Systematic development of an artificial neural network model for real-time prediction of ground-level ozone in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Ground-level ozone is a secondary pollutant that has recently gained notoriety for its detrimental effects on human and vegetation health. In this paper, a systematic approach is applied to develop artificial neural network (ANN) models for ground-level ozone (O3) prediction in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, using ambient monitoring data for input. The intent of these models is to provide regulatory agencies with a tool for addressing data gaps in ambient monitoring information and predicting O3 events. The models are used to determine the meteorological conditions and precursors that most affect

Neural network approach to classify infective keratitis.

PURPOSE: Infective keratitis is a major sight-threatening condition in developing countries like India. An early diagnosis of infective keratitis is critical to its treatment. Epidemiological trends, morphological features of corneal ulceration and presence of other risk factors often dictate choice of initial treatment. This work assesses the usefulness of classification of infective keratitis by artificial neural network (ANN). METHODS: Forty input variables from each of the sixty-three known bacterial or fungal ulcers provided the basis for training a three layer feed-forward neural networ

Compensatory fuzzy neural networks-based intelligent detection of abnormal neonatal cerebral Doppler ultrasound waveforms.

Compensatory fuzzy neural networks (CFNN) without normalization, which can be trained with a backpropagation learning algorithm, is proposed as a pattern recognition technique for intelligent detection of Doppler ultrasound waveforms of abnormal neonatal cerebral hemodynamics. Doppler ultrasound signals were recorded from the anterior cerebral arteries of 40 normal full-term babies and 14 mature babies with intracranial pathology. The features of normal and abnormal groups as inputs to pattern recognition algorithms were extracted from the maximum velocity waveforms by using principal componen

Predicting the effectiveness of hydroxyurea in individual sickle cell anemia patients.

The study described in this paper was undertaken to develop the ability to predict the response of sickle-cell patients to hydroxyurea (HU) therapy. We analyzed the effect of HU on the values of 23 parameters of 83 patients. A Student's t-test was used to confirm (Rodgers GP, Dover GJ, Noguchi CT, Schechter AN, Nienhuis AW. Hematologic responses of patients with sickle cell disease to treatment with hydroxyurea, N Engl J Med 1990;322;1037-44) at the 0. 001 level that treatment with HU increases the proportion of fetal hemoglobin (HbF), and the average corpuscular volume (MCV) of the red blood

Diagnosing breast cancer from FNAs: variable relevance in neural network and logistic regression models.

We compared the selection of variables for building a classification model for the diagnosis of breast cancer using neural networks and logistic regression. A set of 460 cases was used to build neural network and logistic regression models that classify cell samples obtained by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) as malignant or benign, depending on nine pathology features. Variables selected by a step down logistic regression model were compared to those selected by a measure of relevance derived from neural network weights. Since both types of models resulted in similar predictive accuracy, we expe

[Transitory global amnesia--psychogenic origin of organic disease? Psychopathologic basis and pathogenetic considerations].

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is an acute amnestic syndrome without neurological symptoms and remitting spontaneously. Though cerebral ischemia, epilepsy, and migraine have been implicated in some cases, non of these factors could be proven responsible for most, and etiology remains unclear. Of special interest is the induction of TGA by psychological and emotional stress in about 14-29% of all cases, which is illustrated by the clinical example of a 72-year-old women who suffered an attack of TGA after discovering a burglary in her home. Psychopathological and pathogenetic aspects are discus

Infrared microspectroscopy and artificial neural networks in the diagnosis of cervical cancer.

Infrared spectra of 88 normal and 32 abnormal (mild to severe dysplasia) cervical smear samples were used as a databank to investigate the usefulness of artificial neural networks (ANN) in the diagnosis of cervical smears. The spectra were first reduced, using principal component analysis (PCA), to seven wavenumber components that are the major contributors to the variance. A number of different ANN architectures were investigated that could differentiate between normal and abnormal cervical smears. Although the ANNs were trained to differentiate only normal from abnormal smears, the results u

Analytical methods to differentiate similar electroencephalographic spectra: neural network and discriminant analysis.

Differences in electroencephalographic (EEG) power spectra obtained under similar, but not identical, conditions may be difficult to discern using standard techniques. Statistical analysis may not be useful because of the large number of comparisons necessary. Visual recognition of differences also may be difficult. A new technique, neural network analysis, has been used successfully in other problems of pattern recognition and classification. We examined a number of methods of classifying similar EEG data: standard statistical analysis (analysis of variance), visual recognition, discriminant

Unsupervised, piecewise linear decoding enables an accurate prediction of muscle activity in a multi-task brain computer interface.

Objective.Creating an intracortical brain computer interface (iBCI) capable of seamless transitions between tasks and contexts would greatly enhance user experience. However, the nonlinearity in neural activity presents challenges to computing a global iBCI decoder. We aimed to develop a method that differs from a globally optimized decoder to address this issue.Approach.We devised an unsupervised approach that relies on the structure of a low-dimensional neural manifold to implement a piecewise linear decoder. We created a distinctive dataset in which monkeys performed a diverse set of tasks,

The Cost of Scrutiny: Subclinical Social Anxiety and Performance Context Reshape Frontal-Midline Theta Network Reconfigurations during Probabilistic Learning.

Social anxiety is reliably characterized by biases toward avoidance and aversive learning. Frontal-midline theta (FM-theta) oscillations have been implicated as a key neural mechanism underlying these learning biases. Here, we combined a dynamic network neuroscience approach with computational modeling to investigate how FM-theta oscillatory activity coordinates large-scale functional network interactions on a trial-to-trial basis during feedback-guided learning. Additionally, we examined how these neural dynamics are associated with social anxiety across different social contexts. A sample of

Neural network powered microscopic system for cataract surgery.

Phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is a widely used effective treatment for cataracts. However, the surgical outcome relies heavily on precise operations with marked eye location and orientation, which ideally require a high-precision navigation system for complete guidance of surgical procedure. However, both research and current commercial surgical microscopes still face substantial challenges in handling various complex clinical scenarios. Here we propose a neural network-powered surgical microscopic system that can benefit from big data to address the unmet clinic

A New Cloud-Model-Based Prognostic Model for Gastric Carcinoma.

IntroductionRBF neural networks are widely used in gastric carcinoma prognostic models, but they face challenges including difficulty in determining the Gaussian radial basis function parameters of the hidden layer and the diversity/ambiguity of factors affecting gastric carcinoma prognosis. The cloud model, a key tool in uncertainty theory, is adept at handling fuzziness and randomness of complex medical data by quantifying uncertainty. This study integrates the cloud model with RBF neural networks to address the aforementioned limitations.MethodsThe study included 11,474 gastric carcinoma pa

Control of asymmetric Hopfield networks and application to cancer attractors.

The asymmetric Hopfield model is used to simulate signaling dynamics in gene regulatory networks. The model allows for a direct mapping of a gene expression pattern into attractor states. We analyze different control strategies aimed at disrupting attractor patterns using selective local fields representing therapeutic interventions. The control strategies are based on the identification of signaling bottlenecks, which are single nodes or strongly connected clusters of nodes that have a large impact on the signaling. We provide a theorem with bounds on the minimum number of nodes that guarante

Working face status detection in coal mine based on YOLOv8-EST.

With the continuous development of deep learning, the application of deep neural network-based object detection in coal mines is expanding. Meanwhile, with the increasing requirements of recognition accuracy in production applications, most studies choose to expand the depth and parameters of the network to improve the recognition accuracy. However, due to the limited computational resources in the coal mining face, it is challenging to meet the computational demands of a large number of hardware resources. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel object detection algorithm, YOLOv8-EST, specific

CuAlO2-Based Memristor with Device-Aware Temporal Learning for Neuromorphic Applications.

Memristive devices have emerged as promising candidates for neuromorphic computing because of their ability to emulate analog synaptic functionalities via electrical tuning of conductance states. However, achieving stable and reliable switching remains challenging in copper oxide systems due to multiple intrinsic defect-mediated transport processes existing simultaneously. In this work, we demonstrate CuAlO2-based memristors exhibiting stable bipolar resistive switching, analog conductance modulation, and synaptic plasticity suitable for neuromorphic applications. The structurally ordered dela

Altered resting-state functional connectivity of the anterior cingulate cortex in rats post noise exposure.

AIMS: We aimed to find where and how noise-induced cochlear hearing loss affects the central nervous system during the early state and identify the neural substrate for aberrant patterns that mediating noise-related anxiety-/depression- like behaviors. METHODS: Broad band noise with 122 dB for 2 hours was conducted to induce hearing loss. We defined 0 day (N0D) and 10 days (N10D) post noise as the acute and sub-acute period. Behavioral tests (Open field test and light/dark test) and resting-state fMRI were computed to evaluate emotional conditions and aberrant neural activity. Functional conn

Scaphoid Fracture Detection by Using Convolutional Neural Network.

Scaphoid fractures frequently appear in injury radiograph, but approximately 20% are occult. While there are few studies in the fracture detection of X-ray scaphoid images, their effectiveness is insignificant in detecting the scaphoid fractures. Traditional image processing technology had been applied to segment interesting areas of X-ray images, but it always suffered from the requirements of manual intervention and a large amount of computational time. To date, the models of convolutional neural networks have been widely applied to medical image recognition; thus, this study proposed a two-

Enzymatic Reaction Feasibility Classification Using Machine Learning Methods.

With the advancement of computer-aided retrobiosynthesis, numerous biosynthetic pathways have been predicted, exceeding the capacity of experimental validation. Effective classifiers are needed to identify feasible reactions. In this study, we collected 75,864 feasible reactions from biocatalysis databases and generated an equal number of infeasible reactions based on reaction rules. Following atom mapping focused on reaction centers and systematic reaction preprocessing, three datasets for training were constructed: the "stereo" dataset, which retained reaction stereochemical information; the

Complexity begets simplicity: self-supervised learning for palaeontological images with few or no labels.

Palaeontology has seen widespread and growing use of machine learning (ML) to classify and analyse large datasets of fossils. However, palaeontology is a challenging field in which to apply ML. Datasets may be small or unlabelled, images may be complex and different from standard datasets and palaeontologists may lack specialist training and access to necessary computational resources. We show how these challenges can be addressed by using recent developments in self-supervised learning (SSL). Using a frozen DINOv3 feature extractor and a simple linear classifier, with reduced data, we can ach

Microscopy image segmentation using a fine-tuned machine learning model with limited training dataset.

Manual annotation of microscopic images of thin tissue sections remains time-consuming step limiting the throughput of diagnostic analysis. We present a novel automated approach using the total intensity image as an input to a U-Net architecture of Convolutional Neural Network with a pretrained ResNet-34 encoder for image segmentation. The network was trained on limited-size annotated dataset to distinguish four classes in the images of thin sections of murine uterine cervix: background, internal os, cervical tissue, and vaginal wall. With only 74 manually annotated images in total (51 used fo
