Exposome and basal cell carcinoma: a multicenter case-control study.

BACKGROUND: While ultraviolet radiation (UVR) present in sunlight is recognized as the main etiological agent of skin cancer, the most frequent form of which is basal cell carcinoma (BCC), other exposome factors like pollution, diet, and lifestyle may also contribute. This study aimed to investigate the association of BCC and exposome-related factors in the Spanish population. METHODS: BCC cases (n = 119) and controls (n = 127) with no history of skin cancer were recruited between April 2020 and August 2022 by 13 dermatologists throughout Spain in this prospective multicenter case-control stu

In vivo optical imaging-guided targeted sampling for precise diagnosis and molecular pathology.

Conventional tissue sampling can lead to misdiagnoses and repeated biopsies. Additionally, tissue processed for histopathology suffers from poor nucleic acid quality and/or quantity for downstream molecular profiling. Targeted micro-sampling of tissue can ensure accurate diagnosis and molecular profiling in the presence of spatial heterogeneity, especially in tumors, and facilitate acquisition of fresh tissue for molecular analysis. In this study, we explored the feasibility of performing 1-2 mm precision biopsies guided by high-resolution reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) and optical cohe

Reconstruction of external auditory canal with a laterocervical twisted (snail) flap.

There are several different causes of the deformities of the external auditory canal requiring reconstruction such as tumors, burns, trauma, and malformations. Many surgical approaches with varying success for the reconstruction of the external auditory canal (EAC) have been favored, including secondary healing, skin grafting, and a variety of local skin flaps. Unfortunately, the major drawback of the previously defined techniques is the resulting stenosis of the EAC. A 73-year-old white man was admitted to our clinic because of an unhealing ulcerated lesion at the superior and posterior one t

An open pilot study of ambulatory photodynamic therapy using a wearable low-irradiance organic light-emitting diode light source in the treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancer.

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a popular treatment for nonmelanoma skin cancer with clearance rates of between 70% and 100%. Although reported to have a superior cosmetic outcome, the inconvenience of hospital visits and discomfort during therapy are considered drawbacks. OBJECTIVES: To present an open pilot study of a low-irradiance, potentially disposable, lightweight, organic light-emitting diode (OLED), which is an area-emitting light source (2 cm diameter), suitable for ambulatory PDT. METHODS: Twelve patients with Bowen's disease (eight) and superficial basal cell carcinoma

Perivascular spaces in eccrine spiradenoma. A clue to its histological diagnosis.

Perivascular spaces were found to represent a useful histological clue to the diagnosis of eccrine spiradenoma. They were observed in eight of nine eccrine spiradenomas but not in syringomas, nodular basal cell carcinomas, or glomangiomas. Perivascular spaces in spiradenomas consisted of variably sized spaces around one or more central blood vessels, bordered at the periphery by a palisade of tumor cells and lined at both sides by basement membrane collagen type IV. Perivascular spaces contained variable numbers of T lymphocytes in all cases and could undergo fibrosis, cystic dilatation, or hy

Seborrheic skin and acne vulgaris as protective factors against the development of basal cell epithelioma.

This study was conducted in order to evaluate a possible protective role of seborrheic complexion and a history of acne on the development of basal cell epithelioma (BCE). For this purpose, 77 patients with this tumor were examined and asked to fill out a questionnaire. The questionnaire included demographic data and questions about skin type, eye and hair colors, sun exposure habits and a past history of acne. The nature, number and location of tumors, the texture of skin and acne scars were noted by a physician. A group of 93 age-, sex- and skin-color-matched patients served as controls. The

Treatment efficacy with electrochemotherapy: A multi-institutional prospective observational study on 376 patients with superficial tumors.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous metastases represent a therapeutic challenge. An increasing body of experience suggests that electrochemotherapy (ECT) provides effective tumor control, although its evidence basis should be strengthened. METHODS: This prospective, multicenter, observational study enrolled patients with superficial metastases, who underwent ECT at 10 centers between 2008 and 2013. Outcomes included adherence to European Standard Operating Procedures of ECT (ESOPE), tumor response, local progression-free survival (LPFS), toxicity and patient-reported outcomes (PROs, EORTC QLQ-C30 plus an

Overexpression of phosphorylated-STAT3 correlated with the invasion and metastasis of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.

In order to evaluate the possible effects of STAT3 phosphorylation and expression of E-cadherin on metastasis of some human epidermal non-melanoma cutaneous tumors, the expression of phosphorylated STAT3 (p-STAT3) and E-cadherin were analyzed by immunohistochemistry staining in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections of human cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and seborrhoeic keratosis (SK). An immunohistochemistry staining technique was employed to measure the expression of p-STAT3 and E-cadherin protein in 30 cases of cutaneous SCC, 20 cases of BCC,

NTP Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of 3,3'-Dimethylbenzidine Dihydrochloride (CAS No. 612-82-8) in F344/N Rats (Drinking Water Studies).

3,3'-Dimethylbenzidine dihydrochloride is one of five chemicals being evaluated in 2-year carcinogenicity and toxicity studies as part of the NTP's Benzidine Dye Initiative. This Initiative was designed to evaluate representative benzidine congeners, benzidine congener-derived dyes, and benzidine-derived dyes. 3,3'-Dimethylbenzidine dihydrochloride was nominated for study because of the potential for human exposure during production of bisazobiphenyl dyes and because benzidine, a structurally related chemical, is a known human carcinogen. Toxicology and carcinogenesis studies were conducted by

Dermoscopy of Adnexal Tumors.

Cutaneous adnexal tumors include lesions with apocrine, eccrine, follicular, sebaceous, and mixed differentiation. Most are benign and sporadic, although malignant forms are occasionally observed and some cases develop in the setting of inherited syndromes. These tumors often cause immense diagnostic difficulty. Dermoscopy is a noninvasive technique that has greatly improved the diagnostic accuracy of different skin lesions, including these tumors. We provide a review of the literature on the dermoscopic structures and patterns associated with adnexal tumors. Most patterns associated with this

Follow-Up of Patients With Complete Remission of Locally Advanced Basal Cell Carcinoma After Vismodegib Discontinuation: A Multicenter French Study of 116 Patients.

PURPOSE: Vismodegib is a hedgehog pathway inhibitor indicated for the treatment of locally advanced basal cell carcinoma (laBCC), with an objective response rate of 65%, including a 32% complete response (CR). However, adverse effects often lead to drug discontinuation. The objective of our study was to evaluate long-term responses, predictive factors, and management of relapse after vismodegib discontinuation. METHODS: An observational retrospective study was conducted in nine French oncodermatology units. We included patients with laBCC with CR on vismodegib who discontinued treatment betwe
