Lesions of the upper extremity, particularly of the hand, are common in congenital insensitivity syndromes. Five cases are described with findings including fractures, infections, stiffness of fingers, self-mutilation, and traumatic amputations. The best form of treatment is preventative, since reconstructive surgery has little to offer. If conservative efforts are of no avail, amputation of the part is, unfortunately, the best way to obtain satisfactory results.

Cystic lesions, greater than 8 mm in diameter, were found in 16 of 183 surgically excised parotid glands over an 8 yr period. Of these 16 cysts, 9 had developed in parotid neoplasms, usually of Warthin type. The remaining 7 were not associated with neoplasms and 5 were unilocular. The epithelial lining of non-neoplastic cysts was squamous in all but one case, and there was lymphoid tissue in the walls of 3 cysts. Twenty opioids have been subdivided into four classes by using flurothyl-induced seizures in rats to measure dose-response relationships, stereospecificity, naloxone sensitivity, and tolerance-cross-tolerance. The data support current theories of multiple opiate receptor types. Since the receptors involved mediate effects that are antagonized, enhanced, or unaffected by naloxone, the model is uniquely suitable for detecting novel narcotic antagonists that can then be used to differentiate opiate receptors in other systems.

Ultrasonographic examination of the upper urinary tract in 109 asymptomatic pregnant women was performed to determine the degree of dilatation, the time of onset, and the range of "physiologic" changes detectable by this method. Classification is established and prevalence and degree of dilatation are categorized by trimesters. Nineteen patients with polycystic disease of the ovary have been studied. From the humoral point of view the group was found to consist of two populations distinguishable from one another by their basal LH levels. In type I cases LH was definitely increased (M = 53.46 +/- 12.79 mIU/ml) whereas FSH (M = 8.10 +/- 0.74 mIU/ml), prolactin (M = 10.48 +/- 2.12 ng/ml), 17beta-estradiol (M = 124.76 +/- 11.21 pg/ml), progesterone (M = 0.321 +/- 0.078 ng/ml) were all within the normal range for the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. Fiftythree patients with progressive systemic sclerosis were studied. Four of them (3 males) had the diffuse form of the disease.
