The effective population size (Ne ) is a fundamental parameter in population genetics that determines the relative strength of selection and random genetic drift, the effect of migration, levels of inbreeding, and linkage disequilibrium. In many cases where it has been estimated in animals, Ne is on the order of 10%-20% of the census size. In this study, we use 12 microsatellite markers and 14,888 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to empirically estimate Ne in Aedes aegypti, the major vector of yellow fever, dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses. We used the method of temporal sampling to

Correct orientation of cell division is considered an important factor for the achievement of normal brain size, as mutations in genes that affect this process are among the leading causes of microcephaly. Abnormal spindle orientation is associated with reduction of the neuronal progenitor symmetric divisions, premature cell cycle exit, and reduced neurogenesis. This mechanism has been involved in microcephaly resulting from mutation of ASPM, the most frequently affected gene in autosomal recessive human primary microcephaly (MCPH), but it is presently unknown how ASPM regulates spindle orient

The importance of fire in human evolutionary history is widely acknowledged but the extent not fully explored. Fires involve flickering light, crackling sounds, warmth, and a distinctive smell. For early humans, fire likely extended the day, provided heat, helped with hunting, warded off predators and insects, illuminated dark places, and facilitated cooking. Campfires also may have provided social nexus and relaxation effects that could have enhanced prosocial behavior. According to this hypothesis, calmer, more tolerant people would have benefited in the social milieu via fireside interactio

Deciphering the principles how pathogenic bacteria adapt their metabolism to a specific host microenvironment is critical for understanding bacterial pathogenesis. The enteric pathogenic Yersinia species Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and Yersinia enterocolitica and the causative agent of plague, Yersinia pestis, are able to survive in a large variety of environmental reservoirs (e.g., soil, plants, insects) as well as warm-blooded animals (e.g., rodents, pigs, humans) with a particular preference for lymphatic tissues. In order to manage rapidly changing environmental conditions and interbacteri

Individual, naturally occurring Phlebotomus mongolensis and Phlebotomus caucasicus from Iran were screened for infections with the maternally inherited intracellular Rickettsia-like bacterium Wolbachia pipientis via targeting a major surface protein gene (wsp). The main objective of this study was to determine if W. pipientis could be detected in these species. The sandflies were screened using polymerase chain reaction to amplify a fragment of the Wolbachia surface protein gene. The obtained sequences were edited and aligned with database sequences to identify W. pipientis haplotypes. Two str

Alphaviruses are arthropod-borne pathogens that infect a range of hosts. In humans and other mammals, alphavirus infection can cause severe disease. In mosquito hosts, however, there are generally few symptoms. Little is known about the cellular responses of mosquitoes that allow them to cope with infection. In this investigation, a six-plex tandem mass tagging proteomic approach was used to study protein accumulation changes in the midgut of Anopheles gambiae (Giles) (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquitoes infected with o'nyong-nyong virus (Togaviridae, Alphavirus). Five hundred thirty-six nonredunda

Culex mosquitoes introduce the pathogens responsible for filariasis, West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis, and other diseases into humans. Currently, traps baited with oviposition semiochemicals play an important role in detection efforts and could provide an environmentally friendly approach to controlling their populations. The odorant binding proteins (OBPs) in the female's antenna play a crucial, if yet imperfectly understood, role in sensing oviposition cues. Here, we report the X-ray crystallography and NMR 3D structures of OBP1 for Culex quinquefasciatus (CquiOBP1) bound to an ovipos

A novel crustacean toxin (Cn11) was isolated and characterized from the venom of the Mexican scorpion Centruroides noxius Hoffmann. It contains 63 amino acid residues and is stabilized by four disulphide bridges. It is lethal to crustaceans (Cambarellus montezumae), less toxic to insects (crickets) and non-toxic to mammals (mice) at the doses assayed. In neurons isolated from the X organ-sinus gland system of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii, it blocks the Na(+) currents with an estimated K(m) of 320 nmol l(-1), without affecting the Ca(2+) and K(+) currents. The voltage-gated tetrodotoxin-sen

"The student who intends working on the Mallophaga should take warning that he will be tried almost beyond endurance by the paradoxes and complexities which beset his subject but he will also find, in the dual and inter-related aspect of insect and bird, an infinite fascination." (Rothschild & Clay, 1952: pp. 156-157). The study of host louse coevolution will benefit greatly from the phylogenetic perspective offered by recent advantages in molecular systematics. However, in order to make best use of phylogenies we need to appreciate the complexities of the possible relations between host and p

Ivermectin is a macrocyclic lactone (fermentation) product and actinomycete (Streptomyces avermitilis) that possesses an unusually broad spectrum of potent activity against several species of nematodes, arachnids, and insects that parasitize domestic animals. From clinical trials in humans it has been found to be microfilaricidal, killing microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus (the parasite causing onchocerciasis), and interrupting its transmission by the black fly vector. Dermal microfilariae density in patients are reduced to near zero levels for 6-12 months after a single oral dose of ivermec

