Fast deep neural correspondence for tracking and identifying neurons in C. elegans using semi-synthetic training.

We present an automated method to track and identify neurons in C. elegans, called 'fast Deep Neural Correspondence' or fDNC, based on the transformer network architecture. The model is trained once on empirically derived semi-synthetic data and then predicts neural correspondence across held-out real animals. The same pre-trained model both tracks neurons across time and identifies corresponding neurons across individuals. Performance is evaluated against hand-annotated datasets, including NeuroPAL (Yemini et al., 2021). Using only position information, the method achieves 79.1% accuracy at t

Determining similarities of COVID-19 - lung cancer drugs and affinity binding mode analysis by graph neural network-based GEFA method.

COVID-19 is a worldwide health crisis seriously endangering the arsenal of antiviral and antibiotic drugs. It is urgent to find an effective antiviral drug against pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars-Cov-2), which increases global health concerns. As it can be expensive and time-consuming to develop specific antiviral drugs, reuse of FDA-approved drugs that provide an opportunity to rapidly distribute effective therapeutics can allow to provide treatments with known preclinical, pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and toxicity profiles that can quickly enter in clinical

Recognition of chronic renal failure based on Raman spectroscopy and convolutional neural network.

PURPOSE: Chronic renal failure (CRF) is a disease with a high morbidity rate that can develop into uraemia, resulting in a series of complications, such as dyspnoea, mental disorders, hypertension, and heart failure. CRF may be controlled clinically by drug intervention. Therefore, early diagnosis and control of the disease are of great significance for the treatment and prevention of chronic renal failure. Based on the complexity of CRF diagnosis, this study aims to explore a new rapid and noninvasive diagnostic method. METHODS: In this experiment, the serum Raman spectra of samples from 47

Oscillatory neural network alterations in young people with tuberous sclerosis complex and associations with co-occurring symptoms of autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic disorder caused by mutations on the TSC1/TSC2 genes, which result in alterations in molecular signalling pathways involved in neurogenesis and hamartomas in the brain and other organs. TSC carries a high risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), although the reasons for this are unclear. One proposal is that TSC-related alterations in molecular signalling during neurogenesis lead to atypical development of neural networks, which are involved in the occurrence of ASD and ADHD in TSC. We investigated

Rapid identification of pathogens by using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and multi-scale convolutional neural network.

Salmonella is a prevalent pathogen causing serious morbidity and mortality worldwide. There are over 2600 serovars of Salmonella. Among them, Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Salmonella Paratyphi were reported to be the most common foodborne pathogenic serovars in the EU and China. In order to provide a more efficient approach to detect and distinguish these serovars, a new analytical method was developed by combining surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with multi-scale convolutional neural network (CNN). We prepared 34-nm gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as the label-free

Deep Learning-Based Positioning of Visually Impaired People in Indoor Environments.

Wayfinding and navigation can present substantial challenges to visually impaired (VI) people. Some of the significant aspects of these challenges arise from the difficulty of knowing the location of a moving person with enough accuracy. Positioning and localization in indoor environments require unique solutions. Furthermore, positioning is one of the critical aspects of any navigation system that can assist a VI person with their independent movement. The other essential features of a typical indoor navigation system include pathfinding, obstacle avoidance, and capabilities for user interact

Development of a neural network based control algorithm for powered ankle prosthesis.

Lower limb amputation is partial or complete removal of the limb due to disease, accident or trauma. Surface electromyograms (sEMG) of a large number of muscles and force sensors have been used to develop control algorithms for lower limb powered prostheses, but there are no commercial sEMG controlled prostheses available to date. Unlike ankle disarticulation, transtibial amputation yields less intact lower leg muscle mass. Therefore, minimizing the use of sEMG muscle sources utilized will make powered prosthesis controller economic, and limiting the use of specifically the lower leg muscles w

Learning fine-grained estimation of physiological states from coarse-grained labels by distribution restoration.

Due to its importance in clinical science, the estimation of physiological states (e.g., the severity of pathological tremor) has aroused growing interest in machine learning community. While the physiological state is a continuous variable, its continuity is lost when the physiological state is quantized into a few discrete classes during recording and labeling. The discreteness introduces misalignment between the true value and its label, meaning that these labels are unfortunately imprecise and coarse-grained. Most previous work did not consider the inaccuracy and directly utilized the coar

Bed-Exit Prediction Applying Neural Network Combining Bed Position Detection and Patient Posture Estimation.

The work of a nurse involves tasks that can lead to serious accidents with a single mistake or miss, and thus nurses are exposed to high stress. In particular, injections, pre-medications, tube connections, and falling are factors that lead to serious accidents and are considered a major part of the load of nursing work. To reduce the burden of nursing work, we are working on developing a sensing system to prevent fall accidents. Because fall accidents tend to occur when elderly people, whose lower limb muscle strength has declined, go to the toilet, we use a camera image to detect the end pos

Attenuation of tetracyclines during chicken manure and bagasse co-composting: Degradation, kinetics, and artificial neural network modeling.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using a locally abundant bulking material (bagasse) in the composting process to remove tetracycline from chicken manure in Khuzestan Province, Iran. Degradation extent and kinetic of three types of tetracycline (tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), chlortetracycline (CTC), and oxytetracycline (OTC)) during co-composting of chicken manure and bagasse were investigated. After 56 days of incubation in the dark and room temperature, TCH, CTC, and OTC were removed up to 99.0%, 99.3%, and 99.5%, respectively. Highest Tetracyclines

Comparative study of four time series methods in forecasting typhoid fever incidence in China.

Accurate incidence forecasting of infectious disease is critical for early prevention and for better government strategic planning. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of different forecasting methods based on the monthly incidence of typhoid fever. The seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model and three different models inspired by neural networks, namely, back propagation neural networks (BPNN), radial basis function neural networks (RBFNN), and Elman recurrent neural networks (ERNN) were compared. The differences as well as the advantages and disadvantages

Artificial Neural Networks, and Evolutionary Algorithms as a systems biology approach to a data-base on fetal growth restriction.

One of the specific aims of systems biology is to model and discover properties of cells, tissues and organisms functioning. A systems biology approach was undertaken to investigate possibly the entire system of intra-uterine growth we had available, to assess the variables of interest, discriminate those which were effectively related with appropriate or restricted intrauterine growth, and achieve an understanding of the systems in these two conditions. The Artificial Adaptive Systems, which include Artificial Neural Networks and Evolutionary Algorithms lead us to the first analyses. These an

The role of iron in metal-metal interactions in hard tissues of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.).

INTRODUCTION: The toxicity of heavy metals in humans and animals has been attributed to their potential for accumulation in solid tissues and interference with other vitally important elements present in the body. We have devised this study to determine the content of some metals in bone and to determine with the Statistica Neural Networks program whether the content of one metal has any effect on the content of other metals. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our material consisted of mandibles obtained from deer aged 2 to 6 years. Using a dental drill, pulverized bone was obtained for measurements of ca

Hemispheric dissociation and dyslexia in a computational model of reading.

There are several causal explanations for dyslexia, drawing on distinctions between dyslexics and control groups at genetic, biological, or cognitive levels of description. However, few theories explicitly bridge these different levels of description. In this paper, we review a long-standing theory that some dyslexics' reading impairments are due to impairments in hemispheric transfer. We test this theory in a computational model of reading, implementing anatomical features of the visual system. We demonstrate that, when callosal transfer is impaired, the model reads nonwords as well as an uni
