannii is a nosocomial bacterial pathogen and is responsible for a wide range of diseases including pneumonia, necrotizing fasciitis, meningitis, and sepsis. The enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate (EPSP) synthase (encoded by aroA gene) in ESKAPE pathogens catalyzes the sixth step of shikimate pathway. The shikimate pathway is an attractive drug targets pathway as it is present in bacteria but absent in humans. As EPSP is essential for the A. baumannii growth and needed during the infection process, therefore it was used as a drug target herein for high-throughput screen