Inspired by the evolutionary diversification of biological eyes for environmental adaptation, recently emerged artificial counterparts offer a variety of visual features that can emulate the eyes of humans, insects, fish, eagles, cats, and others. However, grand challenges reside in developing transformational artificial pupils to address drastic environmental change. Here, we propose a bioinspired vision system that integrates a hemispherical imaging array as an artificial retina with liquid-metal shape-shifters as visual neurons and an adaptive artificial pupil to comprehensively simulate vi

Culicoides biting midges are small blood feeding insects responsible for the transmission of important arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) such as bluetongue virus (BTV), Schmallenberg virus (SBV) and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV), which cause major losses to livestock production worldwide. Culicoides sonorensis is the primary vector of BTV in North America and one of the few Culicoides species to be colonised and reared in artificial conditions. Gene editing technology has been used to explore virus-vector interactions in other vector groups, particularly within mosquitoes. Des

Mayflies and other aquatic insects are considered key species in environmental risk assessments of pesticides, particularly due to their sensitivity to neonicotinoids. While toxicity tests of pesticides are often conducted under laboratory controlled conditions, these organisms under environmentally relevant scenarios face numerous variable environmental factors including food availability, temperature, and chemical exposure. To investigate the influence of these environmental factors on toxicity, we developed Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) based toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic (TKTD) models for Chir

Wing loading is a metric of flight performance that captures the relationship between body mass and wing area and reflects how much weight each unit of wing surface supports during flight. Comparative studies have documented substantial differences in wing loading among individuals and across species. However, no study has evaluated the extent of this variation when species are reared under identical, controlled conditions. Here, we address that gap by measuring wing loading in 30 species of drosophilids raised in a common lab environment. We applied comparative phylogenetic methods to assess

Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) and Bactrocera correcta (Bezzi) are two globally concerning quarantine pests within the genus Bactrocera (Tephritidae). Both species inflict severe damage on the agricultural industry and international export trade. Their distribution range has expanded due to global warming, posing an increasing threat to fruit production. Heat shock proteins (HSPs), functioning as molecular chaperones, are known to contribute to temperature adaptation in insects. However, the cold adaptation regulatory mechanisms in these two Bactrocera species remain unclear. In this study, eIF4

Tyramine (TA) is an important biogenic amine present in the central nervous system of insects, and mediates a variety of physiological and behavioral functions via tyramine receptors (TARs). However, TARs have not yet been characterized in planthoppers, and their physiological functions remain poorly understood in rice pests. Here, we cloned a tyramine receptor gene (LsTAR2) from the small brown planthopper Laodelphax striatellus, one of the most destructive rice pests. LsTAR2 shares high sequence identity with its orthologous receptors, and is closely related to its corresponding receptor gro

Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) are important for insects to discriminate, bind and transport odorants, such as pheromones and host plant volatiles. Herein, the Minus-C OBP (CbuqOBP1) was characterized from Cyrtotrachelus buqueti, one of the most important pests in bamboo plantations. CbuqOBP1 showed significantly higher transcription levels in the adult stage and was most highly expressed in the head of both sexes, the thorax and antenna of the male, indicating that it plays important roles in chemosensory behavior of adults and may also function in other biological processes. Leishmaniasis is difficult to control due to clinical and vector diversity associated with the complex life cycle of Leishmania parasites, which are transmitted by sandflies. This study investigated the presence of Leishmania DNA in sandfly vectors, their blood meal sources, and their distribution in relation to environmental and climatic variables in four municipalities in Piauí state, Brazil. Between 2020 and 2022, sandflies were collected, morphologically identified, and analyzed for the presence of parasite DNA and blood meal sources (PCR, sequencing). Climate data were correlated with the

Mechanical grasping and holding devices depend upon a firm and controlled grip. The possibility to improve this gripping performance is severely limited by the need for miniaturization in many applications, such as robotics, microassembly, or surgery. In this paper, we show how this gripping can be improved in one application (the endoscopic needle holder) by understanding and imitating the design principles that evolution has selected to make the mandibles of an ant a powerful natural gripping device. State-of-the-art kinematic, morphological, and engineering approaches show that the ant, in

Temperature is a critical factor shaping physiology, life cycle, and behaviour of ectothermic vector insects, as well as the development and multiplication of pathogens within them. However, the influence of pathogen infections on thermal preferences (behavioural thermoregulation) is not well-understood. The present study examined the thermal preferences of mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti and Ae. japonicus) infected with either Sindbis virus (SINV) or Dirofilaria immitis over 12 days post exposure (p.e.) or injected with a non-pathogenic Sephadex bead over 24 h in a thermal gradient (15-30 °C).
